The Huawei P40 Lite is the most affordable smartphone in the new P40 lineup. With its 6.4-inch display, the octa-core Kirin 810 SoC, 128 GB of storage, and a 48-MP four-camera system, it competes in the fiercely contested mid-range segment. Only one thing is lacking: There is no Google Play and no other Google Services. Our test shows how well the P40 Lite fares despite this lack.
In one area, the dominance is great! We let the current Huawei P40 series compete in a camera comparison. How big are the differences between the two top dogs, the Huawei P40 and P40 Pro? Can the cheapest Huawei P40 Lite surprise positively as it did last year? Our review of the Huawei P40 smartphones will reveal this.

The Huawei P40 Lite puts in a very decent overall performance, providing over two full days of autonomy with average use — several hours more than the Oppo Find X3 Lite, but admittedly far behind the Samsung. Where the P40 Lite really impresses, however, is for how it soundly beats the Samsung Galaxy M51 for charging, and how it comes in just a few points below the M51 for efficiency. In short, the P40 Lite provides the best charging experience in its price range, along with very good efficiency, and even with a small battery, it’s not bad in terms of autonomy either.

Yes, the Huawei P40 Lite is not a perfect device and requires more app tinkering than any other mainstream droid phone. But it has the price and the specs to make your time worthwhile. In the end, the fate of Huawei is up to you, and your decision to support it or not.

In our review, the Huawei P40 Pro presents itself as a great piece of hardware not least due to the fact that it is equipped with the best smartphone camera out there. We expected nothing less. Unfortunately, the ban from Google services makes a clear recommendation difficult. Read on to find out which users should still consider the Huawei phone and what drawbacks need to be taken into account.
4 categories, 3 winners. The crème de la crème of Android smartphone photography in comparison: Samsung's and Xiaomi's pixel behemoths Galaxy S20 Ultra and Mi 10 Pro, a P40 Pro, and the new OnePlus 8 Pro pitted against each other to find out which one offers the best camera.

The P40 Pro is a stunner of a device. It ticks so many boxes: a great screen, superb build quality, incredible battery life, and of course that world-class camera system. If you handed me the P40 Pro and the Galaxy S21 and asked me to pick, I’d bite your arm off for the P40 Pro — if it had access to Google services. For those who don’t require Google services on their smartphone, this is one of the best devices on the market right now and I wholeheartedly recommend it. It’s the handset to buy if you really want the best camera ever put into a smartphone. That’s not the situation for most people, however, and there are still many users who do require Google services. For those, I would say to skip this model and, if you still want a top-flight Huawei smartphone, go with the previous’ still-brilliant and Google-powered P30 Pro.

A year from release, it’s looking more like these patchwork solutions are the best the Huawei P40 Pro will ever see. A few more popular apps may be months down the line, but who knows. It’s also looking likely that the handset will remain stuck on Android 10, or some hybrid form, while other smartphones will see Android 12 this year. What we’ve seen and heard about Harmony OS looks no more promising for solving these issues either.

While it has good control of motion and shows acceptable color overall, these strong points may not be enough to compensate for the Huawei P40 Pro’s problems with aliasing, touch accuracy, and smoothness, and especially for its darker than average default brightness settings. This lack of luminance affects display readability both indoors and outdoors, and heavily impacts its video sub-score as well.

The Huawei P40 Pro ups the ante over the P40, featuring a bigger battery, a periscope camera for 5x optical zoom, fast charging, wireless charging, and more. Still no Google services though.

The Huawei P40 Pro refines last year’s P30 Pro to near perfection. It takes the P series’ main focus, the camera, and innovates in a big way — literally. With a massive camera sensor, 90Hz screen, and updated internals, there’s a lot to love about the P40 Pro. It’s a shame that the lack of Google services impacts it in such a negative way.

Huawei is still making flagships for the rest of the world even though their phones are banned in the USA. Its time to open up the Huawei P40 Pro to see whats inside, and see where that earpiece is. The exterior of the phone has no earpiece grill... but its gotta be in there somewhere. The only way to find out... is by taking the P40 Pro apart.

