Reviews for the OnePlus 6
Superb for the sixth time. OnePlus sticks to its high release rate, releasing the successor of the OnePlus 5T after just 6 months: The OnePlus 6. The Smartphone now has a new SoC, a new glass back, a notch and the cameras are supposed to have been improved as well. In our review, we find out whether or not a quick switch is worth it. Update: OxygenOS 5.1.9 with improved camera quality and other fixes has been released.

With the latest internal hardware and a stunning new design, the OnePlus 8 Pro has it all. You get a 120Hz AMOLED panel, robust cameras, 30W wired and wireless charging, IP68 water resistance, and a clean software without any bloatware with the promise of timely updates. The OnePlus 8 Pro is the obvious choice if you are looking to switch to a flagship.

OnePlus has carved out an excellent reputation for its devices, and it's one that's well warranted. Its phones have historically offered an excellent combination of power and price, giving the big-name competitors a real run for their money. This has never been truer than with the OnePlus 6.

If you want the camera, performance and design of the best flagships on the market without paying the £700-plus pricetag, the OnePlus 6 is the phone you've been waiting for. This was 2018's must-have device, and is still recommended in 2019.

Overall, the OnePlus 6 is a very good flagship phone, unfortunately, it has been here long enough to become the flagship it was originally designed to kill. Priced at RM2799, there are now a lot of phones packing in Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 chipsets, 128GB of storage and more, including AI features which the OnePlus 6 does not have. This doesn’t mean that the OnePlus 6 is a bad phone though, just not the value king it was supposed to be. If you’re looking for a performance device with 8GB RAM then the OnePlus 6 should definitely be in your consideration list.

By carefully crafting the OnePlus 6 configuration, OnePlus is able to carve an excellent core experience for the end user. With benchmark numbers higher than high-profile smartphones, the performance of this Android handset is beyond reproach.

Even if some downsides exist here and there, overall the OnePlus 6 is a complete package. It may not shine exceedingly bright in any one area, but it's a well-rounded smartphone that will suit almost anyone very well. Buy one and you're guaranteed a pretty much frustration-free experience. Oh, and you'll still have some cash left over in your pocket for other things if you chose it over one of its much more expensive competitors.

Starting at $529 (or $579 for the 8GB / 128GB model we tested), you get a lot of value, features and performance with the OnePlus 6, so we're handing it an Editor's Choice award. We hear the OnePlus 6T is on the horizon as well. Yes, we'd like more. Bring it.

Of course, for OnePlus to sell it at this price, not every component is from the top drawer. The camera is good, but it’s not going to compete with those on the Huawei P20 Pro or Pixel 2. Also, the battery is just okay and there’s no official IP rating or Qi wireless charging.

Overall, this is a very impressive device. The design is good, the screen fills the body and does anything you’re watching justice. The waterproofing is a miss but for the price that is no surprise and given that you’re getting a 6.3-inch display, dual camera, facial recognition, fingerprint reader, beautiful design and all the RAM you’d ever need for a lot less than £500, you could do a hell of a lot worse.

The OnePlus 6 is priced to sell at $529. This gets you a smartphone with powerful specs and great performance, but costs had to be cut somewhere. The camera won't be getting any awards, but it is a nice shooter for an average consumer. More demanding photographers will have to look elsewhere.

All things considered, the OnePlus 6 still offers good value for a smartphone based on a high-performance processing platform, but it's not as good a deal as it used to be. OnePlus has a lot of fans that I'm sure will be happy with this phone, but I wouldn't be surprised if their gaze starts wandering elsewhere, especially when the more interesting, equally powerful, and more feature-packed Xiaomi Mi 8 Explorer Edition finally makes its way to Singapore.

Overall I think the OnePlus 6 is an excellent device, and while it’s not perfect, it offers incredible value at its price range and easily beats out any other contender. I been using the OnePlus 6 for probably about a month and half its turned into one of my favorite phones of the year. You are getting tremendous value for your dollar with its killer updated hardware and software to accompany it. Of course I’d like to see maybe stereo speakers and a slightly better display but there are phones in a higher price bracket for that. I can easily recommend this phone to folks that are looking for a killer device and not spending so much to reach that. If you are interested in the OnePlus 6 you can check out their site with prices starting at $529.

