Reviews for the Honor 20 Pro
Honor packs a whopping four photographic objectives on the rear of the Honor 20 Pro, which is a slight upgrade over the Honor 20's setup. Read in our test, whether it and the rather beefy battery justify the 100-Euro (~$111) premium for the Pro model.

The Honor 20 Pro has a lot of similarities to the Honor 20. One would question would I need the 20 pro when the Honor 20 is basically the same thing. Apart from a few changes. The key differences and what makes this phone worth the purchase are the optical zoom and overall camera. If I was going to find fault with this phone being left-handed the fingerprint sensor is on the wrong side of the phone but it is something you can handle and was not a deal-breaker. Once you get used to that you will find unlocking your phone much better compared to the face ID in an iPhone X that sometimes does not work. Another issue I have with this phone is it’s not water-resistant so be careful when you take your phone down by the pool or beach on holiday. The Honor 20 Pro is not able to use wireless charging but with massive battery life and the fact you have fast charging you can live without wireless charging.

Although the Honor 20 Pro doesn’t challenge the top performers overall, good exposure, white balance, and noise control ensure that it delivers pleasant selfies in most conditions. Add to that a good video performance, and the front camera is a competent, if not stellar, addition for those primarily interested in this device’s impressive specs and excellent main camera.

Our expectations before we tested the Honor 20 Pro may have been raised because of the good test results of its camera capabilities when launched in May. However, the overall results for audio were rather disappointing: the speaker scores were inadequate (but not the worst), although spatial playback was a particular problem. However, the flagship device from Honor fared better as a recording device. It did stumble occasionally, but only on the use cases that all the other devices have found difficult, such as recording electronic concerts. On the whole, the Honor is worth a consideration for those who don’t want to spend premium flagship money on a smartphone but still desire decent sound performance.

Of bigger concern is the fact that Honor is being subjected to some serious competition from the like of Xiaomi and Nokia (HMD), Samsung and Motorola – the last three of which have got a bigger high street presence. This would be fine if it was not for the £549.95 price tag, as this is a very hotly contended area on the market right now. The real problem is that other manufacturers are putting in devices with competing specs and also in some cases better specs for the same level of money or less. I feel that for this reason the more sensible choice is the cheaper but by no means inferior Honor 20. The exception to that rule is if you need a high performing camera phone without the high price ticket, then you would be best served with the Honor 20 Pro.

However, it’s easy to excuse these when considering what the phone is already offering in terms of performance and camera for its price – and you’re unlikely to need to charge it on the go.

The Honor 20 Pro performs very well at its price point and achieves the goal of providing excellent photographic capabilities. Overall, the Honor 20 Pro camera is vastly superior to the iPhone Xs camera, thanks to its low-light performance, high-powered zoom, and ultrawide versatility. The Honor 20 Pro is a great device. It has a stunning holographic design and fantastic cameras that will rival most other premium phones. My biggest issue is that I'm just not quite sure where it stands. Beautiful Huawei/Honor phones with a Kirin 980 and great cameras are common enough, with the P30, P30 Pro, Mate 20, Mate 20 Pro, and Honor View 20. I'm honestly not sure if you should buy this or the View 20, since they're so similar. The premium market needs to be more differentiated than that.

The Honor 20 Pro is intrinsically a superb phone with barely anything letting us down. Sadly, its retail price makes it hard to compete with devices - unless you absolutely need 8GB of RAM and 256GB storage.

Lastly, I would like to mention the fingerprint reader – it is great. I have to say that I do like a physical fingerprint reader over the under-screen/in-screen option. I guess it is just from my Xperia days, but it just feels right and 9 times out 10 it will work exactly as prescribed. Something that cannot be said for the former versions. So I commend Honor for being “brave” enough to buck the trend and use it here.

The Honor 20 Pro goes all out on cameras, and it's a great choice if you love taking selfies in particular. The fact that it costs so much less than the Huawei P30 and OnePlus 7 Pro makes it even more tempting. The Honor 20 Pro stacks up well against its rivals, and is a great alternative to the OnePlus 7 Pro - especially if you love taking selfies.

With the price of RM2,299, the HONOR 20 Pro is currently HONOR's highest-end smartphone with quadruple usable rear-facing cameras. Having a macro camera on a phone really is useful for me personally, although I think the software really needs drastic improvements.

If you like the HONOR 20, then you will LOVE the HONOR 20 Pro more. Coupled with the mystic design, gaming and battery performance, photography and videography potential. I personally think the HONOR 20 Pro is more suited for people who are in the lifestyle business (like vloggers) and the RM2299 is just at the right pricing. Given 111 points by DxOMark, it's certainly a powerhouse camera phone that most consumers can utilize, particularly in low-light photography and portrait modes. Even though I didn't take most of the photos, I really enjoyed looking at the photos taken by my colleagues.

