Quite the spectre! HP calls its premium ultrabooks "Spectre" - and equips its most recent flagship device with a high-resolution QHD IPS display. But is the difference between QHD and Full HD truly that noticeable? And what about its build quality, its design, its performance and its connectivity? In short: Is the premium ultrabook worth its premium price?

It's easy to fall for the HP Spectre 13: it has that combo of quality materials, a sharp full HD (or higher) display and good looks that we expect from an Ultrabook. Better yet, it's priced to sell when compared to the metal-clad full HD or higher competition. Though HP put some hope and thought into the Control Zone trackpad as a differentiator, I don't think it's a huge selling point, but the quality, overall competence and solid performance for the price are do make it easy to recommend.

Our overall experience with the Spectre 13 Pro was a positive one, and we think it’s a great Ultrabook overall, whether used in the business space, or as a personal unit. It’s well built and it looks good. We love the screen quality, the keyboard is mostly comfortable to tap on, it provides a good range of features, and its speed was good for us. We just wish the screen wasn’t so glossy and that the battery life was perhaps a little better.

Build a better hybrid and the world will be a path to your door...or something like that. Thanks to its Intel Core i5 CPU and integrated graphics, the X2 is a solid workhorse delivering just enough power for work and play. It also delivers a respectable battery life. However for $1,299, consumers can get the Dell XPS 13 that offers better performance, a brighter display and longer battery life in a slimmer, lighter chassis.

The ambitious HP Spectre 13 x2 is one of those products that may be better on paper than in person. But that's only because the idea of a 13-inch high-res hybrid that builds off of HP's excellent Spectre line is such an appealing one.The Spectre 13 x2 works well as a big-screen tablet, and its laptop mode is only held back by some awkward weight and balance issues, not to mention a touch pad that doesn't always register taps and swipes.

PC makers have taken a number of different approaches for getting the keyboard out of the way when changing a convertible laptop into a tablet. This 13.3-inch detachable is an excellent choice if you spend much time in tablet mode, but some design decisions such as the omission of an SD card slot and lack of storage and memory upgrades are frustrating.

Every significant company that produces Windows Ultrabooks has tried its hand a Windows hybrid, and none have succeeded. Every device so far has involved compromise with one or both of those form factors. That’s no different here. The Spectre x2 is thicker and heavier than Ultrabooks, and the top-heavy design has an impact: prodding or adjusting the screen can tip the unit backwards, and it’s awkward to carry around. In tablet mode the x2’s weight, thickness and 13.3in screen means it’s difficult to use the HP in one hand.

The benefits of the HP Spectre 13t-h200 x2 over similarly priced ultrabooks start and end with the two-piece detachable tablet design. As a laptop, the performance is lackluster, and the battery life is somehwat subpar; as a Windows tablet, however, the Spectre 13T-h200 x2 is a solid choice. If you need a well-made, decent-performing Windows tablet, then it's worth considering, but it doesn't hold up well when weighed against other leading ultrabooks, like the Editors' Choice Samsung ATIV Book 9 Plus.

The HP Spectre 13t x2 is very similar to the standard HP Spectre 13t ultrabook. Though the latter offers slightly better performance, the difference isn’t noticeable in day-to-day use, and battery life is almost identical. The x2 is about a pound heavier, is a tenth of an inch thicker, and will set you back only $100 more.

But a portable design won't do you much good on the road if you're always running out of juice. The Spectre's weak battery life is its Achilles' heel, especially since its closest rival — Dell's nontouch XPS 13 — ran for nearly twice as long on the same battery test. Dell's system also provides a better selection of ports and comparable performance, though it's not as slim or sleek as HP's laptop.

What's great about the HP Spectre? Just look at it! Absolutely sublime. It's a thoroughbred laptop. For the most part the spec sheet is exemplary. When you combine the looks with the excellent performance it's an intoxicating mix that many rivals can't match. We're really disappointed the Spectre only comes with a Full HD screen when rivals are forging ahead. As we said above, the Spectre's display won't be good enough if you're used to a higher resolution display, such as on a retina MacBook Pro.

