As this Asus ROG Zephyrus G14 review shows, this gaming laptop is just a beautiful thing. A laptop that's small and tough, powerful and slick, detailed and desirable. If you can find one - particularly the spin we have on test here - you're in for a treat even if you're not a full-on gamer.

In an era that values minimalism and space efficiency more than anything, the ASUS ROG Zephyrus G14 is a blessing to those who seek to get the most out of those two aspects in their new gaming laptop. Though no one probably asked for the AniMe Matrix LED display on the hood, its inclusion certainly adds a hit of much-needed flair to an otherwise simplistic design.

ASUS’ latest attempt to reinvent the wheel when it comes to gaming laptops doesn’t quite soar when it comes to aesthetics but everything else is a treat. The performance is exceptional enough to offset any friction generated by the drastic departure from the style and vibe of past Zephryus hardware. With the G14, it’s clear that ASUS are playing a fresh new tune to the gaming notebook world. Now they just need to learn to play it well.

The Zephyrus G14 slots in a niche of its own, somewhere between compact ultrabooks and performance 15-inch ultraportables, as the most powerful 14-inch notebook of the moment. Asus nailed the build quality, the ergonomics and the performance and pretty much everything else in this sort of a form-factor, but the high internal and chassis temperatures in demanding loads, as well as the limited GPU/screen options, might push some of you towards the 15-inch segment instead.

According to Asus, the G14 will start at just under $1,500, and both models arrive beginning in March. The AniMe-equipped versions will ship a little later than the standard ones. You can't get a 1440p display on the G15, but it can be configured with a GTX 1660 Ti in addition to RTX 2060.

As it is, the Zephyrus G14 GA401 has plenty to offer, but we’ll have to take it through a proper spin before we can draw conclusions on its performance, behavior, and overall worth. We also need to find out more about pricing, I’ve been told it’s going to be priced higher than the 2019 15-inch ZenBook G 15 at launch, which came at $1199. Too much higher and it would be getting too close to those 15-inch options, and I’m not sure its smaller footprint would be enough to steer you in its direction.

Just when I thought I had seen everything a gaming laptop had to offer, here comes Asus with something way from left field. The Asus ROG Zephyrus G14 and G15 are sporting sexy, slim designs that are already showstoppers –– they’ve even incorporated the company’s ErgoLift design for more comfortable typing. But Asus is raising the bar by launching AMD-powered laptops and incorporating the innovative Anime Matrix technology. Yes, it’s sort of kitchy, but it’s a great reminder that the sky’s the limit when it comes to laptop design.

The octa-core Ryzen 9 4900HS would be impressive on any 15.6-inch or 17.3-inch gaming laptop, but to see it work so well in such a small 14-inch form factor is extraordinary. There are, however, one or two caveats preventing it from being the ultimate gaming laptop.

Priced Rs 98,990 onwards, the Asus ROG Zephyrus G14 is an all-round versatile notebook that will impress both gamers and content creators. The notebook is a design marvel with untethered performance, a combination that is unique to it. Asus ROG Zephyrus G14 is not what it looks like. It’s not just a gaming laptop. Surprisingly, it can be used for other regular purposes as well. The Asus ROG Zephyrus G14 is truly a marvel. It manages to pack into this incredibly small form factor the power throughput of machines that need to be much bigger. As much of an engineering marvel this is in every right, it still struggles with dissipating heat in an effective manner. The keyboard can get unusably hot with tasks like gaming and rendering going on, which is incredibly disappointing. Thankfully, the AMD Ryzen 9 4900HS does not throttle at any point, which is good. The laptop's LED-studded Anime Matrix display is every bit worth the hype, but the novelty wears off pretty soon. Overall, for the money, you could buy laptops that deliver far better performance, but with the Zephyrus G14, you're paying for a good amount power packed into a very compact form-factor.

