Microsoft presents the 4th generation of the Surface laptop, again offering the larger 15-inch model also with a special AMD Ryzen processor besides the Intel CPUs. Otherwise nothing much has changed, and Microsoft continues to forgo modern connections such as Thunderbolt.

The AMD-powered 15-inch Surface Laptop 4 is a potent ultraportable for the productivity-minded, offering good performance and battery life in a slim, bloatware-free package. The 3:2 display ratio really shines on the 15-inch screen, making it great for working through documents and browsing the web. It's a strong contender for one of the best laptops you can buy if you need to get work done, especially when you factor in the great sound quality, respectable battery life, and decent game performance. Of course, there's still plenty of room for improvement. I'd love to see a Surface Laptop with thinner bezels, a more diverse selection of ports, and a better webcam. It would have been great to see Microsoft figure out a way to include the latest Ryzen 5000-series mobile CPUs, too. Still, the 15-inch Surface Laptop 4’s spacious screen, subtle design, and solid combination of performance and longevity ensure it will serve you well while you're working at home or on the go.

All in all, the Surface Laptop 4 is a decent device for work purposes. It has a large screen despite being lightweight, and Microsoft has pre-installed some programs inside. This includes Microsoft Office and Microsoft Teams, which many people use for their work. In terms of performance, it's certainly more than capable of handling any office work. If we could improve the Surface Laptop 4, we would add more I/O ports and perhaps shrink the bezels around the display a bit more. While the battery test didn't meet our expectations, the laptop can easily last longer if you don't stream YouTube Music as much as we did. But what do you think?

But getting back to the Microsoft Surface Laptop 4, I still really liked it, though there’s no way I’m buying it for myself. Even with the nitpicks about its design from last year, and last-gen processor, anyone looking for a 15-inch laptop without the need for a graphics card will find the Microsoft Surface Laptop 4 among the best that they can get out there if they can afford it. It’s just not clearly the best in 2021, the way it would have been if this was 2020.

Personally though, I want to see what that custom CPU in the Surface Laptop 4 can do. Perhaps more crucially, I also want to see how much heat that custom CPU puts out. So far after a quick mess about I haven’t seen any issues whatsoever, but rest assured it’ll be put through its paces in the full review.

Ultimately, the Surface Laptop 4 feels like a missed opportunity. I have no qualms with Microsoft leaving most of the notebook unchanged but their decision to use last year’s AMD processors is puzzling. And even if you take into account the model that uses Intel’s latest Tiger Lake processor, Microsoft’s refusal to update the USB-C port with Thunderbolt support makes it the only S$2,000 ultraportable notebook that I know of that only comes with a standard USB-C port. There’s no shortage of smaller more compact notebooks that are just as, if not faster. And if you really need a notebook with a larger display, LG’s gram 16 looks like the better option. It weighs a lot less, has a slightly larger display, better ports (with Thunderbolt support), and it even costs less. Back to the drawing board, Microsoft.

So, where does that leave the Surface Laptop 4? It’s a great laptop and a solid option for anyone wanting a high-end, premium experience. If great build quality is important to you, you’ll love the Surface Laptop 4. Value hunters seeking to get the most performance for their dollar may be better off looking for a cheaper option from another manufacturer.

If you want a 15-inch laptop for the extra screen real estate it affords, and don't have big plans—you're not editing video or gaming—the Surface Laptop 4 is a solid choice. For most, the base $1,299 version with the Ryzen 7, 8 gigabytes of RAM, and 256-GB SSD is more than enough for watching Netflix, editing documents, and browsing the web. What sets it apart from similarly priced, and certainly cheaper, laptops is the build quality.

Toss in some wonky USB-C and touchscreen behavior I experienced -- they both stopped working until a random reboot fairy sprinkled some magic dust on them -- and it's hard to place the Microsoft Surface Laptop 4 in the top tier of models we've tested over the past couple of years. But you'll probably be perfectly happy with it, especially if your IT department buys it for you.

