There’s no doubt that the Surface Laptop Studio is a bold piece of laptop design and its hinged display makes a certain degree of sense, especially for people who spend a lot of their time sketching, inking and editing photos using a stylus. And, for users who love their Microsoft Surface Pro 8 but need something with a bit more oomph, the Laptop Studio makes a compelling argument for itself. For everyone else, the picture isn’t quite so clear, however, with the underpowered 11th Gen CPUs, mediocre battery life and SSD performance, plus some rather strange design decisions undermining the laptop’s general appeal. In the final analysis, unless you’re in the small group that desperately needs to work with a stylus on a daily basis, you’re probably best off giving the Microsoft Surface Laptop Studio a wide berth. It simply has one too many shortcomings to be worthy of a recommendation.

The Surface Laptop Studio follows in the footsteps of the Surface Book lineup, and brings about one of the most compelling laptops in Microsoft's history. Microsoft could have gone for more powerful hardware, but in the end, it probably won't matter too much, as the unique form factor is probably the biggest selling point here.

The Microsoft Surface Laptop Studio is well-built and reasonably powerful, with a nice bright screen, great speakers, and a battery good enough to see you through a day at work. But if that’s all you care about, you would probably be better off investing in a cheaper, more powerful Windows laptop like the Dell XPS 15 OLED or the Asus Zenbook 13 OLED, which can’t match the Studio’s sound quality but make up for it with but gorgeous OLED screens. If you’re in the market for an ultraportable Windows laptop that doubles as a decent creative tool for digital artists, the Surface Laptop Studio paired with a Surface Slim Pen 2 is a powerful contender for one of the best laptops you can buy right now. The haptic feedback is cool, the sliding screen affords you a more easel-like angle for working, and the Surface Laptop Studio has the power and longevity to be a great laptop for school or work.

Obviously, one thing I couldn’t test in my brief time with the Surface Laptop Studio is performance. I’m really excited about the new 35W processor and the new GPU, so that should be pretty interesting. Personally, I’m really excited about the product as a whole. I’m excited it fixed all of the things I didn’t like about the Surface Book, and I’m really excited about the new Slim Pen 2.

The conversation surrounding the SLS has typically devolved into how it under performs due to its integration of the RTX 3050 Ti GPU, and in head-to-head comparisons, it does get roundly trounced, but few reviews detail the types of workloads, lifestyle use cases the SLS excels at or acknowledge the shortcomings of using a beefier GPU on competitive alternatives. As I said up top, the SLS is a keenly crafted set of intentional compromises that work in the favor of someone in the Microsoft ecosystem, specifically used to using Surface devices. The SLS also has the added bonus of being a viable tool for first time graphic designers, long time graphics designers who are looking to consolidate hardware or anyone who can make use of a digital pen or stylus. The SLS can also serve as a mini theater for kids when on the road and hotel TV just isn't cutting it. Beyond all of that, the SLS offers enough power to be good enough to forget the specs and speed comparisons in everyday use.

It’s easy to dismiss the Microsoft Surface Laptop Studio as nothing more than a gimmick in a pretty chassis, but the device is much more than just specifications. This is Microsoft’s new flagship laptop that is aimed at a very niche sector of an already saturated market. The Surface Laptop Studio isn’t made for the everyday person, but more so for someone that has a focus on creativity-based tasks. If you’re a digital artist and you want the best of a laptop and a drawing canvas, this is a laptop designed for you. For most other people, however, the Microsoft Surface Laptop Studio’s design isn’t going to be enough to justify purchasing this laptop over the countless others that offer better performance, battery life, and portability. For $2,100, Microsoft only refined a design that already existed before, and while it truly made a beautiful laptop, you’re better off sticking to something more traditional.

If you're hoping to buy the Surface Laptop Studio, then do it. From the display to the overall performance of the dGPU, it's one excellent machine. Sure, you can find a laptop that's better-performing for the same price, but not many laptops with a dGPU offer up the different modes of use and inking support that the Laptop Studio has. For fans of Microsoft, the Laptop Studio is excellent. It takes everything learned from Surface Pro, Surface Laptop, and Surface Book, and puts it all together in one fantastic product.

And of course, those looking to get the most bang for their buck can grab cheaper options from other PC manufacturers. Sure, you’ll lose out on the premium build quality of a Microsoft device, but if you’re looking to get as much performance as possible for the lowest price, build quality is something I’d happily trade. All that said, the Surface Laptop Studio is an excellent, premium Windows PC. Unless that’s what you need (or want), there are probably better ways to spend your money.

