Overachiever. As a successor to the high-class 14-inch Blade, Razer has introduced a new compact gaming notebook with 15-inch edge-to-edge display. Find out how well the slim gaming notebook performed against its competitors in our extensive review.

The 2018 Razer Blade is an incredibly slick and good-feeling laptop, but it’s held back by some flaws that are tough to ignore. Razer is clearly at the top of its game with the latest Blade, but the rest of the gaming laptop world is clearly catching up.

Essentially by accident, Razer has created an exciting substitute for the usual mobile workstation fare. Though its graphics processor and hexa-core CPU were intended to run games, these components can be harnessed for productivity too – and for much less cash than a high-spec MacBook Pro.

Razer might have stripped away everything I enjoyed most about the original Blade 15, but they didn’t take away its ability to play games on high settings at desirable frame rates. I’d wait for another manufacturer to attempt what Razer hasn’t quite done here... and hopefully do it better.

The Razer Blade 15 is the latest entry into Razer’s flagship line of gaming notebooks. It targets the same space as the stellar Gigabyte Aero 15, aiming to offer buyers a thin and light gaming laptop that doesn’t skimp on specs. The Razer Blade 15 masterfully balances performance and portability.

But if you want to splurge on the "classic" model, which is thinner, has better GPU and screen options, per-key lighting and a better battery, there's also a new version of that. The hardware is the same, but Razer is now offering the Blade 15 in a Mercury White color, which is a welcome break from all that black and green.

Those issues do get in the way of what is otherwise a premium, very well built machine. Gaming performance is excellent, too, but the reality is you will only be able to fit 3-4 games on the laptop at any one time, while those planning to run CPU-heavy tasks will also experience slow down.

The Razer Blade 15 delivers absolutely everything we want in a gaming laptop, in one of the best-designed bodies we’ve ever seen. The build quality is top-notch, and gaming performance matches. The downside, of course, is its price. The Blade 15 that’s for a GTX 1060 Max-Q GPU and a 60Hz screen. The GTX 1070 Max-Q models, like the one we tested here, with more expensive options if you want a larger SSD or a 4K panel.

Despite its compromises, my overall feelings for the Razer Blade 15 are positive. It’s not the perfect computer but it comes close. It checks off just about every box I have for a computer and does so in impressive fashion. There are some compromises, like the poor speakers, and I have my bones to pick about the 144Hz display not being available in 4K, but the overall quality of the computer makes up for it.

The 2018 Razer Blade is Razer's most refined laptop yet. It's not revolutionary, and lacks any particularly novel features such as a second screen, but that may just be what makes it so good. This seems especially significant, given that the very first Razer Blade that the company announced in 2012 featured a trackpad that doubled as a secondary display and 10 additional buttons with customizable icons.

The Razer Blade 15 Base model certainly looks and feels like a member of the Blade family. The chassis is very high quality with a solid construction thanks to the CNC milled aluminium body. The GTX 1660 Ti is only marginally slower than the RTX 2060 in raw GPU horsepower while retailing for hundreds less and it manages to outperform the fastest Blade 15 Pascal configuration. Some hidden drawbacks like the slightly less accurate display and slower CPU performance detract only little from the overall experience.

The Razer Blade 15 is a very good gaming laptop, but a questionable value when you compare it with competitors. At $1,699, Razer is asking a lot for a laptop with a GTX 1660 Ti graphics. Then again, laptops with better graphics performance at a lower price don't have the same premium build quality or long battery life. If you're willing to exchange unibody aluminum for plastic, then HP's Omen 15 is a good option. You could even get the Lenovo Legion Y740 with an RTX 2060 for about the same price as the Blade 15.

If you want to purchase a Razer Blade 15, you should know up-front that it’s expensive, it runs hot and it doesn’t have a great keyboard. If those aren’t dealbreakers, however, the machine garners a solid recommendation. The compact and stylish design goes a long way, as does the good gaming performance. Tom’s Guide is currently in the process of reviewing comparable machines from Acer and Alienware, and it may be worth holding out to see how they stack up. Otherwise, though, the Blade 15 has been one of the most consistent gaming laptops on the market for years, and its 2022 variant continues that trend.

The settings within Synapse 3 give us a clear picture of the compromises faced by Razer. In Balanced mode the laptop is lovely and quiet, however the CPU is limited to 35W PL1 and the graphics to 95W which effectively cripples the expensive hardware. In Custom High mode the CPU operates at its 45W TDP and the graphics have 105W to work with. Push things to the limit with Custom Boost mode and the CPU runs on 65W, the maximum graphics power is 105W and the cooling fans are howling away and making a fair racket. Contrast that with the larger MSI GE76 Raider which can feed 72W to the CPU (the PL1 limit is 110W) and 165W to the graphics and you can see exactly why the Razer Blade 15 is crushed by the MSI Raider GE76 in our charts.

I still think the Razer Blade is one of the best 15-inch laptops you can buy, especially if you’re in the market for one of the thinnest gaming options possible. With this 2022 Blade 15 generation, Razer kept the important parts of the design the same as before, while slightly improving the typing experience and cramming inside some of the best hardware available at this point for the thin-and-light segment. At the same time, though, the 2022 Blade is way more expensive than the previous generation, and I'm having a hard time justifying it at the current price levels.

While the Blade 15 isn't quite as sleek or portable as the latest breed of 14-inch gaming machines, there's something to be said for having a big, luxury alternative. Sure, it's really expensive, and its 15.6-inch screen and 4.4-pound body mean you might not be able to throw it in your typical messenger bag. But it's got top-notch components, a strong frame that exhibits basically zero flex, and impressive performance in a slick and (comparatively) subdued design. Well, aside from that big glowing logo. In a way, the Blade 15 is a fantastic take on a modern desktop replacement, especially for people like me who don't want to lug around a giant 17-inch rig. Unlike the ROG Flow Z13, you don't need to worry about a separate graphics dock to get peak framerates. And thanks to a wealth of ports, you can leave all of your dongles and adapters at home. So while the Blade 15 doesn't make sense for anyone on a budget, if you've got the funds, this thing is a real treat.