ASUS tells us that this review unit retails at Rs 1,61,990, which is a bit high given that proper gaming laptops like the Lenovo Legion Y740 can be had for about 10k less while also offering a more powerful GPU. The ROG Zephyrus G14 offers reasonable value and there's a lot to like about this machine. While it is possible to find cheaper laptops with full-power RTX 2060 GPUs, those thicker, heavier machines don’t have the awesome AMD CPU. We’d only consider looking elsewhere if you’re specifically searching for more GPU power, a larger screen, or a higher refresh rate. The G14 is a compelling option for gaming and productivity.

At the end of the day, this is a device with some compromises. However, you have some upgradability options, two USB Type-C 3.1 (Gen. 2) ports, which despite lacking Thunderbolt 3 certification can output a DisplayPort 1.4 signal and can charge the laptop with 65W worth of power. Well, at least one of them. But the point here is – you are not buying the best laptop, nor the most powerful one. However, you are getting the best 14-inch gaming machine that money can buy right now (mostly due to the lack of 14-inch gaming laptops though).

Thanks to AMD’s impressive new 7nm Ryzen 7 and Ryzen 9 HS 8-core processors, the computing power is top of the heap, equaling Intel’s 8-core i7 and i9 45 watt CPUs but with less heat and power consumption. The laptop is available with our NVIDIA RTX 2060 Max-Q graphics or a GTX 1650 or GTX 1660 Ti. We have the full HD IPS 120Hz display and there’s a QHD resolution option. The ROG Zephyrus G14 isn’t without fault. The biggest gripe is that it gets too hot to the touch, especially when gaming. You’d need to use an external keyboard if you’re doing anything taxing for extended periods of time. It’s also not the most value gaming laptop out there. ASUS’ Strix line can offer you similar performance at a lower price. But if portability and aesthetic are really important to you, then it’s an excellent choice. Asus could surely do something both those temperatures though, by providing a Gaming-optimized power profile that would limit the overpowered CPU, allowing it to run cooler with games. That should not be hard to implement since the profile seems to exist already, but it only kicks in automatically when playing games on an external monitor, with the laptop’s lid closed. Will it happen, though? I sure hope so, but I’m not going to hold my breath for it.

The ROG Zephyrus G14 is a triumph for both ASUS and AMD, having successfully worked together to put out a gaming notebook that can finally put Intel on notice. As it is, the notebook has plenty to offer, but I will still have to take a retail unit (once I get my hands on it) for a spin before I can draw conclusions on its overall worth. While ASUS has let on that the Zephyrus G14 will be available in Singapore sometime in May, they have yet to talk about the elephant in the room – pricing. AMD has traditionally targeted at price-conscious consumers and I will be surprised if ASUS steers the Zephyrus G14 towards the same price direction as their Intel-based products.

Asus's ROG Zephyrus G14 is one of the best gaming laptops we've tested. It's thinner and lighter than most of the competition, and with up an Nvidia 2060 GPU and an AMD R9-4900H processor, it's legitimately faster than some high-end all-in-one PCs we've tested in the past. Overall, we’re impressed with the ASUS ROG Zephyrus G14 and the Ryzen 4000 series mobile process within the system, but heat and noise will be a concern for some users. As we’ve shown, the CPU can get quite hot under sustained load and the system’s fans can generate quite a bit of noise under some conditions. That’s par for the course with many gaming notebooks, but something to keep in mind nonetheless.

Yet we come away positive for AMD's ambitions in the mobile space. It has proved that it can mix class-leading CPU performance with superb battery life. If you're in the market for a high-quality gaming laptop this year that's capable in all areas, the AMD Ryzen Mobile 4000 series deserves serious attention.

We have been able to dig up information on a number of versions of G14 but the prices have not been confirmed in advance of the launch date so we shall hold off on a final judgement about value for money. Right now it seems you pay a significant premium as you step up the product stack and improve the CPU and GPU, moving from £999 to £1,799. The underlying hardware in the chassis remains the same across the range of Zephyrus G14 laptops and that strikes us a good move as the tiny screen bezel, ErgoLift hinge and inclusion of Type-C charging are features that deserve to be shared.