Microsoft’s Surface Laptop 4 (Ryzen 7) is undoubtedly a solid offering compared to other laptops in this generation. Its design is as good as ever, and while its performance is mixed, it often finishes at the top of the heap. Battery life, has improved, even if you’ll find that Microsoft has sneakily lowered the screen brightness when running on battery power. It remains premium-priced, but you get a lot for the money.

You could look at the Surface Laptop 4 as a statement by Microsoft. It doesn't need to follow every single trend in the PC market, not when it already has very capable hardware. And when you look at just how solid the Laptop 4 is, I can see why the company made that choice. I'm just hoping that Microsoft is a bit less conservative with the next model. Sometimes, it’s okay to show off a bit.

Microsoft has played it safe with the Surface Laptop, but when it feels this good, maybe that's okay? While there are plenty of models from Dell, Asus, and HP that are flashier or more inventive, the Surface Laptop remains a solid performing, well-made device. With the option of either AMD Ryzen 4000-series chips, or new 11th gen Intel CPUs, it's a decent performer, and is paired with a great keyboard and screen. The XPS 13 and 15 are the closest competition, and if you're ambivalent about Windows, and new M1 Macbooks are excellent, but for a solid Windows machine that just works, the Surface Laptop 4 is here for you.

On the other hand, even if the larger MacBook Pro is spectacular, there are some advantages the Laptop 4 will certainly retain (it runs Windows, and it’s built like a Surface Laptop) and some it will probably retain (it’ll likely be lighter than the MacBook Pro 16). And, of course, plenty of people need a laptop right now. In today’s market, among today’s 15-inch laptops, the Surface Laptop 4 is a pretty damn good buy. Microsoft didn’t change much about the outside — but on the inside, it really pulled through.

If only Microsoft hadn't stubbornly ignored some of the smaller problems plaguing the Surface Laptop series. There is only one USB Type-C port (without Thunderbolt support), the proprietary Surface Connect input is, well, proprietary, and the display bezels are long overdue for a buzzcut. These, you would think, are the easy things to fix. And yet, I close this largely positive review with the feeling that Microsoft was only a shake and a twist away from making the Surface Laptop 4 the laptop to beat.

While it’s true that these alternatives offer more configuration options, they come with an added expense that’s not necessarily worth it for value-minded users, given the multi-threaded muscle that the Surface Laptop 4 can bring to bear. Neither of these alternatives offers ancillary advantages like a significantly better screen or a vastly more robust port selection, either. So the Surface Laptop 4 earns an Editors’ Choice award as the best general-purpose 15-inch laptop you can buy right now.

The Surface Laptop 4 improves on the Surface Laptop 3 in many ways, offering Windows fans a bloatware-free ultraportable with premium components packed inside a beautiful, lightweight chassis. While I’d have liked to see Microsoft attempt some more significant changes to the Surface Laptop formula, the excellent speakers, improved battery life, and under-the-hood upgrades make the Surface Laptop 4 one of the best Windows laptops you can buy — and a serious contender for a spot among the best laptops on the market. We already have a laundry list of changes we’d like to see in a sequel (thinner bezels, a better webcam, Thunderbolt 4 support and more ports in general), but the Surface Laptop 4’s tall screen, comfortable keyboard and svelte, sturdy design make it a great choice for anyone looking to get work done around the house or out at the coffee shop.

A refresh of the previous model, the Surface Laptop 4 brings minor improvements to what was already one of the best 13-inch laptops. It's thin, lightweight and powerful, and the battery should easily last you through a day. Better yet, the 13.5-inch PixelSense display is both gorgeous and practical, and the keyboard and touchpad are as good as they get in the ultra-thin class of laptops. As I heap praise upon the Surface Laptop 4, I find myself wanting more. As gorgeous as is it, the thick bezels around the display prevent this laptop from being on the cutting-edge of design. Just look at the XPS 13 or Spectre x360 14 and you'll see what I mean. Even more of a reason to avoid the Surface Laptop 4 are its limited ports; it lacks a Thunderbolt input and requires a proprietary charger. Then there is the price. The $999 starting sounds great in marketing material but you will pay closer to $1,500 for a decent config (we recommend 16GB of RAM). Despite those complaints, I wouldn't hesitate to recommend the Surface Laptop 4.

