Beautiful design, low performance. Thanks to its 360-degree hinges, the HP Pavilion x360 can function as a laptop or a tablet -- in other words, a convertible PC. That sounds very practical, but in our tests we encountered several weaknesses.

The HP Pavilion x360 and Lenovo Yoga 2. Both are 11-inch convertible Windows PCs with a 360-degree hinge design, meaning that you can fold the keyboard back under the display to use it as a tablet. The Pavilion x360 starts at $400, and the Yoga 2 starts at $489. If you’re in the market for a new laptop, and like the idea of hybrid design, the Lenovo Yoga 2 is a good choice. It’s a little more expensive than the HP Pavilion x360, but you’ll get more for the money.

The benchmarks indicate that solid-state storage contributes more to performance than the availability of an additional 2GB of memory (the Atom Z3770 in the Venue 11 Pro can address only 2GB of memory, where the x360’s Pentium N3520 can deal with up to 8GB). My general feeling from using various Atom tablets and then trying both the Yoga 2 11 and the Pavillion x360 are similar: The limited memory in the Atom products impacted my ability to play some games, such as The Sims 3, but the performance slowdowns stemming from mechanical hard drives in the aforementioned hybrids were much more pervasive.

It's really too bad the HP Pavilion x360 suffers from poor battery life because it brings a lot to the budget hybrid table—good looks, solid build quality, a comfortable keyboard and touch pad, and impressive audio output. We prefer the Pavilion x360's keyboard, but we'd happily clack away for an extra two hours on the Yoga 2 11, and it's the latter machine that keeps our Editor's Choice honors.

For less than $400, the HP Pavilion x360 ($484 as reviewed) provides a solid Windows 8.1 experience, complete with a flexible multimode design, loud speakers and a responsive keyboard. However, the notebook's dim 11.6-inch, 1366 x 768 display is underwhelming, as is its short battery life.

The HP Pavilion 11t-n000 x360 is a tempting alternative to the Lenovo Yoga line of convertible hybrid laptops. However, the Editors' Choice Asus T100TA has significantly longer battery life and is much lighter in Tablet mode, as it detaches from the keyboard, making it a better choice for the road warrior. The Pavilion x360 is a convertible hybrid laptop system for the user who needs a slate tablet experience from time to time, but can't bear to leave their keyboard at home.

Basically this is a laptop device that is decked out in eye-catching red livery and is definitely not a product that will easily be overlooked. Is it a laptop? Or is it a tablet? In fact the Pavilion 11 x360 PC is a hybrid as it combines the look, feel and functionality of a laptop with that of a tablet through its screen capability to swivel through 360 degrees, hence the x360 part of the product’s title.

When it comes to browsing just a couple of websites at a time, writing email, producing documents and playing casual games, the x360 provides a smooth user experience. The laptop has 4GB of RAM and a generous 500GB hard disk, which gives you loads of space for all the media you'll want to take around with you. At £349, the x360 is much cheaper than most lightweight laptops and looks great. However, although it looks dull by comparison, the Budget Buy-winning Acer Travelmate B113-M is £50 cheaper and much more powerful; if you're not fussed about a touchscreen, the B113 is a better choice for a low-cost laptop.

On the one hand, HP has nailed some of the aspects of design, bringing out one of the better portable keyboards for a machine under $600, with a design that looks cool, unique, and won’t pick on fingerprints as easily. But then there’s that performance, with plenty of lag and slowdowns to go around, so much so that unless all you do is write text and check email or surf the web, you’ll find yourself annoyed and a touch concerned.

The HP Pavilion 11 x360 is not the right machine for those who are interested in squeezing the best possible performance out of every rupee invested, and are only looking for a vanilla workhorse laptop. Buyers who are looking for something with a little personality and flexibility will really like this device and will not have any trouble with it as long as their expectations are properly calibrated.

We actually took a look at the Pavilion x360 last year and came away unimpressed. At the time it was powered by a Celeron processor and equipped with a terrible TN panel. What a difference a year makes. The HP Pavilion x360 11T Touch Select is by no means a perfect laptop—it could use a better trackpad, better keyboard, and ditch the rotating hinges gimmick altogether in favor of a better processor or slightly larger SSD.

HP has delivered a cheap 2-in-1 that's fast enough to be your primary PC. For $499, the Pavilion x360 11 offers a powerful Intel Core M processor, impressive audio and solid battery life in highly versatile convertible frame. However, the hot-running underside and not-so-hot colors on the display prevent this hybrid from being an Editors' Choice.

The Pavilion x360 11 is HP’s smallest convertible notebook. It quickly converts into a tablet by virtue of its 360 degree display hinge – simply fold the display back until it’s flush against the underside of the notebook. The x360 11 has sturdy build quality, a comfortable full-size keyboard, good speakers, and plenty of ports. Its limited viewing angle display has average image quality at best, however; its performance leaves much to be desired; and it’s relatively thick and heavy for a notebook this size, let alone a tablet. Its biggest worry, however, is its mediocre battery life. It overall didn’t impress enough to warrant a full recommendation at its asking price, but it could be a good second computer provided you can find it for less.
