Can Dell dominate the 17-inch market the same way it captured the 15-inch market? The XPS 17 is surprisingly compact with specifications that read like something twice the size, but a few small details miss the mark.

The Dell XPS 17 is a huge laptop that doesn’t feel like one. This elegant beast of a notebook packs blistering 10th Gen Intel power and advanced Nvidia graphics into a sleek design that features one of the largest, most immersive 17-inch displays you can find on a laptop. With impressively loud speakers, a speedy SSD and more than 9 hours of battery life, this compact powerhouse is ideal for daily multitasking, serious content creation and even AAA gaming.

The Dell XPS 17 features stunning visuals, a fantastic 4K screen that can handle any creative work task and good battery life alongside a satisfying keyboard. In many ways, though, the XPS is also underwhelming. The components are good, but outpaced by more modern silicon, and the aesthetic is undermined by missing features and extra weight. It’s also expensive: the nearest Gigabyte equivalent is faster, has more features and is cheaper, and a Core i9-based MacBook Pro costs £2,332 exc VAT. If you’ve got money to burn on a brilliant screen and a sleek, stylish design, then the Dell XPS 17 is a worthwhile creative machine – it’ll handle those tasks comfortably, and look good doing it. But more features and power can be found elsewhere without much effort.

I was very impressed with the Dell XPS 15, but this XPS 17 is bigger and better. If you can pony up the extra cash for the XPS 17, then I highly suggest it. The display’s extra space is totally worth it, and the better specifications will help those using heavy apps. The 2020 Dell XPS 17 9700 is the king of the hill in the world of 17″ Windows laptops.

Lisa Gade reviews the Dell XPS 17 (9700), the new 17” model in the XPS lineup of premium laptops. Though the footprint isn’t much bigger than the already compact and slim XPS 15, Dell managed to pack a 17” IPS class 16:10 aspect ratio display. It’s available with a full HD+ or wide gamut 4K+ display, both rated at 500 nits with HDR 400 support. The notebook runs Windows 10 on Intel 10th gen, 45 watt CPUs up to an 8-core i9. It’s available with NVIDIA RTX 2060 Max-Q or GTX 1650 Ti dedicated graphics. It has an MS Precision trackpad, white backlit keyboard, 4 Thunderbolt 3 ports, Wi-Fi 6, upgradable RAM and M.2 SSDs and two forms of biometrics. It’s geared toward content creation and consumption, though it can handle some gaming too.

The new Dell XPS 17 makes a big first impression, and that's not only because it's the first 17-inch XPS laptop in almost a decade. Compared to the last XPS 17 we reviewed long ago, or even most modern 17-inch laptops, it's (relatively) small, with a slim, top-of-the-line design and a tiny-bezeled 4K-plus calibrated display.

In short, this isn’t the best laptop for anyone who’s mostly working in Chrome around the house or in libraries or coffee shops. It’s really for power users who might need to occasionally work on the go and who have found that smaller screens and lower-powered systems fall short of their needs. For that person, this is the best laptop to buy.

Dell is one of the few manufacturers that offer large multimedia laptops without dedicated graphics cards. If you are not interested in gaming, you can still get a high-end multimedia laptop for a lower price. However, even the base model XPS 17 9700 with the small Core i5 is anything but cheap.

You know, when you first see a 17-inch laptop with bezels so thin, you just can’t help but marvel at the engineering miracle you’re seeing. Combine this with the fact that that said display can run at 600 nits of maximum brightness and you can barely notice there are any bezels around it. However, as with the 15-inch model, there is something fundamentally wrong with Dell’s offering. And you have guessed it right – the base version of the device. You just can’t offer a Core i5-10300H model with 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage (no matter how fast it is) and put it at $1450. And if you want to get the next option, which includes the more powerful Core i7-10750H and the GTX 1650 Ti, you need to spend $600 more (yet you get double the memory and the storage). And things really get out of control if you want the 4K display, which will set you back a total of $2900.

