The arrival of the Mate 20 Lite heralds the next generation of Huawei’s elite-performance smartphones. Huawei has equipped the device with the brand-new HiSilicon Kirin 710 SoC, which integrates an ARM Mali-G51 MP4 among other components; we are expecting good things of both chips. Find out in this review whether the Huawei Mate 20 Lite can meet expectations and if the device has any shortcomings.

In conclusion, the Mate 20 Lite offers a premium design that disguises its mid-range nature, outstanding battery life, and good photography chops. It packs a punch for its price of £379, and as a mid-range phone that I really enjoyed using (apart from the odd crashing app), I would generally have no hesitation in recommending the Mate 20 Lite.

All-in-all, the Mate 20 Lite is a decent mid-range phone retailing for £379. Its design has been brought down from 2018 flagships which makes it look like a top-end phone, and generally there isn’t much wrong with it at this price. It doesn’t seem to offer anything new or radical at this price point, though, and I would expect most people will be just as happy with the Honor 10 or ZenFone 5 – the latter which I think does have the slightly superior camera setup.

The tech has promise, I’m hoping it will be better realized when we see the real Mate 20. This isn’t a bad phone, it’s just not a compelling option for the money, given what else is out there right now. The mid-range has become incredibly competitive, and you need to do a lot more to stand out.

One look at the Mate 20 Lite's neat and tidy exterior design would suggest it's a great phone. But it's let down by context: the Honor Play is £100 cheaper and that phone is far more powerful and stable. Plus the whole idea of the Mate series is for powerful, top-end devices, thus the Lite is a contradiction to that very premise.

The Huawei Mate 20 Lite is a large handset, and that's both a blessing and a curse. The 6.3-inch screen lends itself well to media-rich tasks, but the phone can be tricky to pocket. It has good battery life and a solid chassis, although the glass back does attract fingerprints.

The Huawei Mate 20 Lite is a handsome phablet with an attractive and all-encompassing display and some impressive dual-camera tricks. However, its performance is only alright, and there are some tantalizing alternatives for similar or even less money.

Having the flagship's name is good and all, but Huawei's priced the Mate 20 lite without accounting for the 'lite' bit too much, and we're not liking the numbers. It's a good overall package, with excellent battery life, decent display and good image quality from its two (real) cameras. But other phones offer those too, some even outperform the Mate in key areas, and often at a lower price. Carrier subsidies could sway things in any direction, but at full retail (north of €400)р we find the Mate 20 tough to recommend.

The Mate 20 Lite is a difficult phone to place. It looks attractive enough, if not exactly striking, and offers decent mid-range performance while falling short of the flagship processors found in similarly priced Honor phones.

The Huawei Mate 20 Lite brings some lovely looks and a great feel in the hand, along with a competent spec list, to the party. However, it's not the most powerful phone from the brand, and looks to make up that deficit mostly through design.

The Huawei Mate 20 Lite looks as though it’s crammed full of features and equipped to dish out respectable performance, despite not rocking the newly-unveiled Kirin 980 flagship chipset destined for its more powerful siblings. Pricing places it in a tricky position, though, as it finds itself lodged between more affordable offerings with beefier specs (like the aforementioned Honor Play) and more powerful handsets like the OnePlus 6, which isn’t a huge leap cost-wise.

The Mate 20 Lite is a conundrum: it's well designed and well built, but only succeeds in getting us excited for the future Mate 20 proper. The Lite is a solid phone, sure, but it's also superfluous...

The Huawei Mate 20 Lite will go on sale in the UK for 380 pounds (~$500), starting in October. That’s not exactly cheap, in comparison to devices like the Pocophone F1 or the Honor Play, but Huawei clearly hopes that its brand cachet and AI features will help the Mate 20 Lite stand out in the market.

The Lite will cost £379 when it hits shelves, which isn't a bad price for the spec sheet. It is, however, not much less than the OnePlus 6 ($644 at Amazon.com), which at £469 comes with more RAM and a splash-resistant design. I'm looking forward to seeing how these two phones compare in the full review.

There’s more here to consider besides what an excellent phone the Mate 20 is. I’ve truly enjoyed my time with it outside of the software issues I experienced. If there was no baggage, I would recommend this device to friends and family no problem. But, there is and that gives me pause.