If you are looking for a good alternative to the MacBook with more ports for your peripherals and a little bit more horsepower under the hood while still being exceptionally lightweight and thin, the HP Spectre 13 is an ideal choice. However, if you the design is your top priority, be prepared to make some sacrifices along the way. The most notable flaw would be the short browsing runtimes due to the small battery capacity. It seems that engineers at HP couldn’t cram up bigger unit. A great alternative – not so thin, though – would be the XPS 13, which is by far one of the best premium 13-inchers out there. It has its own drawbacks but succeeds where the Spectre 13 fails.

For a “premium device,” HP’s Spectre 13 is designed well and priced fairly. Though it might get toasty on its undersides (if under strain), it’s a great first effort at making an ultrabook of this quality. In terms of marketing, it may be suitable for more than a few “millennials” who value design and thinness over extra ports or quad HD screens.

The HP Spectre offered surprisingly robust performance for such a thin and light machine. Typically, when a machine this thin comes in for testing here, we're prepared for some level of throttling of the main system processor. However, that absolutely was not the case. In fact, the HP Spectre routinely held a top tier position in all of our benchmark testing, whether in standard compute tasks or graphics and gaming, versus other laptops of its size and class.

With world-class good looks, boundary-pushing thinness, a brilliant display and top-notch performance, the HP Spectre has a lot going for it. Unfortunately, those highlights are countered by weak battery life, hot exhausts and a shortage of creature comforts like SD card readers or a touch-enabled display, which make comparisons between the Spectre and high maintenance hypercars hard to deny.

With an incredibly thin body and premium feel, the Spectre 13 is easy to recommend. It'll turn heads, but it's not a case of style over substance, as it beats or matches other top ultraportables we've tested. Because it costs $250 less than the Dell XPS 13 Touch and is a bit faster, it's an appealing option. That said, the XPS 13 boasts a higher-resolution touch display with minimal bezels along with the convenience of full-size USB ports, so it remains our Editors' Choice for high-end ultraportables.

Put simply, the HP Spectre 13 confounds expectations. When you see a notebook only 0.41 inch thin, you just know it'll have a Core M processor instead of a Core i7. You're sure it'll have a compromised, travel-free keyboard. You suspect it doesn't have room for an all-day battery. The Spectre makes those predictions wrong, wrong, wrong.

In the end, I have to give HP credit for accomplishing its goal of making the thinnest laptop possible without compromises. You’re truly getting Core i7 performance in a body most manufacturers would outfit with a low-power Core m. And let’s not forget that the Spectre 13.3 gives you not one, but two Thunderbolt 3 ports and a USB-C port.

It's a rare treat when we see what can only be described as a designer laptop that's 1) not priced way above the competition, 2) actually highly functional. The HP Spectre 13.3" Ultrabook has undeniable good looks, though it may be a bit uncomfortably fashion-oriented for some.

While the Spectre 13's design certainly won’t be to everyone's taste, the laptop is technically very impressive. If it lives up to its claims, it could be a genuinely compelling machine. Its thin and light build are by far the most appealing features, and if performance holds up this could be a serious contender for the best ultraportable this year.

With top notch specs and impressive design, these are the sort of indulgencies you should invest in without giving it a second thought. It isn’t traditional and uses USB Type C port for charging and transfering content. The battery life falls short and if you can compromise on both of the things, then, “Go buy it, period!”

Beauty and brawns are hard to get, and HP couldn’t get it completely right either. The company came close, though, and the Spectre 13.3 is meant for those who want the world’s slimmest laptop above all else. For practical users, the Dell XPS 13 and Macbook Air make better, and cheaper buys.

