Gaming laptops have come a long way from being bulky to slim, but they still don’t match desktop counterparts in terms of performance and are more costly. It’s sad to see that a beastly machine such as the M17x R5 gets outdated so fast with the latest titles. The fact is, even if the M17x R5 comes with Maxwell powered graphics, the performance will still not match up with the satisfying performance of the Maxwell desktop graphics cards.

Somehow, Alienware has managed to top itself -- again. The Alienware 17 continues to catch every single eye in the room with its cocky, flashy design. And once this rig has your attention, it reels you in more with a gorgeous 1080p display and a stellar sound system. From there, it hits you with a one-two punch from the upgraded Core i7 processor and Nvidia GeForce GTX 880M CPU -- a combination that Floyd Mayweather would be proud of.

Save for some nagging (but ultimately fixable) problems, the Alienware 17 is one of the best gaming laptops money can buy. From its sharp metallic and soft-touch build to a host of powerful components, this is a one-stop shop for getting into PC gaming with a single click. That said, over $2,000 is a fat wad of cash to put up in hopes of avoiding the perceived hassles of PC gaming. And again, if space is a concern, there are plenty of options that offer more power for less, given this isn't a laptop you'll want in your backpack for long.

Overall, we're very pleased with the balance on this system, even if AMD Enduro's stability was a sore spot. Disabling the function isn't difficult, but it does come with a battery life tradeoff. Hopefully AMD and Alienware will be able to improve the situation with better drivers and software in the future. Regardless, if you're gaming on this machine, you're going to always want to use the discrete GPU anyway.

Complaining about the size and weight of the Alienware 17 is missing the point, really – this laptop is all about no-compromise gaming, and in this it excels. OK, so the styling won't be to everyone's tastes and it's a long way from cheap, but if fragging is your thing, this beast of a machine will be your new best friend.

Overall we are very impressed with the Alienware 17. It offers almost all of the performance of the Alienware 18 in a more convenient, portable package. The aesthetic design remains very similar, despite the difference in size. The Alienware 17 is very eye catching and is sure to attract gamers who are looking to buy a desktop replacement. Even though the Alienware 17 isn’t currently available with the same range-topping Intel Core i7-4930MX processor as the Alienware 18, the performance of the i7-4800MQ will be more than enough for the vast majority of users.

Side by side, the massive Alienware 18 we reviewed alongside this 17-inch model is the more impressive, and more expensive system. But the (slightly) more modest Alienware 17 is probably the winner in terms of practicality for most shoppers, cramming nearly all the same features, and much of the performance, into a thinner, lighter body.

Alienware still delivers a great product with a striking design and very robust build quality. But you pay for the Alienware brand, and if you just want the best bang for your buck then we suggest you will want to shop around a bit. If money isn’t an option though, this is a seriously good, if not quite great, gaming laptop.

Surprise: Dell's legacy as an OEM and Alienware's gaming cred still make for an awesome combination -- both the Alienware 14 and 17 rank among the best gaming laptops we've reviewed this year. Excellent build quality, killer components and excellent performance have left us with little to complain about.

Gaming tank. Big, heavy and a case full of fast hardware describes the new Alienware 17. Especially hardcore gamers will be interested in the GeForce GTX 880M, which is one of the fastest single-chip GPUs. But can the overall package support the good initial impression?

All told, this rig exemplifies why the Alienware brand remains the first choice for many gamers. Like its predecessors, the 17 sports a sleek and stylish soft-touch and aluminum design, a vivid 1080p display, and an excellent keyboard. And if you have the cash, it can be configured with dream-machine parts for the best performance money can buy.

As usual, Alienware’s latest gaming machine looks the part, and its exciting design is backed up by benchmark-breaking speed in the latest titles. The screen is good but not great, however, and the battery life during gameplay is typically poor. As usual, though, the price is high, and portable gaming power is available elsewhere for less, albeit without the bells and whistles. Only consider this if you’ve got money to burn.

The Alienware 17 is attractive, fast, and specced to the max. It’s the best performer we’ve tested so far, and it’s comparatively lightweight for the category. It does have its drawbacks, though: Lower-than-average battery life, a slippery keyboard, and a mediocre trackpad. This is one of the better-looking 17.3-inch notebooks out there, and it definitely delivers on performance.

The Alienware 17 isn't perfect – a laptop costing this much really ought to include a proper solid-state drive, and maybe 16 GB memory too. And, of course, its sheer size and weight mean that it's rarely going to leave home. However it provides top-of-the-range performance that would previously have cost you £2000 or more. It's a great choice for gamers who can afford not to compromise so much.

There's no doubt that the Alienware 17 continues the company's reputation for having high-quality, high-performance gaming laptops. A premium price comes with certain expectations, however, and with the less expensive Digital Storm Krypton offering similar performance, there is the question of what the extra money gets you. In the case of the Alienware 17, that means a premium design with high-quality metal construction, top-of-the-line hardware, and more than a terabyte of storage space.

The Alienware 17 is one of the few notebooks we’ve tested that leaves us with almost all praise. We like its futuristic design and AlienFX customizable lighting system, excellent gaming performance, solid build quality, good keyboard, touchpad and speakers; and effective cooling system. We noticed battery life at just less than three hours was considerably less than the Nvidia-based Alienware 17 we tested last year (five hours). This AMD-based Alienware 17 still turned an acceptable time for a desktop replacement but it leaves room for improvement.

The new Alienware 17 is a powerful, well-built laptop that should fit the needs of most gamers well. While the Radeon M290X in our review unit provided slightly less capable graphics processing than the GTX 880M, it is also sold for less. You’ll have to spend about $250 more to receive a similar configuration with Nvidia’s hardware.