The Mate 20's screen is also striking. The screen-to-bezel ratio is extremely small, so there's very little to get in the way when you're playing games or watching movies. Image quality is also top-notch, but the display uses IPS technology and not OLED, like the Mate 20 Pro. Gaming and graphics performance, while good, isn't on the same level as many current-gen smartphones either, so if you're a heavy gamer this might not be the option for you. For most users though, the Mate 20 is an extremely snappy and relatively affordable phone that will handle daily smartphone duties with aplomb.

Overall, you get a lot of bang for your buck but this phone doesn’t live in a bubble. There are a lot of other great phones out there for similar pricing but with much better brand recognition, including devices like the Samsung Galaxy S9 and Note 9. That’s not to say this isn’t worth picking up, but before you make the plunge it’s never a bad idea to consider checking out the competition as well.

Although it sits at the bottom of the series, the Mate 20 is still every bit worthy to be called a flagship smartphone of 2018. It even has some advantage over the Mate 20 Pro in some aspects and compared to its predecessor, the Mate 10 and Mate 10 Pro; it’s significantly better. When it comes to pricing, the Mate 20 is cheaper than the Mate 20 Pro at PHP 40,990. It’s also more affordable than other flagship smartphones in the market. So if you’re looking for an upgrade but don’t want to splurge on the extra features, this is the Mate to get.

My biggest complaint overall is that you can't buy it in the U.S., unless you buy it on Amazon or something, but it's not optimized for U.S. LTE bands. This is really for reasons outside of Huawei's control; the U.S. government thinks that Huawei is spying on users and sending information back to the Chinese government.

And aside from the substantial price difference, the Mate 20 has a few additional features that its more expensive brother doesn’t have: 3.5mm jack, a physical fingerprint scanner that’s more ergonomic to use, and a bigger, easier to use display.

Summing it all up, the Huawei Mate 20 is a big and powerful Android phone. It has incredible battery life, fast charging and a fast chip inside it. But you get an LCD screen which may be bright, but it doesn't quite have the more impressive colors of an AMOLED one. The phone also lacks a few useful extras like wireless charging. Most notably, it can’t quite match the rest of late 2018 flagships when it comes to camera performance. The unclear update situation is another con.

In typical Huawei fashion, the battery seems to last forever and it also charges fast with Huawei's charger. The screen looks great, performance is flawless, reception is good (even in the US where not all bands are supported), and that rear fingerprint scanner is faster than anything I've tried at unlocking your phone.

Overall, the Mate 20’s are a big step forward for Huawei. However, I feel like there’s some issues on the Mate 20 Pro that prevent it from really being an outstanding device. The Mate 20 Pro comes with a launch price of 1049€, and at this price range we really expect a no-compromise device. Unfortunatly, I feel like the issues with the display as well as only average battery life represent notable compromises. Supposedly the units with BOE screens have far fewer issues, but this isn’t much of an argument if you have to play the device lottery in order to get a good unit.

The Huawei Mate 20 isn't a crippled Mate 20 Pro. It's one powerful smartphone, with thoughtfully picked features, and it's more than capable to stand its ground. We can see many people deciding on saving €300 and opting for the less fancier but equally capable Mate 20, if they get that kind of choice at all, of course.

The Mate 20 has a smaller battery than the Mate 20 Pro at 4000mAh, though we have a feeling that it’ll probably last quite a bit longer since the display runs at a lower resolution compared to its bigger brother. Unfortunately, while the phone has fast charging capabilities, it’s nowhere near as fast as the Mate 20 Pro’s 30-minute 70% guarantee, nor does it have wireless charging.

We’re seriously impressed by the Huawei Mate 20. Though it doesn’t quite boast the bells and whistles of the Mate 20 Pro, the Mate 20 is an amazing smartphone in its own right. It boasts impressive internals that offer great speed and performance no matter the task, and the trio of lenses on the rear capture gorgeously detailed, well-lit images. Master AI 2.0 not only changes camera settings to get the best possible shot, but can actually track subjects to make sure the focus is always perfect.

The Huawei Mate 20 distills much of what makes the Mate 20 Pro an excellent phone into something that’s different, though not necessarily inferior. It costs less, offers more screen and has a headphone jack. If you crave the cutting-edge bells and whistles the Pro packs, then look elsewhere. If on the other hand you want utility, big power, great battery and camera performance, the plain-Jane Mate 20 could be just the ticket.