I learned something about myself this week – and tell me if you think it applies to you as well. When it comes to my tech, I like devices that change state. A wearable camera whose remote turns into a tripod (Insta360 Go2); a drone that collapses to be carried (DJI Mavic Air); a phone that converts into a tablet, or a pocket square (Samsung Galaxy Fold / Flip). To me, tech is at its most exciting when it can physically change based on my needs at the time. Microsoft is no stranger to that approach, having kicked out three generations of its Surface Book over the past half decade or so – and I’ve just spent a week with the convertible that replaces it. On today’s MrMobile video, Michael Fisher reviews the Surface Laptop Studio, a Windows 11 PC that can transform into your digital drafting table … or a top-notch YouTube tablet ... when it’s not busy bring a (pretty pricey) conventional laptop.

MICROSOFT'S SURFACE LAPTOP Studio is a laptop that's also a media center and tablet, all rolled into one. It's designed to be your workstation, video gaming center, Netflix screen, and sketching slate. That's a tall order, and tackling too many use cases is often a recipe for succeeding at none of them. But the Surface Laptop Studio surprises. It's not perfect, but it's pretty good at all of those tasks. It's a shame the operating system it runs keeps it from excelling.

A new design from Microsoft in the Surface line for 2021! The Surface Laptop Studio effectively replaces the Surface Book line as MS’ convertible laptop line for creatives. It has a 14.4” IPS 120Hz pull-forward display design that’s uncommon but not unique. The design makes it easy to switch from laptop to tablet and tent modes. It runs Windows 11 Home on 35 watt Intel quad core i5 and i7 CPUs, putting it in between an Ultrabook and mobile workstation or gaming laptop in terms of performance. The Core i7 has NVIDIA RTX 3050 Ti dedicated graphics. The laptop is available with 16/32GB RAM, up to a 2TB SSD and has Thunderbolt 4. It’s compatible with the new Surface Slim Pen 2 (sold separately) and the pen magnetically attaches to the laptop and charges. The pen has haptics for a more pen on paper feel, and it has a haptic Precision trackpad.

The Laptop Studio is perhaps the most appealing computer for them, then. Its list of compromises is much shorter — really, it’s the high sticker price and poor battery life and not much else — and it’s an enjoyable computer to use, even if you never draw a single digital brushstroke. Still, even if you’re Microsoft’s ideal customer, you need to give up a lot of money and battery life to get this screen with all its flexibility. But if you’re willing to be flexible yourself, and don’t really need a screen that moves in unique ways, the Dell XPS 15 is a lovely computer that costs a bit less while providing a bit more power.

The Surface Laptop Studio is ambitious new Microsoft device that features a fully adjustable touch screen. What you lose compared to the earlier surface book, namely the ability to entirely detach the screen, you gain in battery life, performance, and ease of use. You can still pull the screen forward for an angled surface, or fold it flat to use as a drawing pad. The new Surface Pen 2 is also great, featuring haptic feedback as you write, though it's unfortunately $130.

What I referred to once as the Surface Laptop Book Studio around the office still feels true. This is the niche product that, counter-intuitively, tries to do it all. Microsoft has never shied away from asking for a premium price where Surfaces are concerned, however, and so you'll pay a little more versus another notebook. If you're okay with not actually detaching the tablet, the Surface Laptop Studio does everything else that the Surface Book 3 does, functionally and arguably more elegantly. Pull-forward two-in-ones feel like they might end up dominating the category in a few years. Overall, the Surface Laptop Studio is a good laptop—if you're thinking of it as a laptop, that is. It's much more than the sum of its parts, offering a superior content-creation and content-consuming experience, plus some light gaming capabilities. It has some bugs to work out; new hardware plus a new operating system plus new firmware inevitably generates glitches. And again, you'll also have to decide whether this arguably niche device is worth the investment

The Surface Laptop Studio is the sort of gadget I would love to own but find it hard to justify the cost. At least, for my own needs. I wouldn't benefit from the clever hinge as much as an artist, designer, engineer, or anyone who prefers using a stylus or touch inputs over a touchpad. That said, anyone whose work or play could benefit from the flexibility of the Laptop Studio's unique design should strongly consider this laptop — the hinge really is a game-changer and rare on laptops in this class. Overall, the Surface Laptop Studio is an excellent laptop with a unique design that makes it purpose-built for creative pros who want something more out of their gadgets.

Packed with innovative features, Microsoft's Surface Laptop Studio presages a new breed of laptop for creative pros who are pen-input devotees. One big quibble: Performance isn’t nearly class-leading. Perhaps you’re a software developer by day and a gamer by night. Or maybe you game and code simultaneously by night, and by day you’re asleep. In either case, your laptop of choice might have once been a Razer or an Alienware, but now there’s a new kid on the block: the 14-inch Microsoft Surface Laptop Studio (starts at $1,599; $2,699 as tested). It advances the state of the art of mobile computing for creative pros in a big way, with a haptic touchpad and a 120Hz screen that pulls forward so you can lay it completely flat on top of the keyboard. It’s not particularly powerful, and it's pricey, but it's still impressive.

