Reviews for the HP Spectre 13-v002ng

The HP Spectre offered surprisingly robust performance for such a thin and light machine. Typically, when a machine this thin comes in for testing here, we're prepared for some level of throttling of the main system processor. However, that absolutely was not the case. In fact, the HP Spectre routinely held a top tier position in all of our benchmark testing, whether in standard compute tasks or graphics and gaming, versus other laptops of its size and class.

With world-class good looks, boundary-pushing thinness, a brilliant display and top-notch performance, the HP Spectre has a lot going for it. Unfortunately, those highlights are countered by weak battery life, hot exhausts and a shortage of creature comforts like SD card readers or a touch-enabled display, which make comparisons between the Spectre and high maintenance hypercars hard to deny.

With an incredibly thin body and premium feel, the Spectre 13 is easy to recommend. It'll turn heads, but it's not a case of style over substance, as it beats or matches other top ultraportables we've tested. Because it costs $250 less than the Dell XPS 13 Touch and is a bit faster, it's an appealing option. That said, the XPS 13 boasts a higher-resolution touch display with minimal bezels along with the convenience of full-size USB ports, so it remains our Editors' Choice for high-end ultraportables.

Put simply, the HP Spectre 13 confounds expectations. When you see a notebook only 0.41 inch thin, you just know it'll have a Core M processor instead of a Core i7. You're sure it'll have a compromised, travel-free keyboard. You suspect it doesn't have room for an all-day battery. The Spectre makes those predictions wrong, wrong, wrong.

In the end, I have to give HP credit for accomplishing its goal of making the thinnest laptop possible without compromises. You’re truly getting Core i7 performance in a body most manufacturers would outfit with a low-power Core m. And let’s not forget that the Spectre 13.3 gives you not one, but two Thunderbolt 3 ports and a USB-C port.

It's a rare treat when we see what can only be described as a designer laptop that's 1) not priced way above the competition, 2) actually highly functional. The HP Spectre 13.3" Ultrabook has undeniable good looks, though it may be a bit uncomfortably fashion-oriented for some.

While the Spectre 13's design certainly won’t be to everyone's taste, the laptop is technically very impressive. If it lives up to its claims, it could be a genuinely compelling machine. Its thin and light build are by far the most appealing features, and if performance holds up this could be a serious contender for the best ultraportable this year.