Overall, we feel that Huawei has certainly made a splash with these new phones. All three models look great, and their camera quality and displays seemed great in the short time we were able to spend with them. The Mate 20 and Mate 20 Pro were easy enough to hold and operate with one hand, with only the minor difficulties of their curved glass fronts. The relatively larger Mate 20 X was definitely on the bulky side, usually requiring two hands to operate and being rather awkward to hold - this could be an acceptable trade-off, however, as the smartphone is positioned as a gaming and entertainment device. In terms of performance, all three phones felt rather snappy. We had no trouble with their UIs or multitasking, and even in the camera app. We also played about 10 minutes of Asphalt 9 Legends on the Mate 20 Pro, and felt no lag or discernible heating of the glass body.

Yes, without hesitation. Until we see the next round of smartphones early next year like the Samsung Galaxy S10 or those using the 7nm Qualcomm 855 processor, Huawei appears to have a giant lead over the rest.

The Mate 20 is clearly sitting behind the flashier Mate 20 Pro in Huawei’s line-up, yet its clever approach to the notch makes it feel like one of the best Android phones around for people who want an all-screen phone.

The standard Mate 20 doesn't need the cool, forward-looking features of its Pro sibling to be a powerful, desirable phone.

It's clear Huawei wants to hit a lower price point with the standard Mate 20 for people who just want a large, high-performance smartphone without any of the extra-expensive goodies. As it has been for the past year or so, the Pro series is the real jewel in Huawei's crown, and the far more interesting device for enthusiasts. Whether you value a high-quality, versatile camera setup, the biggest battery of any mainstream phone, the latest Android software, or being able to save your iPhone X-owning friends from battery anxiety, you'll find Mate 20 Pro a formidable piece of technology.

And anyways - it's not like either of the Mate 20 phones feels like a compromise. Rather they both seem like proper flagship that we can't wait to put through their paces.

The standard Mate delivers a strong innings, but the Pro model outshines it in every department. When it comes to future-facing features the Pro is the way to go.

It also plays the classic “me first” Huawei game, arriving with a next-gen CPU before any of its Android rivals. Would we rather have a Mate 20 Pro? Of course, particularly as the Mate 20 doesn’t have the cleanest-looking screen in its class. However, this still has the potential to be a critical smash.

New to the market is the latest flagship smartphone from Huawei. Following the Mate series, last year’s Mate 10 and Mate 10 Pro are succeeded by the Mate 20 and the Mate 20 Pro, featuring the 7nm Hisilicon Kirin 980 chipset, along with a whole new design with added features. Out of the two, the Mate 20 Pro is aiming for the upsell, with new features such as reverse wireless charging, an OLED HDR display, an IP68 rating, a larger battery, and support for a 40W Supercharge.

After overtaking Apple, HUAWEI is aiming its sights at Samsung. It is a steep mountain to climb, with a huge gap in their sales, and the overwhelming popularity of the yet-to-be-released Samsung Galaxy Note9, but they’re hoping that the upcoming HUAWEI Mate 20 will help them gain on Samsung.

By combining the highest quality design, the best cameras at launch (still good by today's standards, just no longer the very best) and superb battery longevity, the Mate 20 Pro asserts its position among 2018's top flagship phones. It's still a great buy in 2019 too.

With MWC starting next week and plenty of new smartphones expected to be unveiled, the Mate 20 Pro should still hold its own. Not only does it offer fantastic performance but it boasts one of the best set of cameras available in a smartphone today. Even if Huawei does announce its successor, that just means you’ll be able to score the Mate 20 Pro for a more affordable price.

Huawei packed the Mate 20 Pro with a ton of handy features such as wireless charging, updated cameras, enhanced AI capabilities, an improved EMUI experience, and battery life that just doesn’t know when to quit. There’s also a few gimmicks in the form of reverse wireless charging which isn’t very useful thanks to its snail-like charging speed and the ability to make animated 3D objects. Both are party-tricks that while fun to show off a few times, will hold no long-term interest or use. And that’s perfectly fine because the Mate 20 Pro has more than enough essential functions and features to make up for a couple of gimmicky additions.

Coming to the device verdict, If you have a Budget of Rs 65,000 for buying a new smartphone, go for Huawei Mate 20 Pro. You will not be disappointed. It has an attractive design which will not go unnoticed, the camera will not let you miss out on an opportunity to capture a memory, battery is good enough to run a marathon, the display will make you fall in love and performance to impress you. As everything can’t be perfect, Mote 20 Pro has a couple of issues as well. The UI needs further refinement and finger print scanner of the device needs a major overhaul.