The Asus ROG Zephyrus G14 may not be the most powerful gaming laptop you can buy, but we reckon it's the best. Asus has perfectly balanced every feature, so there's no major weak point in sight. Even the design shows no sign of compromise, with a weight more akin to an ultrabook than your typical high-performance gaming portable. The incredibly good value price point is the final factor in confirming the Zephyrus G14 as the new golden standard for gaming laptops, with rivals such as Razer and Alienware needing significant strides to catch up.

Do you want 11-plus hours of battery life and killer performance? Oh, and a bright display topped with a comfortable keyboard and strong speakers? You just can't beat the Asus ROG Zephyrus G14. Sure, it doesn't have a webcam, and its keyboard lighting is pretty bad, but those cons are negligible.

Still, this laptop goes comfortably above 60fps, which is what you want at this price range. With this power and the 120Hz screen, it’s a solid AAA gaming machine and an excellent competitive multiplayer laptop. If you really want higher frame rates than this, the options are out there, but we’re big fans of this total package. The Zephyrus G14 earns our Editors’ Choice for midrange gaming laptops for its strong performance and unmatched portability.

The ROG Zephyrus G14 is an impressive little gaming laptop. Just be sure that "little" is what you really want and you don't mind switching to the less-impressive Silent mode for decent away-from-the-plug battery life.

The Asus Zephyrus G14 was the laptop AMD used when it showed the world its Ryzen 4000 processors for gaming laptops, and now we kind of see why. This is a relatively thin and light device that delivers performance and battery life that we've never seen before in this category. Both AMD and Asus knocked it out of the park. At $1,449 (about £1,170, AU$2,351), the Zephyrus G14 is a bit pricey, but compared to similar systems like the Lenovo Legion Y740, you can get an RTX 2060-equipped model at the same price, but with less RAM and a much weaker processor. So, really, if you look at that high price tag in another context, Asus is positioning an AMD Ryzen 9-equipped laptop against Intel Core i7 systems that simply cannot compete.

This year, ASUS unveiled its new gaming laptop with Zephyrus G14. This new notebook with everything you would expect but with a discreet image and adjustable to other uses. Whether it is to play, work or study, the most important thing about G14 is on the inside. ASUS launched the new Zephyrus G14, a 14-inch gaming laptop with a sober, compact design. It leaves nothing more to be desired in terms of performance, bringing at least 10 hours of video playback on battery power on a light notebook.

In their early years, gaming laptops were meant to be desktop replacements. The first Razer Blade, released in 2011, was almost seven pounds; the 2012 Blade was 6.6. Battery life was a laughing matter. (The 2017 Zephyrus had just over two hours.) Gaming laptops were bulky and garish. They were designed for gaming on a budget, not for gaming on the go.

Okay – so the price of this exact configuration of the Zephyrus G14 is at RM5,299. Looking purely at the specs itself, it might seem expensive. But the true value of this laptop is in its build quality, the materials used to build this laptop, the keyboard, the trackpad, and obviously – the AniMe Matrix.

The ASUS ROG Zephyrus G14 GA401I variant is an interesting proposition. Like its siblings, it blends a light (for a gaming laptop) and compact chassis, a sufficiently beefy array of hardware for tackling modest AAA gaming, one of the best speakers setups we’ve seen in a gaming laptop and great battery life too to make it one of the best slim gaming laptops that money can buy.

The Asus ROG Zephyrus G14 AniMe Matrix is a fun spin on an excellent gaming notebook, adding a customizable, dynamic LED grid to the laptop's lid. You've never seen anything like it, though the added cost dampens some of the “best value” mojo of the original G14.

Starting at a price of 80,990 without the AniMe Matrix display, and Rs 98,990 for the entry-level model with it, the Asus Zephyrus G14 doesn't come cheap. However, it offers enough in terms of value and performance to help it stand out from the crowd and in effect justify the price. The laptop offers a unique design that's not quite what you expect from your heavy-duty gaming laptop, but still carries features that would remind you of the same. However, it's premium-end looks, lightweight design and the customisable AniMe Matrix display should definitely fly with casual gamers and content creators.