While Microsoft tends to use its third strike to knock out some homerun products, it feels like the Laptop 3 from 2019 was more of a bunt setting up an infield homerun for the Surface Laptop 4. The Laptop 4's success may not come with the same sort of fanfare and fireworks as a fancy out of the park homerun, it does help advance all runners and counts just as much. The Surface Laptop 4's biggest upgrade in 2021 is its processor and for most, that is more than enough. While most laptops in 2021 come with Intel's 11 Gen and similar or better graphics performance, for the Surface Laptop fan, it's become a significant reason to upgrade from an original Laptop, Laptop 2 or even a Laptop 3 in some instances. Yes, the price per power/performance equation for the Surface Laptop is a bit skewed to the higher end, and there are devices out now that undercut that proposal, but for fans of a bloat free, minimalistic software and hardware experience, the Surface Laptop 4 is hard to beat this year.

The Microsoft Surface Laptop 4 is a well-rounded laptop: it has a long battery life, a fast processor, a sturdy aluminum body, a phenomenal user experience, and a great screen. It does not lead the pack in any of these areas, but it also does not fail anywhere. It consistently meets and exceeds expectations. While it’s definitely pricey, it’s a laptop that will please a wide variety of users. We’re overall impressed with the Microsoft Surface Laptop 4. It didn’t manage to best its greatest rival, the MacBook Air, for performance, battery life, or value, but it gets close. It’s one of the best Windows-based laptops on performance alone, and when you factor in its excellent keyboard, trackpad, screen, and stellar appearance, it’s a phenomenal choice for many users.

Were I in the market for a laptop, and needed Windows 10, I suspect I’d be looking to the Surface Laptop 4. Part of that is the clear consideration to usability: Microsoft has obviously sweated the small stuff around the keyboard, trackpad, and general aesthetic. Trying to encapsulate that somewhat nebulous – but no less important – “feel” of a device is tricky, but there’s generally a pleasantness to using the Surface Laptop 4 that a lot of rival notebooks lack.

So far, the Surface Laptop 4 is what we expected it would be: the Surface Laptop 3, but with new internal components. And that means you should expect a pretty darn good laptop, though one with a thick-bezel design that's starting to show its age. Which is why we're ultra-eager to put the Surface Laptop 4 through its paces with our gamut of performance, display and endurance tests. We will update this Microsoft Surface Laptop 4 review once we have completed testing. If Microsoft's claims are proven true, this may become the standout Surface device of the entire family.

As with the previous generation, the Microsoft Surface Laptop 4 is a very nice ultraportable laptop. It’s slim and light, looks great and the keyboard, touchpad and display are all superb. This is a laptop I’d be happy to own and use as my day-to-day machine for work. The key question is, however, does it do enough to overhaul the best in the business? My answer to that would have to be: not quite. With uninspiring GPU performance and middling battery life denting its appeal, even the switch to AMD and Intel CPUs across the range can’t drag it level with the M1 MacBook Air.

In an aggressive move, Microsoft has launched the Surface Laptop 4 in India with over 10 SKUs which are available on either the 11th Gen Intel Core processors or AMD Ryzen Mobile processors. I got my hands on the model with AMD Ryzen 5 4680U, which comes with 16GB of RAM and 256GB of SSD storage. It costs Rs 122,499 and is a great value proposition for people who are on the move. The battery life is solid on this one, and the display is decent. If you do not want the Surface Laptop 4, you can also look at the Dell XPS 13, which I have reviewed and is a great all-rounder machine. But it is also costly. Another alternative is the MacBook Air, which is available at a price less than that of the Surface Laptop 4.

