However for $1,299, consumers can get the Dell XPS 13 that offers better performance, a brighter display and longer battery life in a slimmer, lighter chassis.

The ambitious HP Spectre 13 x2 is one of those products that may be better on paper than in person. But that's only because the idea of a 13-inch high-res hybrid that builds off of HP's excellent Spectre line is such an appealing one.The Spectre 13 x2 works well as a big-screen tablet, and its laptop mode is only held back by some awkward weight and balance issues, not to mention a touch pad that doesn't always register taps and swipes.

PC makers have taken a number of different approaches for getting the keyboard out of the way when changing a convertible laptop into a tablet. This 13.3-inch detachable is an excellent choice if you spend much time in tablet mode, but some design decisions such as the omission of an SD card slot and lack of storage and memory upgrades are frustrating.
