Thin is in. How thin of a laptop can you fit a GTX 980M? The Gigabyte P37 is the thinnest 17.3-inch notebook with the Nvidia GPU and we find out if there are any performance consequences that may entail.

What Gigabyte is offering here is an uber-thin portable gaming device, but this compactness comes at the price of excessive overheating, leading to lots of whirring fans and a noise like a hairdryer. The laptop performs excellently and can deal with any game, but this is not enough to overcome slight flaws in design.

If you're after a slick, thin, large and powerful gaming laptop that's not too over the top in the looks department, Gigabyte's P37X is the machine for you, even though it's pretty pricey and chomps through battery life faster than you'll be able to finish your games. Still, with plenty of firepower, you'll be conquering your favourite games as long as there's a power plug handy.

The Gigabyte P37X promises a system that can play demanding PC games on the go, and mostly delivers. While I was reviewing the P37X, I had to grapple with a lot of small irritants: an off-center keyboard, unimpressive speakers, a monitor that should have been colorful and a noisy fan. However, this system delivers excellent frame rates and performance, and ultimately, these are more important factors.

Overall, if you're willing to make the sacrifices in portability that using a 17-inch laptop entails, there's a whole lot to like about the P37X. The screen is superb for gaming and multimedia editing alike, and its size makes all of those tasks more enjoyable. The keyboard is comfortable, the processor and GPU can handle the most demanding apps and games, and the battery life is better than it should be for a gaming laptop.

The Gigabyte P37X is a super-powered gaming laptop that’s a lot slimmer and a bit lighter than the rest, while still offering the same grade specs as much larger machines. It doesn’t have the juvenile style of the brasher gaming laptops, so if that’s your bag, step right up.

The P37X is simultaneously massive yet tiny. In terms of the length and width, it’s a whopper thanks to the large 17.3 inch display, yet it measures a tiny 22.5mm deep. Most gaming laptops with a screen of this size tip the scales well in excess of three or four kilograms, but Gigabyte has trimmed the fat to lower the weight to just 2.7kg (add another hundred grams if you included the optical drive). This makes it surprisingly portable for such a behemoth, proving that road warriors needn’t totally compromise mobility for performance.

The Gigabyte P37X is built for gaming speed, based on a large 17-inch display chassis but in a thinner than traditional case. With the help of the best single-chip mobile graphics processor currently on the market it can play any game you want, up to very high rendering quality. It may not stand out in style but it gets the job done, albeit at a high price.

The P37X is Gigabyte's most ambitious gaming laptop to date. Cramming a quad-core Intel processor and Nvidia's fastest mobile GPU into a chassis that's less than 23mm thick is no small feat, yet Gigabyte has still found room for 16GB of memory, two SSDs, a hard disk and an optical drive. An impressive array of hardware for a thin gaming laptop, but inevitable compromises have been made.

Starting with the build quality of the P37X we have a system which immediately feels well built as we unbox it. The metal chassis feels solid and we like the minimal branding and curved edges. The parts used by Gigabyte for the key components are all from quality brands and little touches like adding in an ambient light sensor for the keyboard LEDs help elevate this aspect to a higher level.

The fiddly-feeling mousepad is about the only disappointment to note. Well, that and the predictably limited battery life. Otherwise the Gigabyte P37X V3 delivers serious gaming performance and power without any of the extra weight or potentially embarrassing styling you get on some laptops that fly the gaming banner proudly.

Without the kind of powerful, high-end components that come with a high-end gaming laptop like the P37X, you won't be able to play at full resolution or enjoy most up-to-date gaming titles with a constant 60 fps frame rate. It's these high-end components that quickly suck a laptop battery dry, plus they output considerable heat that requires heavy-duty cooling, not to mention driving up the cost.

Gigabyte's P37W v4 is one of the fastest laptops we've had the pleasure of using, and its battery life isn't as bad as we were expecting from a gaming laptop. It is ridiculously expensive though at around £1,450, and the keyboard and trackould be a whole lot better. Still, in its class of 17.3-inch laptops, it's one of the best.