The Mate 20 Pro is Huawei's best flagship yet. It has better cameras and better performance than both the Mate 10 Pro and P20 Pro. Thanks to the power of the Kirin 980 you've not only got a very fast device in your hands, but it can finally stabilise video at 4K, though it's a slight shame that it can't quite manage 60fps given the price.

The Mate 20 Pro shows a nice improvement over the front-camera results of its predecessor, the P20 Pro, with better results in a couple of key areas: dynamic range in high-contrast scenes, color saturation in lower light, and white balance using flash with additional lighting have all noticeably improved. Opportunities for improvement remain, particularly extending the range of focus for better detail in long-range shots; addressing the strong artifacts on faces; and reducing the white balance irregularities that persist outdoors. Huawei’s latest device is a fairly solid performer for front-camera video, too, with effective stabilization, good detail at close range with relatively well-controlled noise, and acceptable color in most conditions. As it ranks near the center of our database, better results are possible, but the Huawei Mate 20 Pro offers acceptable front-camera results to go with the very impressive results of its rear camera.

The Huawei Mate 20 Pro is a super-phone in every sense, and that is especially true when looking at its camera. The triple-lens setup is capable of producing excellent photo and video results across all shooting situations and deservedly shares the top position in the DxOMark Mobile ranking with its slightly smaller sibling, the P20 Pro, outperforming prominent competitors such as the iPhone XS Max, the Samsung Galaxy Note 9, and the HTC U12+. It’s worth keeping in mind that the Mate 20 Pro comes with a super-wide-angle lens that does not have an impact on our score, but compared to the P20 Pro and other devices that don’t have this feature, the lens offers an added degree of flexibility that could be very important to many photographers.

The Mate 20 Pro’s battery life is impressive. It can last a whole day and night, though it will understandably be gasping by the time you wake up. Nonetheless, we still had confidence in it setting off the alarm in the morning! There’s not a lot the Mate 20 gets wrong as a handset. The price would be the biggest turnoff, followed by the EMUI, Huawei’s Android.

Overall, the Huawei Mate 20 Pro has got to be one of the most powerful flagship smartphones currently available. Potentially offering nearly any feature you could want, it still feels a bit like a work in progress as each update polishes up the features and brings in new features as well, but make no mistake, this smartphone has nearly everything for everyone. Want a sleek, unique, easy to grip design? Check. Should you buy it for its cameras? Definitely. Does it let you play games and everything else on maximum but still saves battery life? A big YES.

Absolutely! The Mate 20 Pro is a jack of all trades. And unlike the popular saying, it IS a master of them all. A few things that I didn’t mention include an IP68 rating for water resistance, wireless charging, dual SIM support, an IR blaster to control appliances, a notification LED which seems to be disappearing of late and all of these are just minute additions to what feels like a complete powerhouse of a smartphone. That brings me to probably the only aspect which would deter consumers from investing in this smartphone, and that’s the price at which the Mate 20 Pro retails.

The Huawei Mate 20 Pro is a feature-packed phone and that is what I expect from a flagship device from any company. Huawei shows that they are able to pack a large number of cutting edge features into a flagship phone and show how they became the number two phone maker in the world. The Mate 20 Pro is able to stand out from the crowd when it comes to performance, battery life, camera quality, LTE connectivity and the crisp OLED screen. Huawei did a great job on this phone as it really doesn’t leave you feeling like you are missing out on any key features.

Although Huawei has positioned the Mate 20 Pro as a camera phone, it has all the qualities of an all-rounder smartphone — from water- and dust-resistance capabilities (IP68) to premium glass-metal-glass design and QHD+ resolution curved AMOLED screen. Priced at Rs 69,990, the phone might seem to be on the pricier side, but considering the fact that most premium flagship smartphones also have a similar pricing, the Mate 20 Pro is a complete package in its segment.

I've been singing the Mate 20 Pro's praises throughout this review, but it's time to mention the elephant in the room, which is that U.S. availability is once again limited. Sure, you can buy one off of Amazon, but carriers won't sell it. This is of no fault of Huawei's, unless the allegations from the U.S. government are true, which I don't personally believe them to be. I believe that the lack of Huawei devices on the U.S. market is a massive disservice to the American consumer, because these are magnificent devices.