The P40 Pro’s overall audio performance is a mix of highs and lows. Multimedia playback is where users will clearly notice the drawbacks of having only one speaker on an otherwise top-end phone. For those who use their phones mainly to watch movies, listen to music or play games, the P40 Pro’s mono speaker will leave them desperately wanting for more in audio playback, especially when they compare the audio sound with other phones, such as the Xiaomi Mi 10 Pro, or just about any current iPhone. P40 Pro users are better off pairing their earphones to the device for a fuller and more enjoyable audio experience. That said, its results were in line with other single-speaker devices.

I wrote about this extensively after using the Mate 30 Pro for a while, and I wondered if Huawei would spin some deals for the P40 Pro to make it more usable for a mainstream Western audience. As far as I can tell, basically nothing has changed. If you want to read more about what it’s like to use a Huawei phone without Google, I encourage you to read my earlier piece. But the bottom line is that it almost certainly isn’t worth the effort. You could use this as your main phone, sure. You could’ve used a Windows Phone in 2015, too. I would not have recommended that you do either.

Huawei's P40 series of smartphones are on sale now in Europe and the UK. The range includes the base P40, the P40 Pro and the P40 Pro Plus, and Huawei hopes they'll take the fight to the likes of the iPhone 11 Pro, Galaxy S20 and OnePlus 8. I've been using the P40 Pro -- the middle child of the three -- and have been putting it through its paces. The phone is available for £900 (about $1,120 or AU$1,770) here in the UK, but due to the US ban on Huawei products, it's not officially on sale in the US.

The P40 Pro is a unique device in the Android world, because while it goes head-to-head in pricing with the premium competitors from other Android makers as well as Apple, it does lack something we've all grown accustomed to, and, dare we say it, take for granted on any Android phone: yes, we're talking about Google services.

There's no getting away from the fact that, right now, Huawei's AppGallery ecosystem isn't where it needs to be, and that will lead to anything but a seamless transfer for phone users from their past device. But the hardware and operating system delivered with the P40 Pro remains truly top rate and, for tech enthusiasts who don't mind doing a little tinkering to get the handset up and running with (most) of the apps they're used to, it is a very well equipped flagship phone.

One final thought, if the Huawei AppGallery had more popular apps (and here’s hoping they come sooner rather than later) or this phone came with GMS support, the Huawei P40 Pro would have been an easy Editor’s Choice. Like some devices, the P40 Pro has gotten better on the software side over the past couple of months and I’m hoping that trend continues.

Once again, we come full circle, with a conclusion written on so many recent Huawei devices that we can all sing it in harmony: The P40 Pro is an impressive device with some class-leading hardware, but we can't recommend it. Without support for Google apps and services, it's nearly unusable in the West, not to mention unavailable for purchase in the US. If Huawei can deliver on its promises of a useful maps app and an actual Play Store alternative, the P40 Pro will become a bit more appealing. But for now, it's largely just a technology showcase.

Fantastic hardware meets challenged software; the P40 Pro is the best camera phone you can get for £899, and the phone’s design is beautiful. Despite some elegant software highlights too, however, the limitations when it comes to Google will likely turn many off. If Huawei can improve this in the phone’s lifetime, then the P40 Pro will be a winner.

The Huawei P40 Pro’s hardware makes it the most polished and capable device the company has ever made, but the software experience cripples the handset. The lack of Google Mobile Services is a major problem for many would-be users, and while the camera, design and battery life are all first-rate, that Google-sized hole in the overall package means it’s a very difficult phone to recommend.

It’s not by accident that a phone tops DxOMark like this has. Huawei has continued their previous pathway of delivering a brilliant camera experience on their top-end phones making this the best camera I have ever used on a mobile phone. Overall the P40 Pro is an excellent phone. The camera is incredible and the general performance is brilliant, plus the P40 Pro just looks the part. But, and it’s a huge but, it is significantly handicapped without Google services and that ultimately makes the phone a hard sell to consumers. It’s a massive shame because this phone is brilliant (as I keep saying) and while Huawei has done a lot of work on its own AppGallery, consumers will want to have popular apps such as FaceBook, WhatsApp and Instagram at the ready, not to forget all the Google services. Coupled with the uncertain times the world is facing right now, it’s probably been the worst time to launch a smartphone.

