Reviews for the Microsoft Surface Laptop 4 15 AMD TFF_00028
Microsoft presents the 4th generation of the Surface laptop, again offering the larger 15-inch model also with a special AMD Ryzen processor besides the Intel CPUs. Otherwise nothing much has changed, and Microsoft continues to forgo modern connections such as Thunderbolt.

The AMD-powered 15-inch Surface Laptop 4 is a potent ultraportable for the productivity-minded, offering good performance and battery life in a slim, bloatware-free package. The 3:2 display ratio really shines on the 15-inch screen, making it great for working through documents and browsing the web. It's a strong contender for one of the best laptops you can buy if you need to get work done, especially when you factor in the great sound quality, respectable battery life, and decent game performance. Of course, there's still plenty of room for improvement. I'd love to see a Surface Laptop with thinner bezels, a more diverse selection of ports, and a better webcam. It would have been great to see Microsoft figure out a way to include the latest Ryzen 5000-series mobile CPUs, too. Still, the 15-inch Surface Laptop 4’s spacious screen, subtle design, and solid combination of performance and longevity ensure it will serve you well while you're working at home or on the go.

All in all, the Surface Laptop 4 is a decent device for work purposes. It has a large screen despite being lightweight, and Microsoft has pre-installed some programs inside. This includes Microsoft Office and Microsoft Teams, which many people use for their work. In terms of performance, it's certainly more than capable of handling any office work. If we could improve the Surface Laptop 4, we would add more I/O ports and perhaps shrink the bezels around the display a bit more. While the battery test didn't meet our expectations, the laptop can easily last longer if you don't stream YouTube Music as much as we did. But what do you think?

But getting back to the Microsoft Surface Laptop 4, I still really liked it, though there’s no way I’m buying it for myself. Even with the nitpicks about its design from last year, and last-gen processor, anyone looking for a 15-inch laptop without the need for a graphics card will find the Microsoft Surface Laptop 4 among the best that they can get out there if they can afford it. It’s just not clearly the best in 2021, the way it would have been if this was 2020.

Personally though, I want to see what that custom CPU in the Surface Laptop 4 can do. Perhaps more crucially, I also want to see how much heat that custom CPU puts out. So far after a quick mess about I haven’t seen any issues whatsoever, but rest assured it’ll be put through its paces in the full review.

Ultimately, the Surface Laptop 4 feels like a missed opportunity. I have no qualms with Microsoft leaving most of the notebook unchanged but their decision to use last year’s AMD processors is puzzling. And even if you take into account the model that uses Intel’s latest Tiger Lake processor, Microsoft’s refusal to update the USB-C port with Thunderbolt support makes it the only S$2,000 ultraportable notebook that I know of that only comes with a standard USB-C port. There’s no shortage of smaller more compact notebooks that are just as, if not faster. And if you really need a notebook with a larger display, LG’s gram 16 looks like the better option. It weighs a lot less, has a slightly larger display, better ports (with Thunderbolt support), and it even costs less. Back to the drawing board, Microsoft.

So, where does that leave the Surface Laptop 4? It’s a great laptop and a solid option for anyone wanting a high-end, premium experience. If great build quality is important to you, you’ll love the Surface Laptop 4. Value hunters seeking to get the most performance for their dollar may be better off looking for a cheaper option from another manufacturer.

If you want a 15-inch laptop for the extra screen real estate it affords, and don't have big plans—you're not editing video or gaming—the Surface Laptop 4 is a solid choice. For most, the base $1,299 version with the Ryzen 7, 8 gigabytes of RAM, and 256-GB SSD is more than enough for watching Netflix, editing documents, and browsing the web. What sets it apart from similarly priced, and certainly cheaper, laptops is the build quality.

Toss in some wonky USB-C and touchscreen behavior I experienced -- they both stopped working until a random reboot fairy sprinkled some magic dust on them -- and it's hard to place the Microsoft Surface Laptop 4 in the top tier of models we've tested over the past couple of years. But you'll probably be perfectly happy with it, especially if your IT department buys it for you.

Microsoft’s Surface Laptop 4 (Ryzen 7) is undoubtedly a solid offering compared to other laptops in this generation. Its design is as good as ever, and while its performance is mixed, it often finishes at the top of the heap. Battery life, has improved, even if you’ll find that Microsoft has sneakily lowered the screen brightness when running on battery power. It remains premium-priced, but you get a lot for the money.

You could look at the Surface Laptop 4 as a statement by Microsoft. It doesn't need to follow every single trend in the PC market, not when it already has very capable hardware. And when you look at just how solid the Laptop 4 is, I can see why the company made that choice. I'm just hoping that Microsoft is a bit less conservative with the next model. Sometimes, it’s okay to show off a bit.

Microsoft has played it safe with the Surface Laptop, but when it feels this good, maybe that's okay? While there are plenty of models from Dell, Asus, and HP that are flashier or more inventive, the Surface Laptop remains a solid performing, well-made device. With the option of either AMD Ryzen 4000-series chips, or new 11th gen Intel CPUs, it's a decent performer, and is paired with a great keyboard and screen. The XPS 13 and 15 are the closest competition, and if you're ambivalent about Windows, and new M1 Macbooks are excellent, but for a solid Windows machine that just works, the Surface Laptop 4 is here for you.

On the other hand, even if the larger MacBook Pro is spectacular, there are some advantages the Laptop 4 will certainly retain (it runs Windows, and it’s built like a Surface Laptop) and some it will probably retain (it’ll likely be lighter than the MacBook Pro 16). And, of course, plenty of people need a laptop right now. In today’s market, among today’s 15-inch laptops, the Surface Laptop 4 is a pretty damn good buy. Microsoft didn’t change much about the outside — but on the inside, it really pulled through.

SEA PC Mag, meanwhile, took the Microsoft Surface Laptop 4 to a series of performance tests. While the laptop shows favorable results, it also becomes evident that it has some performance weaknesses, particularly on encoding files and gaming.

If only Microsoft hadn't stubbornly ignored some of the smaller problems plaguing the Surface Laptop series. There is only one USB Type-C port (without Thunderbolt support), the proprietary Surface Connect input is, well, proprietary, and the display bezels are long overdue for a buzzcut. These, you would think, are the easy things to fix. And yet, I close this largely positive review with the feeling that Microsoft was only a shake and a twist away from making the Surface Laptop 4 the laptop to beat.

While it’s true that these alternatives offer more configuration options, they come with an added expense that’s not necessarily worth it for value-minded users, given the multi-threaded muscle that the Surface Laptop 4 can bring to bear. Neither of these alternatives offers ancillary advantages like a significantly better screen or a vastly more robust port selection, either. So the Surface Laptop 4 earns an Editors’ Choice award as the best general-purpose 15-inch laptop you can buy right now.

For all the buzz Microsoft's Surface tablets get, I've always thought the Surface Laptop was actually Microsoft's secret weapon. Since the Surface Laptop debuted in 2017, it's been a strong contender for the best all-purpose slim Windows laptop.