The Surface Laptop 4 is a laptop that can be summed up in one word: adequate. In terms of raw performance, it has enough performance for just about anything you might want to do, but it isn’t going to be quite as fast as the latest Ryzen 5000 laptops. I guess it does have a lot more going for it in terms of user experience. Stuff like the adaptive brightness, comfortable keyboard, nice trackpad, and the Alcantara palm rest are definitely nice to have too. The long battery life and excellent display on the Surface Laptop 4 are also notable pluses that put the Surface Laptop 4 ahead of most of its peers. I would say that the clean design and Windows installation can be considered bonuses as well, but there are plenty of beautiful machines out there right now.

SEA PC Mag, meanwhile, took the Microsoft Surface Laptop 4 to a series of performance tests. While the laptop shows favorable results, it also becomes evident that it has some performance weaknesses, particularly on encoding files and gaming.

The new Microsoft Surface Laptop 4 (13.5″) is a stylish-looking device that has a premium all-aluminum build, thin profile, and powerful hardware under the bonnet. The first thing that you’re going to notice is the design of this machine and yes, this one looks elegant and modern at the same time. Its stealth-ish design is suitable for all kinds of scenarios – you can use it at home, in the office, and because it’s a lightweight laptop, you can take it with you for a “walk” in the park or when you’re on vacation. The style of the laptop is kind of neutral so there is a big chance to be well-accepted by a lot of people. Unfortunately, the memory is soldered to the motherboard so future upgrades are impossible. The device can be bought with 8GB or 16GB LPDDR4x RAM so pick your configuration carefully – the 16GB variant should be a lot more future-proof. Interestingly enough, according to the CPU-Z reading, the soldered memory works in quad-channel mode. For such an expensive machine, the Microsoft Surface Laptop 4 (13.5″) has a very basic I/O – just one USB Type-A and one USB Type-C, that’s all.

The Surface Laptop 4 is another superb laptop from Microsoft. The drawbacks are very minor, and the list of plus points is a lengthy one. Give this a serious look if you want a stylish Windows laptop that can go just about anywhere and do almost anything.

The Microsoft Surface Laptop 4 is a good laptop, but it feels generic compared to its rivals with a processor upgrade its only real upgrade over the Surface Laptop 3. It looks outdated with its chunky bezel and lacks a fingerprint reader. Despite these shortcomings it still offers reasonable value at this price.

The Microsoft Surface Laptop 4 is an exceptionally nice laptop. That word may be banned by English teachers across the land, but "ooh that's nice" is what you'll feel like saying when you feel and use this product. Its aluminium casing is plain lovely, the keyboard is great for fast long-form typing in our opinion, and the touchpad is superb. While the screen's colour and contrast are not quite next-level, the reasonably high brightness and resolution are what most people will actually notice.

It might be more of a refresh than an all-new model, but the Surface Laptop 4 remains one of the most well-rounded Windows notebooks out there. The 3:2 screen, comfy keyboard and unique alcantara finish are well-suited to all kinds of work tasks, and boosts to performance and battery life means it can tackle heavier workloads, or an entire work day away from the mains - with some juice left over to wind down with a Netflix binge afterwards. We'd still like to see those screen bezels trimmed a bit, and the top-spec options are eye-wateringly pricey - but the mainstream version seen here can happily go toe-to-toe with a MacBook air for premium looks and do-anything potential.

Microsoft's Surface Laptop 4 is a powerful, capable portable PC and while you'll pay a little more for one than you might pay for a no-name $400 special at your local office retailer, you get a PC that you can rely on for literally years to come. A lack of USB ports is frustrating, but nothing you can't solve with a cheap and cheerful dock or extender in your laptop bag.

Microsoft's new Surface Laptop 4 is clearly an iterative update over its 2-year-old forerunner, but the improvements in performance, battery life, and feature set make for a comfortable and recommendable laptop for the vast majority of people.

The 15-inch Surface Laptop 4 is for those who wish to get a slick notebook that offers the perfect good screen size and portability, looks and sounds good and the battery life is incredible for a device with a display of this size and type. Yes, the Surface Laptop 4 is very expensive, and it goes without saying that the notebook will be better suited for business users, especially executives who want an aspirational computing machine that is not only beautiful to look at but also super capable and functional.