You would have to be a very heavy user to exhaust this battery in a single day though. I’m genuinely impressed at what Huawei has delivered, it’s going to be an all-day battery for the vast majority of users. I can only recommend the Huawei P40 Pro only if you know exactly what you’re getting into. For me personally, there are many apps that I am using on a daily basis which is not available on Huawei App Gallery. And I use my phone to do a lot of work – so I need those apps.

The Huawei P40 Pro has a lot of drool-worthy upgrades including 5G connection, big camera sensors, and high-performance numbers. As a successor to the Huawei P30 Pro, we expect a lot from the P40 Pro and we will be looking into all of that in this video review.

Personally, I'd still use my Google-capable Android OS smartphone (such as users of the P30 Pro) until it properly conks out before I get the P40 Pro. But if that phone died tomorrow (touch wood), the P40 Pro would definitely be up for consideration because of all its plus points - great camera, good battery uptime, and a nice screen. Granted I might be missing out on some of the contactless payment options, it won't be long before Huawei gets around to that.

I would say that the HUAWEI P40 Pro is an impressive flagship from HUAWEI. Instead of just trying to sell mere numbers like most Chinese phone makers do, the HUAWEI P40 Pro actually makes an effort to sell you an experience. The 90 Hz Quad-Curve Overflow Display makes the HUAWEI P40 Pro wonderfully smooth both physically and visually, and the cameras generally offer an exceptionally easy-to-use experience with shots turning out great without any effort from the user. On the software front you get EMUI 10.1 which isn’t as remarkable as its hardware, you get quite a lot of features baked in like HUAWEI Share, EMUI Desktop and also MeeTime, setting it apart from your average flagship device.

If you’re heavily invested in the Google side of the Android world, the first impression would suggest that the P40 Pro just isn’t the right phone for you. But if you’re savvy enough to plan around that or migration to alternate apps, there is so much to like with this phone. The ability to get important apps through alternate pathways is so important to the success of this phone in our market, I’m not sure I can express in words just how important it is.

Huawei always seems to raise the bar when it comes to smartphone photography every year with the release of its new P-series flagship, and this year is no exception. While the P40 Pro isn’t as revolutionary as say, the P30, the refinements in the tech from the display, the camera and the processor make it stand out against its peers as of press time.

A superb follow-up to one of 2019's best smartphones. The Huawei P40 Pro improves in every area, offering top-tier performance and networking, superb battery life and fast charging, a stupendous camera setup on both the front and back, plus that eye-catching 90Hz 'Overflow' display. Despite how capable this phone is, however, the absence of Google Mobile Services makes this a poor recommendation for anyone other than die-hard Huawei fans and the tech-savvy. Those just looking for a great flagship phone, will probably prefer the ease of hopping onto one of the new Galaxy S20 series or Oppo's Find X2 Pro.

Don’t get us wrong — the P40 Pro is a pretty attractive device. Very nice design, impressive performance, impressive camera and good battery life. It’s just overshadowed by the P40 Pro+ with that penta-camera setup. Nonetheless, if you can’t wait any longer, we do recommend the P40 Pro.

The P40 Pro is an amazing device with an amazing camera. I do hope that a software update fixes some of the nighttime issues I had with the 5x zoom lens, but as it stands, this feels like mostly an incremental update from the P30 Pro. If you've got a P20 Pro, you should totally buy the P40 Pro. If you've already got a P30 Pro, you're probably good unless you go all out on the P40 Pro+.

We are used to seeing the top score in the DXOMARK Camera ranking creep up in one-point increments, with each new champion offering only marginal improvements over the previous number one. Things are different this time, though. The Huawei P40 Pro takes the top spot with a big bang, putting a four-point difference between itself and the previous joint leaders, the Oppo Find X2 Pro and the Xiaomi Mi 10 Pro.

