So with generally nice things to say about the Spectre x360 15, and impressive wins in some of our benchmark contests, why are we giving the system only three stars on our five-star scale? Well, it's not a matter of disliking our test unit so much as liking the $1,349 Core i7 4K model more, even if we'd rate the latter's three advantages in order as (1) 16GB rather than 8GB of memory, (2) 4K rather than full HD display, (3) Core i7 rather than Core i5 processor.

The 15-inch HP Spectre x360 15t (15-ap011dx) ($1,149.99 as tested) is a midrange convertible-hybrid laptop that feels as solid as a bank-vault door, thanks to a body that's mostly metal. It has a great selection of I/O ports, including full-size HDMI and USB-C ports. Because of those ports and a sixth-generation Intel Core i5 processor, the Spectre x360 15t (15-ap011dx)$1,149.99 at Best Buy won't seem obsolete for a long while. But its price is $550 higher than that of our current Editors' Choice, the Acer Aspire R14 (R5-471T-52EE)$699.99 at Best Buy, a system with comparable features and performance.

HP really delivers with the Spectre x360. The all-aluminum chassis gives it a sophisticated look while providing a very sturdy shell that should be able to withstand the abuse of being carted hither and yon. And carved their own design cues into its aluminum slabs, with standout signature styling that's understated but distinct to the brand.

The Spectre X360 15t is the best consumer 15-inch 2-in-1 we've tested, thanks to its strong combination design, display quality, audio and endurance. For $799, Dell's Inspiron 15 7000 offers similar performance, though you'll take a 3-hour hit in battery life and settle for a screen that's less impressive.

Ultimately, the Spectre x360 15 is an excellent 15-inch, 2-in-1 laptop that stands out with its thin, metal body, strong performance and long battery life. However, the same elegant engineering also raises the price and profile of this 15-inch hybrid into the realm of the 15-inch MacBook Pro and Dell XPS 15. But it has no hopes of keeping up with either when it's limited to just integrated graphics.