It works, particularly as the build quality, screen colour and contrast, keyboard and trackpad are all sound. The use of a punchy Intel Core i7 CPU is great in power terms, but it does mean the Spectre 13 is both noisier and less long-lasting than you might hope for.

The Spectre 13 is a fantastic ultraportable in its own right. Put the middling battery life to one side and it really doesn’t put a foot wrong. If eye-catching design is as important to you as a great display, brilliant keyboard and solid performance, then this is a featherweight tour de force.

The Spectre 13 is designed with a specific audience in mind and we have a feeling that this kind of buyer wouldn't mind spending a lot of money for the ultimate in portability, not to mention the engineering that has gone into making the Spectre 13 so slim and yet powerful. It's a stunning laptop from pretty much every angle. The gold accents might a bit too 'blingy' for some but others will love the design. The build, performance and display quality all really shine. We like the fact that you get multiple ports for connecting peripherals and that the adapters are bundled in the box. On the downside, battery life could have been better and the fan does get noisy when you're doing any graphics intensive work.

The HP Spectre 13 is desperate to appear a laptop of the future, and that comes with substantial pros and cons. Its supreme portability is quite wonderful, and while its design may polarise, it certainly is fancy. There's substance too, with a surprisingly powerful CPU for a laptop this thin and solid build in the keyboard and trackpad. Its message is a little confused, though. The processor courts enthusiasts, but that's exactly who's likely to be most annoyed by the lack of memory card slot and a traditional USB port. There's an audience for the Spectre 13, but if you've not signed-up to a wireless way of working yet you may want to think twice.

Thinner than a MacBook and elegantly designed, the HP Spectre 13 is up there with the best ultraportables. Sure, it may be a little pricey at upwards of £1,150, but it's pretty much unrivalled at the moment, with nothing Windows-based even coming close to this super thin and powerful ultraportable. Obviously, if you're not a big fan of Windows, then the 2016 MacBook is for you.

The gold finish might make it look more like a clutch bag than a laptop, but there’s no question the Spectre makes an impression - and that aggressive new HP logo is just the start. In the style stakes, it’s the biggest threat to Apple’s ultraportable crown since Dell’s carbon-clad XPS 13. It also ticks all the boxes when it comes to performance, and outmatches the Mac with multiple USB-C ports. The touchpad might be a bit tricky at times, but the excellent keyboard more than makes up for it.

Otherwise, the HP Spectre is a hit in our book, but it's higher price tag may sway you towards picking up a more affordable option, like the Dell XPS 13, Samsung Notebook 9, Asus ZenBook UX305, or any of the other myriad Ultrabooks out there. One thing here is for absolute certain: Apple better look out because it's no longer the only one that can make a luxury laptop with stunning performance to back it up.

Were this an ideal world, the Spectre 13 would have touch and run for longer without increasing in size. Right now, though, that's just not feasible, and if you're one of the people who is telling HP that supreme skinniness in an ultraportable is the number one goal, this is what those ambitions get you.

System builders continue to sacrifice power for portability, in a trend that’s concerning to those of prefer laptops with a little get-up-and-go under the hood. The HP pushes back on that decline in power by packing a competitive CPU into an expressive, thin, chassis.

Successfully competing with the various Macs on battery life is something to which Windows apparently doesn’t lend itself. These days Apple’s claiming a dozen hours of battery life for the MacBook Air, something it comes very close to actually achieving. So when you’re showing off your HP Spectre 13, you might want to just glide over battery life which, let’s face it, would be pretty impressive in any other context.

There is no doubting the fact that the HP Spectre is a powerful and impressively built business-grade laptop. And its premium design further makes it stand out from the crowd. But even with all of that, the Spectre isn't without its shortcomings. A glossy reflective display, average battery life and limited connectivity options are all downers for the laptop.