The Surface Laptop Studio has everything going for it. The design is striking. The functionality is fantastic. The performance is excellent. Even the battery life is superb. Can there even be a downside? Yes of course there is, and it is the price. The Surface Book was a very expensive computer, so it should be no surprise that the replacement is also very expensive. Starting at $1599.99 USD for the Core i5 / 16 GB / 256 GB model and topping out at $3099.00 for a Core i7 / RTX / 32 GB / 2 TB model, the Surface Laptop Studio is most definitely expensive. Whether or not it is worth it is always a personal or business decision. Microsoft has delivered a worthy successor to the Surface Book which integrates wonderfully with Windows 11. Do you need it? Likely not. Do you want it? Likely yes.

Here’s the thing: I genuinely like using the Surface Laptop Studio. Its flexible screen is far less frustrating than the Surface Book’s, it has an excellent keyboard and it’s powerful enough to play a few games. But I can’t help but want more, especially after seeing how much the Surface Book line struggled since its inception. With a starting price of $1,600, the Surface Laptop Studio directly competes with Dell’s XPS 15, the MacBook Pro 16-inch, and the Razer Blade. You’d have to shell out at least $2,100 to get the NVIDIA GPU, which puts it up against far more powerful gaming laptops. So here’s the question: How much is a tilting screen worth to you? If it’s more important than having the best CPU and GPU power around, the Surface Laptop Studio will suit you well. But if you want genuine power for a similar price, just get the Razer Blade 14 already.

This Surface Laptop Studio is the best Windows laptop I’ve used so far. It makes Windows 11 feel like the natural next step in the evolution of this PC experience. It makes the odd idea of a double-hinge laptop display seem obvious and entirely realistic. It’s not afraid to have a design that’s significantly thicker than similar devices that’ve come before it. If I wanted to buy a laptop that covered all the different sorts of work and creative endeavors I participate in today, this would be the ideal laptop for me. If you’re looking for the key device to make the most of everything Windows 11 has to offer at launch, this is also likely the best laptop for you. The version of the Microsoft Surface Laptop Studio we have for review here has an Intel Core i7, 32GB RAM, and 1TB SSD. This configuration starts at approximately $2,699.99 USD. The Surface Laptop Studio’s base configuration has an Intel Core i5, 16GB RAM, 256GB SSD, and a starting price at around $1,599.99 USD.

The Surface Laptop Studio isn’t perfect — its weakened quad-core processor is a problem. If you’re someone who really needs that performance more than anything, there are more powerful options out there. You have to buy into the overall vision of the product to make the Surface Laptop Studio worth its price. The different 2-in-1 modes, the integration with the Surface Slim Pen 2, the haptic feedback touchpad, and the gorgeous 120Hz screen are all things that make the Surface Laptop Studio unlike any other laptop you can buy right now.

Over the years, Microsoft has been working hard to make excellent hardware products, so that the Windows platform can have more advantages and a better experience when facing MacBook, and Surface Laptop Studio is undoubtedly a highly imaginative product. The addition of the flip-folding screen allows Surface Laptop Studio to freely switch between notebook mode, entertainment mode, and canvas mode to meet a variety of different usage scenarios. With the addition of the RTX 3050 Ti, the performance of the Surface Laptop Studio can be described as reborn. Compared with the previous Surface products with only a nuclear display, the RTX 3050 Ti can provide 300~400% performance. As I waited for someone at a Delhi hotel recently, I saw a gentleman come my way. He sat next to me and curiously asked about the laptop I was using. “It’s a Surface Laptop Studio,” I replied. “Does Microsoft make its own laptops?” He admitted he wasn’t aware of the Surface brand but told me he liked the form factor of the Surface Laptop Studio. “It’s different from my MacBook Pro,” said the man who introduced himself as the owner of an architectural firm. This conversation just reinforced my belief that there will be takers for Microsoft’s experimental Surface Laptop Studio, which blends certain elements of the desktop Surface Studio and the premium 2-in-1 Surface Book. It’s a mobile workstation that’s also a sketching slate and a portable home theatre. I have been using the Surface Laptop Studio for a few days, and I am in love with this device even though it is not perfect. Here is my review.

The Microsoft Surface Laptop Studio is a better two-in-one device compared with peers because of its display hinge mechanism, which is unique and functional. Moreover, it has a pixel-rich display of smooth 120Hz refresh rate, and support for Dolby Vision. From design to display, there are several things the Surface Laptop Studio has going for it. But shortcomings on the performance front do not justify its ‘Studio’ moniker. There are better laptops, including two-in-one types, available in the market.