While the Mate 20 Pro is going to be seen as Huawei's leading device this year, the P20 Pro has all the makings of a flagship phone at a price which should probably be considered mid-range. While it lacks wireless charging, runs a weaker processor and doesn't have the fancy four-camera setup seen on the Mate 20 Pro, it's arguably a better deal if you're concerned about spending £700 on a phone. Thanks to a great design, punchy screen, decent stamina and fantastic photographic setup, the P20 Pro is easy to recommend.

There's no doubt that the Huawei Mate 20 Pro is an all-rounder Android smartphone. It comes with smashing looks, packs one of the most powerful processor in the market, delivers a solid camera performance and boasts of some of the most interesting features that you could ask for from your smartphone. But at the same time, a completely new SD card support may not impress everyone out there. Also, the much-touted reverse charging feature may is not practical in most situations. But yes, it surely may come handy in emergency situations considering Mate 20 Pro's 4200 mAh battery capacity. With smart pricing, Huawei is clearly targeting Apple iPhone's marketshare in India. However, the possibility of someone switching from iOS to Android with Huawei Mate 20 Pro is not too high. On the other hand, for users looking for a top-end Android smartphone, the latest flagship from Huawei could be a good choice.

Without a doubt, comparisons are going to be drawn between Huawei’s latest flagship and that of Samsung’s Galaxy Note 9. That is understandable, since they are in similar price brackets. Although I need to reserve judgment for the latter to arrive for review before making that assessment, I can say this: the Mate Pro is simply Huawei’s best phone to date. Fast, beautiful, brilliant cameras, a whopping big battery and promising AI infused functionality also makes this one of the best smartphones to come out of 2018 as well, if you can afford it.

Unfortunately for US consumers, it doesn’t tick the most important box of all: availability. Right now, whether that’s down to the US government or other reasons, there’s no official plan to bring the Mate 20 Pro to this market. That’s a shame, and I’d certainly say it’s worth looking to Amazon, eBay, or other resellers to get your hands on what could well be the year’s most impressive phone.

Having played around with the Mate 20 Pro and having tried the many features it is packed with, I have come to a conclusion that the handset is the most tech-packed phone of the year, and Huawei has applied technology in more tasteful ways than it ever has before. It's used to fit a large screen into a phone narrower, and therefore easier to handle, than the competition.

In a year of incremental upgrades, Huawei has made huge strides and the Mate 20 Pro is the culmination of all of these efforts. The Mate 10 Pro last year was a really good smartphone, the P20 Pro earlier this year was great but the Mate 20 Pro? Well, this is an outstanding smartphone. It's easily one of the top 3, if not the best, smartphones this year and it's the phone that seems to have everything. Next year will be see some major changes to the smartphone industry, but until the first wave of 2019 phones come around, Alex and I will both be keeping this in our pockets.

Really, this is really quite a remarkable computerised phone with some really very strong and interesting features. Huawei's distributors/resellers – firms like 3 and O2 in the UK, tell me there's strong pre-order demand for the device. Deep pockets will be needed to fork out for the unit on its own, but the retailers/distributors are going to offer plans which mean that you will pay as you go by opting for a tariff that reflects the price of the phone. Huawei might not have the instant recognition that Apple has for its iPhone range, but this machine is a goer. I have hardly begun to check out the myriad other features. I can't benchmark it because I just won't, but will say that its battery life is really very, very good. And it does recharge very fast.

The Huawei Mate 20 Pro is a good phone, with some great and unique features, and once its price falls to become more attainable, it’ll be a real contender. As of the present moment, it’s a hugely indulgent purchase for those who are (a) outside the US, and (b) absolutely convinced they need its extensive list of good features and desirable specs.

Summing it all up, the Huawei Mate 20 Pro is a fast Android phone with a beautiful design and a gorgeous screen. It has a solid battery life, super fast charging and one of the most versatile cameras around. And it has a ton of storage on board. Add to that not one, but two innovative secure unlock systems: the optical in-screen fingerprint scanner (which mostly works, but is a bit fiddly), and the fast and reliable 3D face recognition system (which works like a breeze).

The Huawei Mate 20 Pro is one of, if not the, best phones ever made. It delivers an experience that leaves absolutely nothing to be desired and, for all real-world intents and purposes, it is perfect. It's a phone that you'll soon fall in love with, and one that confirms Huawei's position as the most ambitious, pioneering smartphone maker in the world right now.