These software features are presently available out-of-the-box when you purchase a Huawei P40, Huawei P40 Pro, or Huawei P40 Pro+ smartphone. They are a part of the EMUI 10.1 software update, so older Huawei phone models such as the P30 or Mate 30 might have the opportunity to use it after updating their devices. However, Huawei is unable to confirm if older models are fully compatible with AI Remove Passerby or AI Remove Reflection.

The Huawei P40 Pro is the right kind of a flagship – it offers cutting-edge tech across the board. The OLED screen is both high-resolution and with a high refresh rate, the performance is brilliant and yet won’t suffer from throttling from heating, and then the battery is relatively large and very fast to recharge.

It’s been a year now since Huawei had launched its successful P30 series smartphones, and a lot has happened since then. Following a trade-war between the United States and China, Huawei ended up being sanctioned, with the most notable effect being that the company no longer has access to Google’s services. Last autumn, we saw the launch of the Mate 30 series, the company’s first flagship phone to ship without GMS. We had argued that those phones lacked sufficient hardware differentiation to be able to make up for the lack of Google’s services, and it would be some time before we would see Huawei’s own HMS (Huawei Mobile Services) mature to a state that represents it being a valid every-day alternative. That goal is inching ever closer as Huawei spends large resources and efforts to get developers onboard its own ecosystem.

A true flagship in so many areas, except one: the lack of Google Services hampers the downloading, sign-in and operation of certain apps. That's a hindrance for many western users, although using Phone Clone you can use the P40 largely unimpinged. It's a shame to see the camera king struck down by the Google sting - but that's how things are right now, at launch.

The Huawei P40 Pro is looking to deliver a superb mobile photography experience. With four lenses and a dash of AI, the P40 Pro is capable of taking stunning daytime and low-light photos. It's also a good looking handset, with curved glass on all four sides and a premium finish. It's just a shame that it's not equipped with Google Mobile Services, which will limit its appeal.

The Huawei P40 belongs to the first generation of Huawei's P series smartphones without Google services. The P40's camera takes very sharp pictures and the high-end smartphone looks very promising in general.

The Huawei P40's hardware is as great as the last few generations of the company's flagship phones, but there are limitations. You don't get wireless charging or a high refresh rate screen by opting for the P40, which a lot of other phones around this price offer. The biggest restriction continues to be the lack of Google Mobile Services that hampers this device as you don't have access to some of the most popular Android applications and services.

The P40 achieves a Video score of 98, thanks to generally accurate exposure indoors and out. Detail is high and noise is well controlled in bright light, though dynamic range is quite limited. The P40 has some issues with color in its videos, with our testers noticing problematic casts and color rendering in some scenes. Stabilization is not particularly effective, with a fair amount of residual motion visible in videos, along with some jello effect. In very low light, noise becomes intrusive, and white balance and autofocus can be inconsistent.

The Huawei P40 accompanied me for a full two months of working from home. Being the primary driver of my day to day work and playing multiple roles, such as the main communicator, camera and entertainment provider, the Huawei P40 fitted seamlessly into my daily life. I had a wonderful experience with the P40, but I must say that it takes time to get used to working without Google Play Services. But once you are over it and used to the new workflow, the Huawei P40 really shines.

The Huawei P40 undercuts the Galaxy S20, despite its higher resolution main camera, and the fact it has more front cameras. But it also loses out on some of the S20-series’ highlights, including wireless charging and a high refresh rate screen. With Huawei still ironing out its Google-free offering, exactly who the P40 appeals to in the west is yet to be seen. But there’s every chance that it could be the best smartphone camera at its price.

Today, most flagship mobile phones are competing for large size and large screens. And there are not many such flagships with one hand. For users who like to hold with one hand, care about lightness and thinness. Pay attention to face value, and like to take pictures. The Huawei P40 with precise positioning and precise pricing is worth experiencing.