The first generation XPS 17 9700 was one of the best-looking 17-inch laptops with Core-H and GeForce RTX graphics, but it had some under-the-hood peculiarities that needed to be ironed out. The new XPS 17 9710 addresses the underlying issues while boosting performance by quite the margin.

The Dell XPS 17 shows how far portable computing has come. Like the ASUS ProArt Studiobook Pro 16 OLED, it delivers a huge amount of computing power in a form that you can conceivably carry around and use on the go. It also illustrates that Intel’s 11th Generation Core i7 processors are competitive with AMD’s Ryzen 9 on a mobile platform, particularly with everyday media applications. The XPS has a great screen, a powerful GPU, and it’s still reasonably thin. Although the ASUS ProArt Studiobook Pro 16 OLED pips it in a few areas, with an even more vibrant screen, the Dell XPS 17 is a great all-rounder for professional creative work on the move.

It’s hard to compare the XPS 17 to similar computers simply because there just aren’t that many. Most other 17-inch laptops are colossal gaming rigs, with terrible battery life and even more heft. LG’s Gram 17 is unique in that it has a large screen, but it doesn’t pack the performance chops of the XPS 17. Apple’s latest 16-inch MacBook Pro is probably the closest option, with a slightly smaller screen, better performance (outside of gaming), and a lighter chassis at a slightly higher price. But if you don’t like MacOS or just want an even bigger screen, the XPS 17 stands alone. It might just be the ideal work-from-home laptop for those without dedicated desks to work on.

The Dell XPS 17 is an incredibly powerful laptop that is easy to carry around due to its thin and lightweight design. However, the high price and lack of legacy ports may stop some folks from going all-in on this luxurious laptop. The Dell XPS 17 is for the creative professional on the go that wants an extremely powerful and versatile PC, but one that's stylish and won't look out of place in an office. However, its thinness does end up being kind of its bane in that regard, as the port selection isn't quite what you may want to see.

Dell’s 17” XPS slim and light laptop / premium mobile workstation is back for a second generation in 2021 with a striking wide gamut 4+ display option, NVIDIA RTX 3050 and RTX 3060 graphics, and the usual CNC aluminum chassis with carbon fiber interior. The XPS 17 (9710) targets content creators (and content consumers!) with that big 16:10 aspect ratio display, Intel 11th gen 45 watt Core i5, i7 and i9 processors, expandable RAM and storage and quite good quad stereo speakers. The notebook PC has Thunderbolt 4, a full size SD card slot and both a fingerprint scanner and Windows Hello camera. It directly competes with the 16” M1 MacBook Pro and Razer blade 17.

Dell’s XPS 17 is easy to like. The display is excellent, it feels solid, and it looks gorgeous. However, its performance doesn’t stand out from the crowd. The same applies to battery life. Many owners won’t notice the XPS 17’s limits, but they’re noticeable when you push the laptop hard. Dell’s pricing makes that a problem. An entry-level Dell XPS 17 with an Intel Core i5 processor and integrated graphics starts at $1,599.99, but the laptop we tested here retails for $2,799.99. That’s a lot for a machine with so-so performance and ho-hum battery life. Apple’s MacBook Pro 14 has an edge. It delivers way better battery life and improved performance in many situations, though the Dell XPS 17 will lead in gaming. If gaming is your top priority, however, you’ll see more value from a dedicated gaming laptop like the Razer Blade Advanced. The XPS 17’s saving grace is, well, its grace. It is (along with the XPS 13 and XPS 15) the most luxurious Windows laptop you can buy. Even Apple could learn from the XPS 17’s soft-touch interior and razor-thin bezels.

The 2021 Dell XPS 17 9710 isn’t much different from the 9700. I’d imagine if you wanted to save a bit of cash, you could pick a 9700 up at a discount and get much the same experience. But for those who want more power and newer hardware, the XPS 17 9710 is still one of the best laptops on the market. As a user of both Apple MacBooks and Windows laptops, the XPS can be considered a MacBook killer in many ways.

