Last year’s Lenovo ThinkPad T490s won our "Editor’s Choice Award“. The successor, the Lenovo ThinkPad T14s with Comet Lake-based Intel CPUs is just as good. However, because there is a more attractive option with an AMD chip, the Intel-based ThinkPad T14s Gen 1 is not going to sell as well. Read our review to learn why.

配备AMD Renoir处理器的ThinkPad T14提供更高的性能,并且比英特尔版本便宜。 但是功耗和续航时间呢? 我们将仔细研究两个版本的区别。

Performance from this chip is phenomenal under sustained load, but in day-to-day use the target audience is unlikely to notice the difference compared to the latest Core i7-powered Dell XPS 13. And if you’re willing to switch allegiance from Windows, the M1 MacBook Pro (and even the cheaper Air) are faster still in optimised programs whilst being even sleeker. We also question this laptop’s value for money: a 256GB SSD at this price is positively stingy, and while the warranty lasts three years, it’s return-to-base rather than on-site. This leaves the ThinkPad T14s in the uncomfortable middle ground, unable to lift itself away from the new MacBooks and its corporate rivals.

Considering the price of the laptop, and the performance it offers, it is probably one of the best business laptops for high-workload scenarios. Not only does it offer supreme power, but it also has quite a lot of goodies in terms of security. You get a dedicated TPM chip onboard, the AMD Memory Guard technology, dual biometric authentication (thanks to the IR face recognition, and the fingerprint reader, both of which work extremely well).

The ThinkPad T14s flirts with a four-and-a-half-star rating and an Editors' Choice nod, missing those marks mainly due to Lenovo's wrongheaded decision to deny AMD customers a 4K screen option (and the fact that we like to see a Thunderbolt 3 port in an over-$1,000 notebook). But if you're content with a 1080p display, the T14s is a sensational business laptop—lighter, faster, and $493 cheaper as tested than the Dell Latitude 7410 (though that comparison is a bit flawed, since the Dell has a gorgeous 4K display), and a genuine, more affordable alternative to the super-stellar ThinkPad X1 Carbon. Its Ryzen 7 Pro CPU is a monster, delivering near-mobile-workstation levels of raw multithreaded performance, and its engineering is faultless.

The 2.8 lb / 1.27 kg ThinkPad T14s is the more affordable counterpart to the ThinkPad X1 Carbon. It has a 12.95mm matte black magnesium alloy shell, the usual excellent ThinkPad keyboard and is available with a variety of displays. You can get it with AMD Ryzen 5 Pro (6-core) and Ryzen 7 Pro (8-core) CPUs for a significant performance boost, or with Intel 10th gen Comet Lake 4-core CPUs for Thunderbolt 3 support. The laptop has ample ports, optional 4G LTE WWAN, a fingerprint scanner, Windows Hello IR camera and strong battery life.

If only it came with a UHD display. Seriously, I get that there are some advantages to choosing Intel, and others to choosing AMD. In terms of what the platform offers, I think there are more advantages from AMD, although you do get Thunderbolt from Intel. What I don't care for is OEMs creating their own value propositions for Intel by only offering certain configurations with an Intel processor. It's not cool.

This 2020 ThinkPad T14s is a refreshed iteration of last year's ThinkPad T490, and that's fine by me. The competent and efficient AMD Ryzen Pro hardware implementation is what primarily puts it on the map for potential buyers looking for solid performance in a compact chassis, and while this delivers and outmatches the Intel-based alternatives out there, it's not without its quirks, as explained in the detailed review down-below.

All that adds up to a laptop that may be competent across the board but fails to excel in any one particular area. Performance is excellent under sustained load but it’s not significantly better than the latest 11th gen Intel Core i7-powered Dell XPS 13 and battery life is weaker than its big rivals, too. For corporate types, however, it is better value than the business-grade HP Elite Dragonfly, and there’s a plethora of configurations to choose from too. If you’re in the market for any laptop for any purpose at around the £1,000 mark and above, then you’d be doing yourself a huge disservice not to put the M1 MacBook Pro and MacBook Air laptops at the top of your list. They’re much better all-rounders than the ThinkPad T14s and better value too.

The ThinkPad proposition naturally includes a high-quality chassis outfitted with an excellent keyboard and ample I/O, and the T14s is only a few small tweaks away from ticking every relevant box. The default webcam ought to be better, chunky bezels lend a somewhat dated appearance, we'd like to see Lenovo be more adventurous in the display department. This system with a 16:10 touchscreen would be hard to beat.

Price is often a deciding factor when buying pretty much anything in life. Laptops are no different, and right from the get-go, the ThinkPad T14s Gen 3 doesn’t start on good terms. Especially when you consider the fact, that perhaps most of this device’s users would be corporate employees, who have little to say. Unfortunately, the big thing that separates it from its non-“s” brother is the lack of memory upgradeability. Still, you can configure it with up to 32GB of RAM pre-purchase, and you get an M.2 PCIe x4 slot with Gen 4 support. When we see the feature list, we can understand the relatively high price. The machine sports a fingerprint reader, a 1080p Web camera with a privacy shutter, and an IR face recognition sensor. On top of that, the keyboard is spill-resistant, and there is optional WWAN connectivity. You can expect either a 4G, or 5G connection, but that depends on your WWAN card – Quectel EM05-G and Fibocom L860-GL-16 are CAT4 and CAT16 4G cards, while the Fibocom FM350-GL offers Sub-6 GHz 5G. Speaking of connections, the port selection of this machine is pretty good too – there are two Thunderbolt 4 ports, an HDMI connector, two USB Type-A 3.2 (Gen. 1) ports, and optional Smart Card readers. Unfortunately, there is no sign of an SD card reader, but you can’t get everything. So, if you don’t really care about the price tag, the ThinkPad T14s Gen 3 is a fantastic compact and feature-packed business notebook. We would definitely consider it for a workhorse enterprise unit.

The best business notebooks in our eyes are the HP Dragonfly G4 and Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 11, but the ThinkPad T14s Gen 4 is not far behind. We might recommend you to replace its base screen with the sharper OLED panel, but at its widely discounted price the T14s is a decent deal that'll give years of reliable service.