The Laptop Studio is a compelling new addition to Microsoft’s Surface range, but it doesn’t get everything right. I’m impressed by the functionality available in all three modes, but some will miss the extra flexibility afforded by the Surface Book. However, a slick design makes switching between them feel seamless. It also helps Microsoft pack in more power than the Book 3. While it was announced before 12th-gen Intel laptop chips were official, combining Tiger Lake CPUs with an RTX 3050 Ti GPU yields a nice performance boost. Other highlights include an impressive 120Hz display (with adaptive refresh rate on the way), solid battery life and a great video calling experience. However, a limited port selection and no fingerprint sensor take the shine off the experience. At these prices, these shortcomings are difficult to ignore. But let's hope more companies experiment with form factors like this in the future.

After a slow start, the Microsoft Surface has truly come of age. The Surface Laptop Studio isn’t perfect, though; it’ll be a little underpowered for some professional software, and the top-of-the-range model we tested is expensive (although the entry-level version starts at £1,208 exc VAT). However, it makes the idea of a transforming multi-function device work extremely well. It’s a competent notebook, excellent for watching movies or presenting on the move, and the Studio tablet mode is extremely usable too. If you need a system that can perform creative, pen-based design work as well as being great for everyday office tasks, the Microsoft Surface Laptop Studio can do both well. It’s not so just a jack of all trades, but pretty masterful at all of them too.

The Microsoft Surface Laptop Studio exists in a space inhabited by the likes of the Acer ConceptD and some of Apple’s more specialist gear, where aspects of the design are so carefully targeted, a lot of discussions about price have to be left at the door. Its new hinge system is a little different to what you’ll see elsewhere in the range, but slots into the family perfectly. It has the elegance we’ve come to expect from Microsoft. The screen is great, so is the speaker system, and a quiet cooling system is always to be appreciated. There is a question over how much design pros are going to fall in love with the Microsoft Surface Laptop Studio, though. Its power ceiling isn’t super-high, and unlike a Wacom Cintiq or Surface Studio 2, you can’t secure the screen at an optimal angle for stylus use without a separate laptop stand.

The Surface Laptop Studio flaunts a fantastic design, with its clever hinge removing the need of detaching the screen in order to doodle and sketch on the display. Acer has already launched several laptops with the same design, but Microsoft has added its classic top build quality to make this hybrid machine feel even more premium. However, the lack of high-end options is difficult to forgive in a laptop aimed at content creators. The stingy port options could also prove problematic if you don’t fancy the dongle life, and it’s a real head-scratcher that Microsoft doesn’t bundle in the Slim Pen. Nevertheless, the Surface Laptop Studio will still appeal to those who want a high-performance laptop that can also double as a makeshift graphics tablet for drawing and sketching. Although you’ll really need to make use of that stylus-friendly touchscreen to make it a better option than the MacBook Pro 14.

If you've been using Microsoft's Surface devices, you'll find the Surface Laptop Studio a pleasing upgrade. If you opt for the higher-end Core i7 specification, you'll get a portable discrete-GPU workstation that handles most creator and developer tasks with ease. It might not be cheap, but it can handle everything from machine learning to gaming, and features one of Microsoft's best screens to date, which quickly converts from studio to stage to laptop. Innovative and powerful, the Surface Laptop Studio is a worthy machine, with design chops to compare with the MacBook Pro. Just be ready for all the magnets!

Among 2-in-1s, the MSI Summit E13 Flip offers comparable performance for a much lower price-tag, as will the Dell XPS 9310. For an excellent drawing or note-taking experience, the iPad Pro or iPad Air coupled with a stylus are about as powerful as the Surface Laptop Studio, and they offer better battery life, seamless integration, and cost much less. If the Surface Laptop Studio’s $2,899 model cost $1,899, this would be a tougher call. Its fiercest competitors retail between $1,000 to $1,900, leaving the Surface Laptop Studio stranded above the standard 2-in-1 price range. While the laptop is a bit too bulky for easy portability, it does offer better performance than many Windows 2-in-1s and meets the needs of stylus users. However, we simply can’t recommend it when you can get a similar experience from other significantly cheaper options.

There are a number of similar laptops available, from the tablet Windows Surface Pro 8 to the standard laptop-style Dell XPS 13. The Microsoft Surface Pro 8 is cheaper (although you do have to buy the keyboard and pen separately) and uses a similar processor. It also offers Thunderbolt 4 ports. The clip-on keyboard is much less comfortable to use than the one built into the Surface Laptop Studio, though and you really can’t use it on your lap. The Dell XPS 13 9310 is a more standard laptop than the Surface Laptop Studio and includes a more attractive OLED screen (a 2-in-1 version is also available) . The 13-inch screen on the XPS is smaller than the Surface Laptop Studio, though, and that can be important for those who want to use the touch screen and pen with apps like Photoshop and Illustrator that need lots of screen real estate.