Alienware has done the gaming laptop-desktop hybrid right with an even leaner 17-inch monster and its accompanying Graphics Amplifier. The laptop itself is a completely self-contained gaming machine, and things only get even better with connecting the GPU box. The ability to use the screen, plus not needing to plug in a keyboard and mouse makes it a much more sensible solution than the MSI GS30 Shadow. And if you're looking for something smaller, the Alienware 13 also works with the Graphics Amplifier.

The Alienware 17 is in an interesting position. What once would have been considered a beastly rig, now looks somewhat small next to a new generation of titanic gaming notebooks with desktop-grad graphics. But that doesn't mean the Alienware can't keep up with the Joneses, because its UHD screen is one of the best displays in its class, its battery life is marathonlike next to some of its competition, and the graphics amp offers an even bigger punch (and way better longevity) than laptops with desktop Nvidia 980 GPUs.

The Alienware 17 is one of the best gaming laptops money can buy. At this stage we just need to check out the relevant competition, the Asus G752, the Acer G9-791 and so on, to find out which will become our go-to recommendation for 2016 gamers with big budgets. Great performance is really a given with an Alienware box, but what really impresses is its smart use of large, quiet, low-rpm fans. It can work hard without showing it is doing so on the outside. The lingering concern is one around price, another Alienware staple. While the Alienware 17’s base specs appear at first competitive, by leaving out the expensive but likely popular 16GB RAM and SSD upgrades, most people’s desired configs are still going to end up rather pricey.

What a notebook! We’ll start with its flaws because they’re very simple to enumerate – Alienware 17 R3’s price renders it day-dream territory for 99% of all users. And we’re not even going to bother discussing the Alienware Graphics Amplifier bundle. Actually, we don’t recommend the latter because in our tests, it didn’t seem to provide a big FPS advantage in most of the games -we’ll share a detailed test report in a dedicated article.

With this particular configuration at the price of near on R50 000, we can't recommend the Alienware 17 R3. It isn't that the notebook is all bad, it's just floored by cheaper, newer technology. If you must have an Alienware notebook though opt for the version with a 1080p display, or wait until the new series is released.

In the end, the Alienware 17 R4 should be your premium gaming choice only if you are looking for the best possible gaming experience, otherwise, the Predator 17 X will do just about the same for a little bit less cash. But when you think about it, Alienware has always been Apple in the gaming industry for better or worse and if you decide to go with the new Alienware 17 R4, we don’t judge you. Not at all because it’s one hell of a gaming laptop.

Alienware laptops have grown up in looks and are modernized--gone is the ultra-chunky and overly aggressive look. We welcome the modern cooling design and lower heat internals that are very 2016, and the classy looking aluminum and soft touch black finishes. Pricing is more attainable too. Of course, you get an unparalleled AlienFX LED lightshow too, in all its zone programmable goodness--and that can all be turned off with the press of a button so you can take it to work and not be teased. We're impressed with the low CPU and GPU temperatures that should ensure a long life, but then Alienware had a lot of space to work with to make that happen here. Performance is as you'd expect for the hardware inside, and the laptop can handle any (any!) game on high to ultra settings up to 1440p. It can even do some games at 4K like GTA V, but not the piggish Witcher 3. And of course, like all NVIDIA Pascal 10 series machines, it's VR-ready.

Featuring a full-fat GTX 1070, or 1080 graphics card, the Alienware 17 is an absolute beast of gaming machine. Outside of the Asus GX800 and Acer Predator 21X, which run the GTX 1080 in SLI, you’re not going to get a more powerful gaming laptop. If money is no object then this could be the ideal choice for competitive gamers looking for a mobile rig that they can lug to LAN parties. Its overall mass-market appeal will be determined by one key detail we currently don’t have; how much it will cost.

There are rough edges, from the keyboard's zone backlight to loud fans to its enormous size, but the Alienware 17 R4 is still one of the few machines that can truly function as a semi-portable desktop experience.

There are rough edges. Zone backlighting is a bit outdated, the fans are loud, battery life is average, and the extra inch-plus of venting adds insult to injury in terms of the Alienware 17’s size. I’d love to see Alienware branch out and bring its unique aesthetic to a thin, lightweight Max-Q laptop one of these days.

There's no doubt that the Alienware 17 R4 is one of the most capable gaming laptops we've seen, making easy work of our CPU and GPU benchmark tests and providing generally smooth gameplay. The design is eye-catching too, sporting a flurry of customisable LEDs across the body of the laptop, although it'll never look as sleek and attractive as a MacBook Pro.

Overall, if you’re looking for a desktop replacement that delivers form and function, the latest Alienware 17 is a fantastic option. At a smidge under $3,000, it’s a pricey notebook for sure, but we found a similarly configured Sager NP9876 to cost more without the excellent look and feel of the Alienware 17. If it were up to us, we’d go for the model with the GeForce GTX 1070 and 1080p IPS display for $2,299, which drops the price enough for an Oculus Rift or HTC Vive.

Let the games begin! Or the multitasking, or the video editing or the coding -- heck, anything you want to do, the Alienware 17 can handle with aplomb. For $3,974, you get a system that doles out ridiculous frame rates, a beautiful display, awesome audio system and Tobii Eye tracking. The laptop's also not too shabby on the multitasking front, thanks to its overclockable 8th Gen Intel processor, which you should definitely overclock, because the app is supereasy to use.

The Alienware 17 R5 lived up to our expectations. Performance-wise you can’t get much better. Maybe the AMD Ryzen 7 2700 can beat the Core i9-8950HK in some benchmarks but real-world performance shouldn’t be any different. And as far as GPU performance goes, the GTX 1080 is the best on the market for now. We are waiting for NVIDIA’s new GPUs which should release soon judging by all the rumors.