The Gigabyte P37x v4 has a few flaws compared to other gaming notebooks, but the machine’s upsides easily outweigh them. The keyboard’s off center placement is a bit awkward, the fan is noisy and the matte display doesn’t quite offer the same color contrast that we’d like from a gaming device. But that does little to mar P37x’s potent combo of performance and portability that few laptops on the market can match, especially at the $2,200 price tag. If you’re looking for strong performance on the go then the Gigabyte P37x is an excellent option.

This looks familiar… Gigabyte hasn’t wasted any time reworking their P35X, now suffixed with “v5” so as to indicate that this is merely an iterative update. Given that, can the conservative revisions to the $2,300 P35X v5 preserve its relevance in the gaming market?

The P35Xv5 scored 80% in the sRGB test, which means colours are reasonably accurate. It’s by no means a professionally calibrated display, so if you’re a photo or video editor who requires colour accuracy then you might want to give this one a miss – but it’s definitely good enough for most uses. Overall I’m impressed by the display quality. Watching movies, playing games and browsing the web all look great on the P35Xv5.

Probably not. The design of the P35Xv5 is both it’s selling point and Achilles heel. Yes, it’s relatively thin and light, but looks-wise it's dull, it's poorly made – and if you’d just spent £1,600 on a new notebook then I can guarantee that you'd be disappointed on seeing the P35Xv5 for the first time. However, beneath all the cheap plastic is a solid gaming notebook with an excellent screen. Opting for the top-end 980M alongside the Skylake i7 and 16GB DDR4 RAM provides great performance, and you’ll have no trouble maintaining 60fps in modern games at Full HD.

The Gigabyte P35X v5 looks the part of an unassuming 15-inch laptop with a thin chassis, but underneath all its plainness is one of the most powerful gaming machines we've reviewed thus far. Having a full 8GB of video RAM on Nvidia's top end mobile graphics chip shows just how close we are to 4K gaming on a mobile platform. And when you don't need all the high-resolution detail, this machine can absolutely destroy games at lower settings.

As Intel’s CPUs let even gaming beasts like the Gigabyte P35X v5 creep into battery life territory that almost makes them viable as roving productivity machines, every big of extra portability becomes more valuable. Sure enough, this is one of the most portable machines to feature a GTX 980M graphics card. The problem is that if being able to lug the Gigabyte P35X V5 around conveniently isn’t a major concern, this wouldn't be our top pick. Performance is great, the screen is fine and there are plenty of connections. But fairly noisy fans and better touchpad/keyboard combos available from Alienware and Asus make it drop down our most-wanted list a little way. Still, if portability and sober looks appeal, it deserves a place on your shortlist.

While I might bemoan the P57W's utter lack of style, when it comes to playing games on the go, does it really matter how many flashing lights are on your laptop? Because at $1,600, the Gigabyte's P57W is the kitchen sink of midrange gaming machines. The P57W’s sub-one inch thin chassis is impressive, as is its 6.4 pound carry weight. Its all plastic build probably helped keep the weight in check. That’s actually one of our complaints; we’d like to see some use of aluminum, or at least rubberized surfaces at this price point. As it stands, the look and feel of this notebook is borderline generic. It furthermore lacks a customizable LED lighting system, as is offered on some competing gaming notebooks from Asus and Alienware. The keyboard is another area where the P57W could use improvement. There’s just not enough feel, though it does have a good layout, and is comfortable for long typing sessions. Last on our list of complains is the display’s lack of Nvidia G-Sync support, which is starting to become a more popular feature on gaming notebooks.

The P35W V5 tries to deliver a mobile 4K gaming experience, but its lesser price and components mean it doesn't quite manage. It's decent in most other departments, but rivals offer more balanced specifications inside better-looking machines – sometimes for far more cash, but sometimes only for £50 (around $66/AUS$87) more.