Honor's most ambitious phone yet, the 20 Pro packs quad cameras onto the rear and a 32Mp selfie camera in a tiny punch-hole in the screen. We put this top-of-the-range contender through its paces. Then there’s the biggie: until the whole Huawei being shunned by all the big component makers thing is solved, it’s hard to recommend the Honor 20 Pro. Honor likes to tell us it operates as a separate company, but they are part of the same tech monolith, so will likely be affected all the same. Time will tell and we will updating this review...

But it's not quite perfect. The macro camera is a pointless addition in our view, there's no 3.5mm headphone jack and some details - such as the notification light being irritatingly in-your-face behind the front-facing ear speaker - aren't as refined as they could be. And why both the Pro and the standard model need to exist we're not sure, as we'd forego some of the Pro's camera extras and save £150 in buying the normal Honor 20.

Capacitive side fingerprints are higher than the screen fingerprint in both speed and recognition rate, especially when used under wet hands, the capacitive side fingerprints that can be quickly unlocked are dominant. Also because of the use of the side fingerprints, the Honor 20 Pro back look is seamless, with a compact body and a variety of gestures, it is easy to operate with one hand under the 6.26-inch screen.

Overall, the Honor 20 Pro is a great choice for anyone who wants the best performance, a great camera, and a modern design, without breaking the bank. It’s not an instant recommendation because of the potential implications of an Android ban, and the fact that it has strong competition. However, definitely give it a shot if you’ve found yourself tempted by Huawei, but can’t really justify paying $900-$1000 for the brand name.

All in all, the Honor 20 Pro is a great alternative to ever-growing prices of today's flagships even though the handset isn't the cheapest ones around. It enters the premium territory easily. And if you are willing to overlook the IPS LCD panel, the lack of 3.5mm audio jack and the punch-hole camera design, the Honor 20 Pro is an excellent all-rounder.

The Honor 20 Pro‘s four-camera camera shooting performance is excellent after the actual shooting experience. In the newly released DXO score ranking, the Honor 20 Pro scored 111 points, ranking second, and is the best product in the current glory mobile phone. So, the launch has happened and it’s now time to get up close and personal with the Honor 20 Pro. Now, before we get into this fully, I would like to thank Ricky West from TechTalk. He has provided us with the close-up shots of the device. I was only able to get a brief hands-on with the Moschino Honor 20 Pro at the event today, so he’s really helped out. Ricky runs a Youtube channel and it is well worth checking out.

The Honor 20 Pro is an excellent phone that combines some high-end specs with a price less intimidating than the Huawei P30 Pro’s or Samsung Galaxy S10’s. If you want maxed-out gaming power, you’re better off with a OnePlus 7. And the Asus ZenFone 6 has both more power, a larger battery and more eye-catching motorised camera.

The Honor 20 Pro makes it very close to the top of our DxOMark Mobile ranking, thanks to good Photo and Video performances across the board and no significant areas of weakness. Its zoom performance is topped only by the current number one device, the Huawei P30 Pro; and the 20 Pro’s ultra-wide-angle and macro camera, while not currently covered by our test protocol, should provide added value to many mobile photographers. If you’re in the market for a new smartphone with excellent imaging capabilities, the Honor 20 Pro should be very high up on your list of options, especially if you want to save a little bit of cash compared to the more established competition.

As always, Honor is offering good value flagship and also a bit more affordable version as well - the regular Honor 20. Both come equipped with plenty of flagship-worthy hardware while keeping up with the recent trends of unique gradient color options, punch-hole camera design and multiple cameras all of which are useful, by the way.

All in all, the Honor 20 Pro ends up being something like a more affordable version of Huawei’s flagships. Honor is not likely to sell this phone in the United States, but it will bring it to Europe and the UK, and the price is set at 600 euro, less than the price of a OnePlus phone, which is definitely very competitive.

Without knowing the exact price, it's hard to say how the Honor 20 Pro stacks up against its rivals, but if it's £600, then the OnePlus 7 Pro is a better deal. Closer to £500 and it may well be the phone for you if you love taking selfies. But if not, and you don't mind losing the wide and telephoto cameras, then the View 20 should be a tempting alternative, especially if you can live with 128GB of internal storage.

More worrisome than the actual product itself is Huawei’s and Honor’s position due to US Commerce Department’s addition of the company to the trade blacklist, with Google not supporting the vendor with software updates. Currently there’s just better alternatives out there, and buyers might find significantly better value and return for their money if they pay a little more for say a Galaxy S10 or a OnePlus 7 Pro instead of the Honor 20 Pro.