Though it's an expensive venture that adds up to $2,600 on Dell.com, this XPS 17 model that we're reviewing is one of the best laptops money can buy. Thanks to the immersive 17-inch screen, Intel's H-series processor, as well as the Nvidia GPU, there isn't anything this laptop can't handle. To sum up the XPS 17 in one word: Big. It’s a big laptop with a big screen, big storage and big performance. Do you need that much in a portable package? Most users won’t, and I would suggest that most people may be better off looking at the XPS 15, which has similar performance in a much more portable package. But if you need to be able to crunch humongous spreadsheets, attack demons with chainsaws and handle pretty much any other computing task you can think of, the XPS 17 can handle it. As long as you have the shoulders big enough to carry it, that is.

We can understand why some people don’t quite get why the XPS 17 even exist. It’s arguably a “niche” laptop that’s easily outperformed by 17.3-inch gaming laptops and on the face of it, it’s “only” one-inch larger than 16-inch laptops. To sum up, if you want to pack the largest screen you can into the sleekest laptop possible, and spend a big chunk of time running Adobe apps, it would be pretty hard to beat the XPS 17 9710 . Sure, that’s definitely a niche, but it’s not a bad niche to be in.

The refreshed Dell XPS 17 is a sleek, powerful notebook with enough graphics capability for all but the most intense 3D games, together with a gorgeous 17-inch 4K display. If you're a fan of the biggest screen you can get, it's a refreshing alternative to bulky 17-inch gaming rigs and also a better buy than Apple's 16-inch MacBook Pro, which still uses older-generation Intel processors. If you just want a large-screen desktop replacement and can live without GeForce RTX graphics, the LG Gram 17 is considerably lighter and less expensive, and Dell's smaller XPS 15 is another excellent choice if you crave power and style but can make do with slightly less screen real estate. Otherwise, the XPS 17 is the ultimate jumbo laptop.

Sometimes a simple spec change is all that’s needed to keep you at the top of the heap. Such is the case with the Dell XPS 17. Thanks to its 11th Gen Intel processor and 30-series Nvidia GPU, the premium system has more than enough power to keep even its fiercest competitors struggling to keep up. And it doesn’t hurt that the laptop has a large, bright display, a great pair of speakers, and a comfy keyboard. However, for $2,949, I wish the display was more vivid and the battery life leaves something to desire. If you’re on the hunt for longevity with comparable power, the 16-inch MacBook Pro is the way to go (although you might want to hold off until Apple’s next event). If you’re searching for an ultra-lightweight system with endurance, the LG Gram 17 is your laptop. But if you’re looking for the Cadillac of premium laptops, you’ll be hard-pressed to outdo the Dell XPS 17.

Overall, the 2021 Dell XPS 17 is the notebook for folks who want the most portability possible while still retaining a large, bright, and sharp display. Its footprint is much closer to that of some 15" notebooks, but with a big, beautiful 17-inch 16:10 panel to work with. The XPS 17's productivity performance is excellent while its gaming capabilities are very solid as well. The XPS 17's battery life up-time was also very good, especially considering that 17-inch 4K panel. The Dell XPS 17 model we tested delivers the total package, and it should for the high-end price tag our machine commands. Regardless, laptop consumers in the market for a machine with a premium, high-end display and a top-notch PC platform to drive it would do well to start with the new Dell XPS 17.

Push the feeling that the XPS design team is rather resting on its laurels to one side and the XPS 17 is a truly impressive omni-competent machine that should suit anyone in the creative industries or simply anyone who just wants a good large screen notebook for general use. That screen, of course, is the key feature: large, bright, colourful and pin-sharp it’s hard to beat and it's accompanied by a top-notch sound system to make a truly excellent multi-media machine. The GPU’s low TGP setting is a small drawback but outside of hardcore gaming, it’s not a problem that makes itself felt and a higher power rating would have had an impact on battery life. In short, the new XPS 17 is just as good as the previous version, just more powerful thanks to the new Alder Lake processor.