For all the plaudits it garnered, the OnePlus 5T wasn't quite a hands-down winner. It didn't launch with the latest Android OS, for example, which isn't the case here, as the OnePlus 6 has the very latest Android version on board. However, it still lacks MicroSD storage expansion and an IP rating, with the latter likely to be missed most.

It's easy to dismiss the OnePlus 6 as an insignificant minor upgrade. New chipset - check, notch - check, somewhat improved camera - check. That's about it. The thing is, the OP6 isn't meant to entice those with a 5T in their pockets, or even OP5 owners, much the same way a Galaxy S9 isn't really a compelling upgrade path for Galaxy S8 owners.

As a regular user of the Samsung Galaxy S9+, which shares the exact same form factor and feel in the hand, reviewing the OnePlus 6 was fascinating. The S9+ has superior display, camera, microphones, (stereo) speakers, waterproofing, health sensors, DAC, always on display – a pretty compelling list. But then the OnePlus 6 is exactly £310 cheaper at today’s prices in the UK. That’s a pretty damned big saving if money is short, enough to pick up a good mid-ranger for another family member as well – perhaps even a second-hand 5T for the complete OnePlus family?

Of course, for OnePlus to sell it at this price, not every component is from the top drawer. The camera is good, but it’s not going to compete with those on the Huawei P20 Pro or Pixel 2. Also, the battery is just okay and there’s no official IP rating or Qi wireless charging.

There is no doubting that the OnePlus 6’s cameras are definitely among the best present in the market at its price point. We expect them to get some stiff competition from the Honor 10, but if it is bright colors and good detail that you seek with a simple enough, uncluttered interface and decent speed, the OnePlus 6 is an excellent option. However, thanks to all the great specifications and numbers and flagship killing talk, OnePlus smartphones often find themselves matched against the very best in the business rather those that fall in its price band. And as far as cameras go, we do not think, that phone matches up with the likes of Google Pixel 2, Samsung Galaxy S9, Huawei P20 Pro or the iPhone X/8/8 Plus in terms of detail or color reproduction. But factor in all that hardware goodness surrounding those cameras, the promise of improved performance through updates, and top it off with the price tag of Rs.34,999, and you will find yourself becoming far more forgiving.

OnePlus 6 definitely nearly has all that it takes to compete with other flagships in the market. The keyword here being 'nearly'. As one can still see the Chinese smartphone brand cutting corners in the form of misses like water-resistance build, no wireless charging, same front-facing camera and battery. But on the brighter side you get some of the crucial features such as OIS, Qualcomm Snapdragon 845, slow-motion video recording and even the gigabit LTE connectivity support.

The OnePlus 6 is what I would call a no nonsense device. It does everything well and has not wasted time figuring out gimmicks. Frankly, I could not find any major flaws in the device. However, I am not sure glass is such a good idea, even with whatever Corning can offer. I have seen too many cracked phone screens to think this is the best material for a smartphone.

All in all, the OnePlus 6 is an excellent followup to last year’s OnePlus 5 in terms of gaming performance with improvements across the board thanks to its generous specs and excellent heat management. Regardless of your affinity for the notch and a gaming battery saver mode that isn't as well-optimised as it possibly could be, this is one of the better phones for gaming this year.

The OnePlus 6 is a killer phone and would - quite frankly - be a competitive flagship even if it was priced to match its competitors. It's not, and its £469 starting price point make it complete no brainer.

So should you be investing in the OnePlus 6? Starting at Rs 34,999 for the 6 GB/ 64 GB avatar and going up to Rs 44,999 for the 8 GB / 256 GB version (Avenger’s edition), this is easily the most expensive OnePlus device ever. The answer really depends on your existing device. To be brutally honest, the OnePlus 6 is a slight step up from the OnePlus 5T but not a major one in terms of performance – our OnePlus 5T is still purring along smoothly. So if you are not a fan of the notch or the revamped design, you can afford to sit back. However, if you are a person looking for a flagship level device at the most affordable price in town, then the OnePlus 6 is in a zone of its own.