Overall, there’s so much to like in the Mate 20 Pro, it’s Huawei’s vision of a 2019 flagship, effectively, with only the one multi-function opening in the bottom and everything else glossy, sealed, waterproof and ultra-premium, here shown in the popular Twilight finish, debuted in the P20 Pro six months ago. It’s compelling and addictive, but questions do remain about its biggest USP, the rear cameras, which currently over-process and underperform – in my opinion – unless you go down the hugely geeky ‘Pro/RAW’ route.

Huawei's gone even larger than the Mate 20 Pro with a 7.2-inch X model, which oddly costs less than the Mate 20 Pro but seems targeted at gamers. The phone has a larger 5,000-mAh battery and added cooling tech, a "combination of graphene film and vapor chamber" that Huawei promises is unique to phones and hasn't been done before. It sounds like Huawei's trying to go up against the Razer Phone 2 and Asus ROG in the Android phone gaming space. It doesn't have 3D Face Unlock, though. It starts at 899 euros with 6GB RAM and 128GB storage.

Of course, that is all determined by pricing and availability, but Huawei has clearly decided that an ‘everything including the kitchen sink’ approach to their flagships might be the way to tempt even more buyers globally — and I’d be inclined to agree.

The price for the Huawei Mate 20 Pro has been set at €1079 or somewhere around the Php 67,500 mark but, before you blow your lids, remember that we get a significant price cut when these devices hit out shores so we’re hoping that the same can be said for the entire Mate 20 line. We’ve got our fingers crossed but it wouldn’t hurt if you joined us.

The company is all but invisible to consumers in the US, where less than 1 per cent of its revenue is generated. Political headwinds related to Chinese manufacturers and national security haven't helped, and in Australia the brand has taken a hit after the federal government mandated Huawei and other Chinese companies be excluded from contributing technology to next generation 5G mobile networks.

You’ve got to hand it to Huawei. The Mate 20 Pro is the most feature-packed phone I have ever used and I love that it’s trying new things.

The Mate 20 Pro is a new challenger that brings an in-display fingerprint scanner, an ultra-wide angle camera, wireless charger, curved display, and 3D depth sensing camera within an iPhone X-style notch. Can the Huawei P20 Pro really replace a DSLR? I won’t be selling my DSLR or Fuji X100T mirrorless anytime soon, but… I’m not ready to put down the P20 Pro yet either. I’m off on another work trip this week and have actually packed the phone instead of my Fuji, so there’s definite potential for this brilliant little camera phone.

The primary difference with this device is aesthetic. The Porsche Design Huawei Mate 20 Pro has two strips of genuine cow leather on the back, surrounding a center strip of black glass. This glass also embeds the cubed camera array, and there is no camera bump like there is on the standard Mate 20 Pro. Near the center of the glass, you’ll find a Porsche Design logo, with the Huawei logo directly underneath.

Aimed primarily at smartphone gamers and movie buffs, the massive 7.2-inch screen and fast processing engine are key selling points for the Huawei Mate 20 X. If photography is also an important factor, however, you can be confident of shooting some great images with Huawei’s super-sized smartphone. Its triple-camera setup ensures good results for ultra-wide and zoom shots, and the main camera’s Quad-Bayer sensor delivers excellent exposures in all lighting conditions. Some improvements to soft bokeh shots, a reduction in noise when using zoom indoors, and enhancing fine details across the board would help improve the device’s score further, however. Those issues aside, the Huawei Mate 20 X remains a very capable device for smartphone photography enthusiasts.

The Huawei Mate X records and plays audio better overall than any of the other phones we have tested, which is in line with its positioning as a device aimed at those who want an excellent multimedia experience. It even edged out the excellent Apple iPhone XS Max by a point. Use case scores were consistently high across all our use cases, including concert and video recording as well as meeting and memo audio recording. However, memo recording would benefit from a more directional microphone response so that it would be easier to understand the recorded voice over background noise. One quirk that doesn’t directly affect the sound, but does concern the user experience, is that the music player interface doesn’t allow full navigation of the music catalog when held in portrait orientation.

If you're looking for a two-handed mega-sized phone then the Mate 20 X is a genuinely fantastic media powerhouse. It has a great (and, yes, massive) screen, further enhanced by great audio, and the battery just goes on and on whatever you throw at it.

If you want a premium flagship smartphone with the largest screen possible then this is it. With practically the same specs as the Mate 20 Pro including the same excellent cameras, the Mate 20 X is a curious smartphone that we enjoyed using far more than we expected given the size. Performance is flawless in 2019 and the winning combination of large battery and 1080p display is attractive. If you want a smaller phone then you have many other options but the Mate 20 X is flying the flag for screen real estate with build quality that is right out the top drawer. It doesn’t have full waterproofing or wireless charging but with a proper fingerprint sensor and a headphone jack, we are sold.