What exactly do you want from your laptop? Do you prefer it to be thin, light, and versatile, or do you need all of the power in the world? The answers to these questions will greatly affect your purchase decision. If you want the latter, you would probably steer clear of the XPS 17. Its form factor just doesn’t allow it to take advantage of the horsepower its processor can output, while also limiting the TGP options for the graphics card. Both of that could be seen in the benchmarks, where the laptop was only performing well in the rather short Adobe Photoshop test. Ultimately though, this laptop is made for creators – since photographers are part of this group of people, we think that the aforementioned test is pretty promising. Then comes the display. Dell XPS 17 9720’s IPS panel has a 17-inch diagonal, Full HD resolution, comfortable viewing angles, and a good contrast ratio. It also features a very high maximum brightness, while it covers 100% of the sRGB color gamut. Furthermore, our Gaming and Web design profile really improves the color accuracy and helps it fall right into the standards of sRGB.

The 2022 edition of the Dell XPS 17 is as ever a virtually unique big screen laptop. It’s slim and relatively light, has a premium, rigid unibody aluminum design and performance verging on gaming laptop territory. This refresh has Intel 12th gen Alder Lake H series CPUs, NVIDIA RTX 3050 and RTX 3060 dedicated graphics options and upgradable RAM and storage. There are2 display options, both being 6:10 aspect ratio and 500 nit: full HD and 4K wide gamut touch. This is a creator laptop for Photoshop, Adobe Premiere, Blender and more, though of course it can handle some gaming too. It’s closest competitors are the 17” Razer Blade and 16” MacBook Pro.

If I were in the market for a luxurious laptop with a larger screen, the Dell XPS 17 (2022) would be near the top of my shortlist. Sure, it’s expensive, but the 17-inch 4K screen is fantastic and the high spec means there’s power to spare. As a gamer, middling 3D performance and some teething issues with stability put me off a little. But if that’s not a deal-breaker for you, then the Dell XPS 17 is a strong proposition.

Finally, since the two laptops share the same Core i7-12700H, their CPU-bound performance is pretty much the same. However, the RTX 3060 in the XPS 17 translates to a significant increase graphics performance over the XPS 15. If you’re looking for a laptop that can pull double duty as a work machine and an occasional gaming system, the XPS 17 will better perform that role than the XPS 15, so long as you don’t mind lugging around a heavier laptop. Potential buyers should also take note that the XPS 17 costs significantly more than the XPS 15. The XPS 17 starts at $1849, but our review unit is priced at $3049. Those considering picking the XPS 17 over the XPS 15 for the RTX 3060, might want to think twice about whether the bump in graphics performance is worth the additional cost. Nonetheless, so long as you have the cash, we don’t think you can go wrong with either system and both are fairly priced in comparison to similar premium (operative word) options in the market currently.

There’s one word that best describes the Dell XPS 17: balanced. Dell’s well-rounded workhorse doesn’t set records in any particular area but delivers solid results across the board. It offers forward-looking connectivity, a massive screen, strong CPU and GPU performance, and good battery life. And it does all this at a reasonable price. This makes the Dell XPS 17 a good fit if you want a single do-it-all machine and don’t mind lugging around a large backpack when you travel. The XPS 17 can handle any task you’ll throw at it, at home or on the go.

The updated XPS 17 is much like the previous edition, marrying everything we loved before with a faster processor. This is a relatively simple update to judge: If you own the XPS 17 (9710), the bump in performance isn’t worth upgrading, given the relative lack of change on other fronts. But if you have an older or smaller laptop and want the latest big-screen experience, the XPS 17 is just that. Our configuration is pricey but premium, and from the lower end of its configuration range to the loadout of our test model, this is still the 17-inch power-user laptop to beat.