Last but not least is the front camera that is just as capable of delivering great pictures. All of the Huawei P40 series devices come with a 32MP front camera and an IR Depth Camera. Moreover, the P40 Pro even has a proximity sensor and an ambient sensor. The 32MP front shooter is far from simple however, as it supports autofocus and 4K video recording too. If that's not quite enough, you can even get some excellent Bokeh shots thanks to the IR Depth Camera.

It's been 3 weeks and counting in this Movement Control Order, and we have been seeing a lot of creative entertainment stuff online. At the same time, we also saw the online launch of the Huawei P40 series in Malaysia which got many Huawei fans excited. As today will be the last day of the pre-order, this is your last chance to own the latest best camera-centric smartphone and pre-order benefits to date.

At the very end of this review we are somewhat conflicted. The P40 is a great smartphone, but as we went along its tiny imperfections piled up until they became one too many. And at the end of the day - €800 is a price too high to pay for this phone.

The Huawei P40 is a lovely, fun little thing, and a charming addition to the line. As with all Huawei phones, it’ll be hampered from an app stability point of view until the brand can completely respond to the catastrophic hand it’s been dealt by the US China trade woes.

The P40 is a great bit of the kit that, although missing out on some of the high-end features of the Pro and Pro+ variants, can still take on most 2020 flagships in terms of photography and raw performance. Whether that makes up for the lack of Google Play is another story altogether, but that'll depend on just how tech-savvy you are.

To be fair, there are periscope zoom equipped Google Android flagship phones like the excellent Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra 5G and the original OPPO 10x lossless Zoom that really work well. The enhanced perisdcope zoom is part of its new 2020 offerings like the Find X2 5G as well.

Overall these phones are pretty much what I'd expect from Huawei -- potentially awesome camera skills, attractive design, 5G, the latest processors and no Google. But how it all comes together in the real world remains to be seen when I put the phones to the test.

That being said, Huawei's HMS efforts are nothing short of impressive and are starting to show great promise. And, despite being a far less universally applicable statement around these parts, there really is a whole vibrant world of Android beyond Google's infrastructure and services. Keeping that in mind, we are sure that the P40 will find popularity in Europe, even if with a limited and specific crowd of buyers.

That said, it’s laying the right foundation - and making hardware that still makes us coo with delight. So if the price is right and the fact it’s Google-light doesn’t put you off, the vanilla P40 could be just the ticket.

The Huawei P40 - on first impressions - seems like a perfectly good piece of hardware. The camera system looks really promising, and the general performance should be really good, but it is placed in an awkward position by a number of factors.

The Huawei P40 Pro Plus is the flagship model of the P40 series. Our high expectations were not just met by the 1399-Euro (~$1599) price tag. The smartphone will likely appeal to photography enthusiasts in particular, since they receive an improved camera setup with 100x digital zoom on top of the P40 Pro's camera features, which are already excellent.

From a hardware point of view, the Huawei P40 Pro Plus is probably one of the best smartphones available today. But the sad thing is, that’s not the end of the story. If you’re well and truly baked into Google’s Android services, it might not be possible to give them up - even for a phone with such an amazing specs sheet. Yes, the camera is nothing short of spectacular. So much so that, after just a few minutes paying around with it, you’re likely to be put in two minds as to whether you really do need Google’s apps that much. That’s going to be your main quandary here if you’re in the market for a new smartphone. But what you need to ask yourself is: are the Google apps that you’re already very dependent on worth giving up for the best smartphone camera you can get your hands on right now? We’ll leave that to you, but with an RRP of £1,299, it’s a risky decision to make.

I realize that Huawei’s hands are tied on the software front, but it’s difficult to recommend the P40 Pro+ to most people as it stands right now. Yes, these are the best shooters I’ve ever used on a phone, but without GMS, the P40 Pro+ just feels incomplete — especially for $1350. And with Samsung’s Galaxy S21 Ultra now offering a similar camera system alongside GMS support, The P40 Pro+ becomes an even harder sell.

In the meantime, information about the Huawei Mate 40 Pro has begun to emerge. The phone is looking to be pretty powerful on its own, but Huawei is also reportedly making a foldable device that closely resembles the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2. A lot has transpired between Huawei and the United States since the original ban, but we’re excited to see what Huawei has created regardless.