The Zephyrus G14 was the only game in town when it launched early last year, but times have changed. Some aspects of the system still hold up well while others are already starting to age when compared to the new 14-inch Razer Blade 14.

Thanks to Best Buy I'm revisiting the ASUS G14 Laptop with a NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 GPU after 8 months. It's still one of the best 14" laptops you can buy. Hopefully this review/revisit helps you decide on whether the ASUS G14 is the perfect fit for you this holiday season. Let me know if you have any questions below!

Unfortunately, while this laptop hasn’t changed that much, its competition has. The G14 is no longer the most powerful 14-inch gaming laptop you can buy — and while its battery life in particular may still make it a great buy for some users, it’s no longer the obvious choice for everyone. The Blade 14 offers significantly more powerful chips in a chassis that’s thinner and almost as light. And while the Blade 14 is more expensive, there are also a number of ways to get an RTX 3070 for a lower price than the G14 is asking here. If you’re willing to go for something slightly bigger and miss out on the fancy lights, the Zephyrus G15 will give this exact chassis design (with the same exceptional keyboard, touchpad, audio, and battery life) with much better gaming results for less money. If you still want fancy lights, you can also get a 5900HX and an RTX 3070 (along with a 144Hz display) in the RGB-packed ROG Strix G15 at a lower price than my test unit. Again, the G14 is still excellent. But there’s more excellent stuff in this category now than there was last year.

Summing up this review, the Asus ROG Zephyrus G14 2021 is still a decent 14” gaming laptop—despite its hot flaws. From its compact form-factor, a comfortable keyboard, color-accurate display, and impressive battery endurance, there’s a lot of reason to pick this portable gaming and content creation workstation. The heating issue, as I mentioned earlier, is an inherent drawback of the 14” chassis but you can always dial down the settings for relatively cooler gaming performance. So, if you’re looking for a powerful 14″ gaming laptop, the Zephyrus G14 presents itself as a decent option to consider—although there’s a scarce number of alternatives, to begin with.

The Asus ROG Zephyrus G14 (2021) is an excellent option for those who want to game and work on their laptop, featuring superb specs, a vibrant Quad HD display and a lightweight design. However, the lack of any webcam may be a major issue for those working from home.

I’ve compared the new ASUS Zephyrus G14 against last year’s model and other gaming laptops to see what sort of improvements are on offer. I’ve also tested it in 13 games at both 1440p and 1080p resolutions, and tested with an external screen to boost performance.

The updated version of the ASUS ROG Zephyrus G14 GA401 impresses us just like the 2020 variant. The new iteration has a lot to offer – it looks good – not too gamer-ish and that’s why you can use it for office purposes as well without being distracted by hundreds of glowing RGBs. Moreover, the device is compact and light as well which contributes to good portability and it’ll fit in most backpacks. The ASUS ROG Zephyrus G14 GA401 looks and feels like a modern compact versatile machine and it really is. Despite its premium look and build, the device is loud during heavy loads and its shell isn’t too cool in this situation. We don’t like the absence of Thunderbolt support – a premium device like this should offer an extra like that. Ok, we’ll not complain too much about the lack of an SD card reader. Despite the abovementioned cons, this 14-inch gaming laptop remains one of the best offers on the market and if you’re on the hunt for a powerful, compact, and light gaming laptop you can shortlist it.

Yes, the Asus ROG Zephyrus G14 is a great buy, even a better one than its older 2020 variant. However, that is if you can ignore the few pitfalls like the lack of an ethernet port, and a webcam, which may not matter to a lot of gamers, but could be important for those planning to use the laptop for office-work and Zoom calls. If these elements aren’t as important to you, the Zephyrus G14 2021 is a solid recommendation.