The Dell XPS 17 (9720) maintains everything great about the previous model, including packing a massive display into about as small a chassis as is physically possible. It’s not quite the thinnest 17-inch laptop you can buy, nor is it the fastest. But it balances size and speed in a way that no other laptop does. It’s also incredibly well-built, looks great, and even offers decent battery life. Toss in one of the best IPS displays we’ve tested, and you have a highly portable machine for creators, hardcore productivity workers, and multimedia consumers. It’s not cheap, but it’s well worth the price.

It has great build quality, really good display and speakers, and powerful performance, but it is still a confusing machine. The Dell XPS 17 starts at Rs 3,11,000, with the top-spec model coming in at Rs 3,64,289. That said, there are plenty of other powerful options from ASUS, HP, and MSI that undercut this price by a massive margin. For instance, you can get the MSI Creator Z17 HX at Rs 2,50,000, or the HP OMEN Transcend 16 at Rs 2,00,000. Moreover, if you give up on the screen real-estate, there are options like the ASUS ROG Flow Z13 in the mix. But one thing that works in Dell’s favour is the all-rounder nature of the laptop. The three laptops I mentioned above do undercut the XPS, but they also lack one or the other capabilities of the XPS. So, in my opinion, Dell isn’t trying to price it right, but to check all the boxes. You can do anything from office work to gaming and video editing on the Dell XPS 17, and the maxed out specifications make sure it remains future-proof for a long time.

At its cost of $3,399, the Dell XPS 17 9730 is too pricey not to at least offer an OLED display. And it's about two years late (and counting) to the 1080p webcam party. Those complaints aside, the XPS 17 9730 boasts a sturdy yet thin design and proved to be a strong graphics performer. Dell often discounts the XPS 17 9730 along with the rest of its laptops, and I've seen the price of our test system configuration drop as low as $2,649. At this price, the lack of an OLED option is more forgivable. The low-res webcam, however, is not.

The latest Dell XPS 17 has a relatively large footprint thanks to its 17" 16:10 display, but that comes as a surprise to nobody. It's also pretty thin and deceptively light for its form factor, which makes it more portable than you might expect. As we said before, it fits in a backpack just fine, so users on the go shouldn't be worried. The XPS 17's premium build and understated design won't distract coworkers in meetings or patrons of the local Starbucks, either. It's handsome and very fast, which is everything that anyone could ask for in a laptop. And honestly, we're a bit smitten with the machine. Performance in the XPS 17 is top notch. The Intel Core i7 (Core i9 optional) processor can rip through all of the benchmarks in our test suite with style and aplomb.

The XPS 17 (9730) may be a bulky and heavy laptop, but its exceptional performance, expansive and bright screen, and generous storage capacity cannot be denied. Whether or not its size is worth the extra weight ultimately depends on your needs. Do you need to be running power-hungry tasks like 4K video editing on the road? It’s way too much computer if you are just doing a bit of web browsing, word processing, or other lightweight tasks – as the smaller Dell XPS 13 has more than enough power and is much lighter. If you require a computer that can crunch numbers and show the result on an attractive 4K screen, then the Dell XPS 17 (9370) is a great pick for 2023, as long as your shoulders (and credit card) are up to the strain.

The Dell XPS 17 is a laptop that can take on multiple personalities. It's a style PC, it's a workstation, am entertainment unit when there's no TV nearby, and a more-than-respectable gaming laptop. Sure, it costs a fortune, and doesn't represent the cutting edge of tech that the XPS series is meant to be all about. This design, while handsome, may seem a bit long in the tooth to some. And the use of a relatively low-spec webcam is disappointing when almost all the other big-name releases this year use higher-res sensors. You probably shouldn’t buy this laptop for every day portable use either. While I have done so during testing, upwards of 2kg is really a bit heavy for this job. Have I loved using it, though? Absolutely.

There’s lots to like about the Dell XPS 9730, from its 16:10 display and thin yet sturdy chassis to comfortable keyboard, roomy touchpad and outstanding battery life. However, the lack of an OLED display option, is a negative that will outweigh those positives for many content creators. With absolute black levels and stunning contrast ratio, an OLED display is far to IPS in most situations, and high on the priority list for any creative professional in the market for a laptop. Despite plenty of strengths, the omission of an OLED option is the main reason not to recommend the XPS 17 9730 to more people.