Initially described as the “best portable mobile gaming machine” on the market by Huawei’s CEO, it’s notable the Chinese juggernaut gradually softened its gaming-centric marketing for the Mate 20 X over time, instead focusing on the phone’s size and specs. This should’ve been the approach from the outset, as the Mate 20 X is a bonafide media monster with an eye-popping display, killer camera, 1-2 day battery life, and enough raw power to handle almost anything you can throw at it. Yet, those outlandish launch claims still linger in the memory and the Mate 20 X doesn’t get anywhere close to delivering on Huawei’s originally ridiculous promises that it’d crafted the ultimate gaming device.

With a bigger screen, bigger battery and smaller notch than the Mate 20 Pro, the Huawei Mate 20 X also has the same camera set up and adds a headphone jack. If you want the most screen possible, it might be for you. You lose the curved display, wireless charging, full water resistance and secure Face ID but for many that won’t matter if a huge display, outstanding camera and great performance are top of your list. If you want a normal size phone, get the Mate 20 Pro.

There’s also competition from within from the Mate 20 Pro. For an extra 150 euros, the Pro model has a higher resolution display, improved waterproofing, reverse, wireless, and faster charging, and upgraded biometrics. Likewise, if you have cash to burn, Huawei’s $2,600 Mate X folding phone is on the horizon with its even larger 8-inch fold-out display.

The Huawei Mate 20 X is not everyone's cup of tea because of that giant 7.2" screen. While it is a joy for gamers, it might be a nightmare as a daily driver because of that size. Then again, the Mate 20 X is about 15-17mm taller than the most recent bunch of phablets - the Galaxy Note9, iPhone XS Max, Mi Mix 3 - so its footprint might be not so tough to stomach after all.

However, if you’re wanting a regular, generously sized phablet, it ticks most of the right boxes. The screen is a little on the warm side but it’s nicely sharp and HDR-ready. Plus, the Mate 20 X’s size makes it superb for Netflix binging on-the-go. Stellar battery life and performance round-off a decent package.

Overall, this is a great phone and is actually the first Huawei smartphone that I've fallen in love with (also the reason why I'm addicted to mobile gaming, specifically, Mobile Legends). But what do you think? Let us know in the comments below and read more reviews on TechNave.com!

After testing out the battery, we think the Mate 20 X is more than capable of satisfying most users with its huge 5000mAh battery. Since the phone can handle the entertainment aspect easily, imagine how long it can last if you are just using it for social media. Moreover, it also has a SuperCharge technology that makes charging on-the-go faster and more convenient.

The Huawei Mate 20 X is a great smartphone for those looking to game or binge Netflix on the move, but for many it will simply be too big.

And anyways - it's not like either of the Mate 20 phones feels like a compromise. Rather they both seem like proper flagship that we can't wait to put through their paces.

The Mate 20 X 5G is a strange beast. On the one hand, it’s the perfect streaming and gaming device, poised to take advantage of fast data speeds thanks to its huge screen and ample power. On the other, the 4G version packs a bigger battery and costs half the price in the UK. So while in isolation it’s a great phone, until 5G coverage improves, or its price goes down, it is a tough sell at £999.

If you’re not fussed about 5G you can just get the significantly cheaper standard Mate 20 X which has all the aforementioned but 5G. At the time of writing it was retailing for £499.95 at John Lewis.

If you're looking for a two-handed mega-sized phone then the Mate 20 X is a genuinely fantastic media powerhouse. It has a great (and, yes, massive) screen, further enhanced by great audio, and the battery just goes on and on whatever you throw at it.

Pick it up at the right price and you’ll have a brilliant monster of a smartphone on your hands - though you might have to wait a few months before you can really take advantage of its lightning fast 5G.

Although it's easy to get ahead of ourselves, this 5G ready beast isn't as feature-loaded as Samsung's Galaxy S10, or as super as the P30 Pro - really, its biggest plus point is being 5G enabled and we're still waiting on the 5G switch to be flicked. Interestingly, Huawei hasn't chosen its top products to fit with 5G - the Mate X will be a 5G phone, but we don't know when that's coming and the P30 and Pro were both 4G, which does feel like Huawei is playing it cautiously.