Let's start with the bad. As far as the general experience went, my only issue was some wireless charging issues. The broader issue, of course, is outside of Huawei's control. You need to be sure that you'll be OK without Google services. For example, if you're an Uber driver for a living, you really need something with Google Maps. For me, I'm completely OK using the P40 Pro+.

Huawei’s P40 Pro+ would have been one best phones of 2020, and would have been a seriously contender for phone of the year. But without Google Software it’s hard to evaluate it on the same level as other devices until (unless) the Huawei App Gallery is completely matured, for the western market.

With all that said, we'd also like to reiterate that the P40 Pro+ clearly meets the mark as a premium flagship device, which is further bolstered by the tremendous effort Huawei put into developing HMS and AppGallery. It's really shaping up properly with visible thoughtfulness and consideration. There truly is a plethora of local-specific apps in Huawei's app store for all your core daily living needs, and it's still growing even as we publish this review. I could also sideload my preferred Android gaming and messaging apps, and it's easier now with the inclusion of Petal Search. Pair it with the excellent camera package, strong performance and massive storage capacity, and the Huawei P40 Pro+ can still be a premium flagship winner in your eyes.

If you’re picking the P40 Pro Plus up, it’ll be for that camera, and specifically, the 10x zoom, 240mm equivalent telephoto lens. Virtually everything else about it is almost identical to the significantly cheaper P40 Pro - from the great design, screen, and main camera, through to the software limitations that result from no Google services. If you’re a Huawei fan and you aren’t swimming in cash, definitely get the P40 Pro. That said, the Pro Plus is the new best-in-class smartphone camera to beat.

While its significantly more expensive than the regular P40 Pro, it is the pinnacle of smartphone photography thanks to its 10x optical zoom camera, the first in the world. Next year, other big names in Android, like Samsung and Oppo, are sure to develop their own versions of optical 10X zoom in a phone. The P40 Pro Plus is a beautiful, premium phone with the best smartphone camera system money can buy, but it’s far from perfect. No Google means daily software stumbling blocks, even with Huawei’s handy new Petal Search. This makes it tough to justify with such a high asking price in the Western market. At the end of this review we find ourselves liking the Huawei P40 Pro+ a lot. And it is not because of one feature, but for the whole package. Its ceramic design is something easily likable for the added sturdiness and premium touch, the OLED screen is great, and the camera has so much to offer that we keep discovering new modes or ideas for photoshoots every day. And they usually are saved at top quality. Our point is, the P40 Pro+ will not disappoint, you just need to be ready to let go of Google.

Overall, the P40 Pro+ is an excellent flagship device that is ahead of its time in several key areas but the record-breaking hardware comes with a hefty price tag of way more than a grand, and you have to jump through hoops to make some apps and services work. Still, where Huawei goes plenty of its competitors follow, so we hope that the P40 Pro+ trailblazer will initiate a space war that can only benefit the end user.

As with almost any new Huawei phone, the lack of Google Play Services makes it incredibly difficult to recommend. Smartphones are portals to apps and services more than anything. With that access restricted, it makes the experience of using a Huawei device incredibly frustrating. Even if you don’t use Google apps very often, the Google Play store is the best way to get most popular apps you would normally use. Until AppGallery can match the Google Play Store in selection, you’re going to be missing some of the core experiences offered to most other Android phones.

Over the past few years, Huawei has kind of stepped into Nokia’s old spot in the smartphone photography space, by recruiting some of the imaging pioneers from Nokia … by partnering with famed photography brand Leica … and by applying good old-fashioned R&D to produce some stunning phone cameras. The Huawei P40 Pro Plus is the latest evolution of that legacy – so I took it on a road trip from Brooklyn to the boonies … and along the way, this collection of cameras captured my heart. But unless you’re a phone-tweaking geek like me, you’ll probably find that no optical achievement is worth the compromises this phone carries. To see why, join me for MrMobile's Huawei P40 Pro Plus camera review!