The 2023 Dell XPS 17 and Dell XPS 15 are still the best premium Windows laptops you can buy. Their design and build quality are at the top. As I’ve mentioned, we hope that Dell is considering a refresh for 2024 because while this design is still great, the competition is stepping up its game and Dell should be prepared for that. *We use revenue-generating affiliate links and may earn commissions for purchases made using them.

There’s lots to like about Dell XPS 9730, from its expansive, 17-inch 16:10 display and thin, rigid chassis to its comfortable keyboard, roomy touchpad and outstanding battery life. The lack of an OLED display option, however, is a negative that will outweigh those positives for many content creators. With absolute black levels and stunning contrast ratio, an OLED display is far superior to any IPS panel and will be high on the priority list of any creative professional shopping for a laptop, if not at the very top. The lack of an OLED option prevents a stronger recommendation for the XPS 17 9730.

The Dell XPS 17 is a potent productivity laptop. Its vibrant 17-inch display, powerful Intel Core i7 processor, and fast RTX 4070 graphics provide strong overall performance. It also provides an attractive and professional aesthetic, a pleasant keyboard, a large touchpad, and plenty of speedy, versatile connectivity. But it lacks USB-A ports, which could be an issue if you connect multiple USB-A devices to your current laptop; Dell included one USB port adapter with the XPS 17, but you’ll probably want to buy a USB-C hub. Graphic performance, although satisfactory, can’t match competitors like the Razer Blade 16, and Dell’s steep pricing will turn off shoppers craving a bargain. However, those are minor concessions for an otherwise standout laptop for prosumers and creative professionals seeking a large, powerful laptop that isn’t a chore to carry around.

The refreshed Dell XPS 17 delivers what is expected of a performance-focused update. Maintaining the same build as last year won’t turn any heads, but we see little wrong with the design save for some minor quibbles. The so-so keyboard and moderate array of ports are acceptable concessions, while the just-720p webcam is the biggest miss. Processor-based speed gains are noticeable and welcome, while the new GPU brings superior performance—professional users and creatives will appreciate the added power. If you bought the previous XPS 17 (and arguably even the model before that), this model does not demand an upgrade. The iterative improvement is useful, but not groundbreaking, while those seeking markedly more power should look beyond this system. But if you’re upgrading from an older laptop and are in the market for a big-screen system, it’s easy to recommend this model.

The XPS 17 9730 is an underwhelming update. Don’t misunderstand me – it’s still a very good laptop, providing solid performance in a thin and light package. But it’s falling behind, with slower creativity performance than many other 17-inch laptops, and it’s saddled with older technologies like a 720p webcam and wireless connectivity that’s a generation behind. It’s also expensive, rivaling the much stronger MacBook Pro 16 depending on the configuration. If you’re looking for a 17-inch laptop, then the XPS 17 remains a viable choice. But it’s no longer the class leader that it once was.

The XPS 17 is available with FHD+ and 4K+ 500 nit displays, and it has the usual aluminum unibody build and slim design. It’s available with Intel 13th gen Core i7 and i9 H series 45 watt processors and NVIDIA RTX graphics from the RTX 4050 to the RTX 4080 (with everything in between also available).

It's been a little while since we had a chance to review an XPS 17, and I'm pleased to report that our XPS 17 (2023) review unit has cemented my opinion of it as one of the best laptops on the market. If you want a big-screen laptop that can do it all, the XPS 17 is a great choice. While it doesn't excel in gaming or video editing, it can do both in a pinch, and the lush 17-inch UHD+ display on our review unit makes doing either a pleasure. The speakers are great, the port selection is decent, and while the 9-hour (tested) battery life won't astound you, it will at least ensure you can probably get through a workday without having to recharge. However, there are some important weaknesses to know about with this laptop.