The OnePlus 6, with 6GB of RAM and 64GB of internal storage, starts at $699 CAD and is only available in Mirror Black. If you have an extra $70 to spare, then I would recommend the $769 model, which comes with 8GB of RAM, 128GB of storage and is available in all three colours.

The OnePlus 6 is a refreshing glass-based design change for the phone series. Not only does the phone pack the latest flagship processor and up to a whopping 8GB of RAM, it still comes with a solid battery life. Most importantly, the OnePlus 6 features a much improved camera that even beats the iPhone X. OxygenOS continues to deliver a super slick performance, with its intuitive navigation gestures taking advantage of the stunning AMOLED screen’s larger real estate. The lack of microSD expansion and wireless charging may annoy some, but the OnePlus 6 delivers the best balance between performance and value.

The OnePlus 6 will surely make a lot of OnePlus fans happy, and it will likely continue to fuel the company’s steady growth. Up front, you’ll notice the OnePlus has no room for traditional Android interface buttons like back, Home and recent apps. Instead, you can either use on-screen buttons, or, in a move taken straight out of Apple’s playbook — as well as Google’s upcoming Android P update — use gestures to navigate between apps.

How to bring surprises without suspense? I think OnePlus 6 has made a personal demonstration. The workmanship and design of the fuselage are improving with visible changes year by year. Nowadays, on the OnePlus 6 body, both the material and the appearance have more high-end flagship tastes, not to mention the flagship configuration that can be called a monster.

Yes, unless. Go for some other phone only if you want something very specific. For example, you absolutely want the best camera in a phone and don't care about anything else. Get the Pixel 2. Or if you only DESIRE an iPhone, well go ahead and get the iPhone. Or maybe you want a phone that has stereo speakers. May be HTC U11, or the upcoming U12, is what you will like. Or maybe you are willing to spend good bucks in search of near perfection, in which case you can look at the Galaxy S9 Plus. But these are special cases. If you just want a great phone and don't know why you want it, get the OnePlus 6.

When compared to other phones at its own price level, the camera performance on the OnePlus 6 is not exactly groundbreaking, and battery life could of course have been better. Then there's the Mirror Black option at the Rs. 34,999 price point, which might be seen as a deliberate move to make the higher priced variant seem more tempting. However, even at Rs. 39,999, this is the only option with a Snapdragon 845 right now. The software is both versatile and up-to-date which are both significant if longevity is important to you. This is also a phone you can show off quite proudly. We think that most people, especially OnePlus fans looking for an upgrade, will be quite satisfied with the OnePlus 6.

The OnePlus 6 is built for speed from the ground up. The smartphone has the history of being a flagship killer, but despite the top-of-the-class hardware, the compromises in OnePlus phones have also remained consistent, so much so, that it is now acts as a deterrent to buy this over an expensive flagship. The OnePlus 6 is still just as fast, even more beautiful but has the same flaws as last time.

Overall, the OnePlus 6 is a solid upgrade to the OnePlus 5T in almost all the departments such as display, performance, design and camera. Even though there is a notch, which might not be preferred by everyone, the implementation of it good, and you have option to hide it or enable it for certain apps. The gorgeous glass body compliments the display. However, no phone is perfect. Even though the OnePlus 6 is water-resistant, it doesn’t have IP ratings and the phone misses out wireless charging, even though it has a glass body. It also doesn’t have dual speakers.

A lot of the promises made by OnePlus for this launch sound really good. What we think is a big win here though is that OnePlus has managed to build a phone that looks on trend, fashionable and attractive but without any real compromises in performance or specification. It should keep the tech fans happy while also attracting the regular, average consumers it so wants to buy its phones.

As mentioned before, we are being limited today with what we can share about the phone so even the overall impressions have to be vague. But, from what we observed during our stint with the device is that the OnePlus 6 is most definitely an evolutionary product and a minor evolution at that. This isn't necessarily a bad thing, as previous OnePlus devices have been pretty great so any improvement on that, however small, cannot be a bad thing. But it seems now that in an effort to keep prices low and competitive, OnePlus has to hold itself back with every new version. Then there is also the impending arrival of the OnePlus 6T six months from now, which seems all but inevitable at this point, which means the current OnePlus 6 can't have all the toys to play with.