Compared to other Windows 10 laptops, the excellent Dell XPS 13 in the most similar configuration is available for $1,149. The XPS 13 delivers great battery life on a noteworthy design, but the Spectre is thinner and lighter. Lenovo’s Yoga 900 is $1,199 and includes a higher resolution display and a Core i7 as standard, which is another option at a similar price. All in all, the HP Spectre is a fantastic laptop that competes really well with the best Windows devices on the market and it is one of few ultrathin devices that don’t compromise on performance.

At the same time, the Spectre 13 offers more grunt than you'd typically find in a laptop of this stature, and makes less compromises than other ultra-thin notebooks thanks to multiple USB Type-C connectors. Out of the ultra-portables on the market, the Spectre 13 feels like the closest we've gotten to a super thin notebook that could be your primary computer (rather than just a secondary device). There's still a few compromises, but if you're okay with charging a little more often and using the odd USB Type-C adapter here and there,

There’s no denying that this is one sexy piece of hardware, but the price puts it slightly out of whack when compared to other premium Ultrabooks. For example, Razer’s new Blade is just $1849 for the version with a quad-core CPU with higher Turbo speed, along with a better screen; it’s just a little bit fatter than the Spectre.

With world-class good looks, boundary-pushing thinness, a brilliant display and, now, more powerful 7th generation Intel Core i performance, the HP Spectre has a lot going for it. Unfortunately, those highlights are countered by weak battery life and a shortage of creature comforts like an SD card reader and a touch-enabled display.

Positioned to compete with the likes of the Dell XPS 13 and the MacBook Pro, the HP Spectre 13 is pricier than the former, more affordable than the latter and more attractive than both.

HP’s Spectre 13 doesn’t go all-out on any particular aspect of the computing experience, making tradeoffs that HP thinks you’ll tolerate. Its cutting-edge 8th-gen Kaby Lake-R chip puts it at or near the top of the heap in general computing performance. In CPU- or GPU-intensive tasks, it’s a bit more average:

If you want a laptop that'll turn heads, the Spectre will do just that. Not only is it gorgeous, it delivers great performance as well. Thanks to the quad-core 8th-gen Intel processor, this ultraportable is designed for heavy use, so don't let the pretty face fool you. Though we love the minimalist design and comfy keyboard, we still had a few nitpicks.

The new version of the HP Spectre cuts down on the compromises, adding a touchscreen and a big power boost, while staying just as thin.

In terms of price, HP Malaysia is still keeping it a secret but I certainly expect it to be quite premium given that the first generation Spectre 13 itself was already priced from RM 5,999 to RM 6,899 at launch. Consumers can expect to see the new second-generation Spectre 13 in Malaysia this coming December – just in time for the Christmas.

If looks were everything, I'd tell you to run out and buy an HP Spectre 13 right now. At roughly the size of a magazine, it's small enough to take anywhere, and the new white color with gold trim screams premium. The keyboard is also surprisingly comfortable given how slim this system is. But considering it has below-average battery life, a display that's dimmer than competitors' and a proclivity to run warm, there's some trade-offs here..

HP has managed to address nearly all of our bugbears with the previous Spectre 13 in one fell swoop – smaller, faster, longer-lasting and with more features – making this year’s model a strong contender for the ‘best laptop’ list barring a full review.

Its design, its name, its feel. The Spectre attracts attention wherever it goes - that part already worked last year. The new model features an Intel Core upgrade to the i7-8550U and its design has received a final polish. Will the Spectre impress us as much as it did last year?

HP Spectre 13 (2018) Review – The Spectre 13 is certainly attractive. With a ceramic white finish and pale gold detailing, it stands out immediately. Compared with the rather masculine black and metallic surfaces featured on most portable PCs, it may take of getting used to, but if anything it looks even more expensive than it is.

In fact, I would dare say that it gives both the 13-inch Macbook Pro and Dell XPS 13 a run for their money, offering much of the same qualities that the competition excel at delivering. You can’t go wrong with the Spectre 13 if you’re the kind of person who believes that gadgets shouldn’t skimp on their looks.
