Those that want some solid gaming performance in a laptop that weight under five pounds will have a hard time finding a value as good as the MSI GS60 Ghost. Even with its light weight, the system offers some solid performance for a smooth gaming experience and a fantastic display.

Like the Razer Blade, the Ghost plays to a specific niche: gamers who want the power of a full-fledged gaming PC without sacrificing portability or aesthetics. It's a small subset of the notebook market, but MSI's GS60 fits right in: It's thin, powerful and a joy to use. It's not perfect, though. Pitted against the Blade, the Ghost's average battery life is disappointing and its Kepler-based GPU fails to make NVIDIA's new Battery Boost feature shine.

MSI has proved that you can make a slim 15-inch gaming rig without making serious trade-offs. The $1,799 GS60 Ghost offers lightweight portability with strong graphics, fairly good battery life and a lovely wide-angle 1080p display. MSI also includes software that enhances your game play and a keyboard with fun, customizable backlighting.

It may be a gaming laptop, but MSI's GS60 Ghost has a lot going for it even if you're not all that keen on games. The keyboard and screen are both excellent, and the configuration is strong, despite the overall weight of 1.96kg and the thin chassis. For the most part, a worthy product to consider if you're a gamer looking for something relatively mobile.

For anyone who has become accustomed to the thin-and-light portability of an Ultrabook, gaming laptops are now very much back in contention. Mobile systems armed with quad-core CPUs and dedicated graphics have shed the excess bulk and, courtesy of increasingly-efficient processors and other modern-day technologies, are now being delivered in Ultrabook-esque packages that are slim, relatively light and suitably powerful.

There’s plenty of power inside this machine, and MSI has squeezed top-level components into a chassis that’s slimmer and lighter than any gaming notebook we’ve yet seen. The screen and keyboard also excel, and the speakers are good. It’s a contender if rivals are expensive, but only worth a purchase if you’re going to be using it at a power source and on a desk – as poor battery life and thermal performance are the MSI’s key problems.

It is true, the machine does run rather warm, and it emits a fair level of noise under heavy, sustained load. There is absolutely nothing MSI can do about this – apart from add in more fans and increase noise levels well past 40dBA. MSI have clearly spent some time in the R&D department, balancing the heat against noise emissions. Even though the machine does get very warm under load it never suffered from throttling during our tests. If you pick one up however, we do advise that you keep the rear vents clear from any obstructions. MSI are selling several versions of the MSI GS60 2PE Ghost Pro 15.6 inch Laptop. This particular model we reviewed today, is available from Overclockers UK for £1,399.99 inc vat, although it has just sold out as we went to press. MSI did tell us that this is one of their more popular models, and it isn’t difficult to see why.

The MSI GS60 2PE Ghost Pro has enough power to handle current games, and it’s got the screen quality to match – and all while costing less than the Gigabyte P35W v2, which has a poorer screen but a tad more gaming power. The storage, keyboard and speakers all impress, but this slimline gaming laptop struggles for longevity and has poor thermal performance. It’s thin and impressive, but be aware about the MSI’s limitations before spending any cash.

The MSI GS60 Ghost Pro is a little gem, combining power and finesse. And given the configuration, it doesn't heat up excessively, either. What we've got here is a dedicated gaming laptop that can run any game and do it well. It boasts an excellent screen and is small and light enough that you can take it with you anywhere. It's just a shame the audio isn't up to the same standard.

Overall, the MSI GS60 Ghost Pro 3K-095 is an outstanding, if slightly pricey, gaming rig. The laptop scorched through our graphics and gaming benchmarks, and delivered seamless performance on Battlefield 4 with the graphics cranked all the way up. Moreover, the 3K display looks stunning—even if there are few opportunities beyond gaming to use it—and the speakers deliver pitch-perfect audio.

Overall, I’m extremely pleased with the laptop, especially the 970M version. The GS60 Pro offers pretty much the best that can be offered by an Ultraportable to date. And they do it without skimping on the screen and keyboard quality. The trackpad could be a little better but it certainly isn’t keeping me from liking this machine. I’ve only spent a short time with the 970M version but I’m sure it will fill in the gaps I think was lacking in the previous version.

The MSI GS60 Ghost Pro 3K has nearly everything we want in an ultraportable gaming laptop. The slim aluminum chassis is light enough to tote around, while still feeling sturdy and looking aggressive enough for a LAN party. The performance is solid, and the high-resolution display looks great. It's not quite perfect—the battery life is a little short, and the heat issues leave us worried about toasted-leg syndrome—but it shapes up to be one of the best midrange gaming rigs we've seen yet. That's enough for it to replace the Digital Storm Krypton as our Editors' Choice for midrange gaming laptops.

Whether you settle for the FHD model or spring for 3K gaming, the MSI GS60 Ghost Pro 3K is one 15-inch gaming laptop to beat. Though, while an undoubtedly impressive feat, beyond-HD gaming is neither something I'd call a must-have feature nor will it be all that great on this series of cards come 2015 and beyond. Just don't expect the endurance of an Ultrabook from this rig. And gentlemen, for the sake of your future spawn, don't play with this thing on your lap without protection. (I mean a laptop cooler, you gutterhead!)

The bottom line is that you have to decide what's most important to you. If you want a HiDPI gaming notebook with good battery life, you'll unfortunately have to give up some gaming performance (i.e. get Dell's XPS 15 with GT 750M graphics) or battery life (all of the above laptops I just mentioned deliver less than five hours of battery life).

The MSI GS60 Ghost Pro 3K 2QE really is a gaming tour de force. Even at the native 2,880 x 1,620 resolution of the 3K panel, the GTX970m is able to generate smooth frame rates. The only caveat will be games such as Tomb Raider will need the image quality settings dialed down a little, to a notch just below maximum. On a 15.6 inch screen it is difficult to get the full value from a 3k panel. Without calling upon Windows 8.1 scaling options, desktop text is miniscule, and tricky to read. That said, a couple of scaling tweaks in the operating system can cure many legibility issues. I say many, because not all 3k/4k 15″ usability issues can be resolved via the OS.

While still not especially petite by the standards of some 15-inch laptops – its footprint is 14 percent larger than a MacBook Pro despite its smaller display – the MSI GS60 2QD-470UK does manage to keep within the magic size and weight figures of 2.0 kg and 20 mm, making it the most totable gaming laptop in its category. It has the graphics processor to take on modern games up to their highest detail settings, and is only let down by noisy fans and a relatively short battery life.

Not much has changed with the 2015 GS60 except an updated Broadwell CPU and a new screen option. MSI continues to use the same chassis and be one of the top contenders for a lightweight and high powered laptop. It’s unfortunate they chose such a poor 4K panel on this versions though. I'd give models with anything else but this 4K screen a score of 4/5, but the 4K model only gets a 3.5 from me.

Ghost in a shell. The portable 15.6-inch GS60 gets Skylake, DDR4, NVMe SSD, and USB 3.1 Super Port for its latest refresh. Essentially, pretty much everything but the GTX 970M has been updated. Has gaming performance improved in any way?

If performance is a top priority, as it should be on a gaming notebook, the GS60 Ghost Pro should be on your short list of 15.6-inch notebooks. Its latest-gen Core i7-6700HQ processor and Nvidia GeForce GTX 970M graphics handily power through today’s games at top settings. If, furthermore, having a sleek design, stylish accents, a beautiful IPS display, and strong build quality are important, it should rank even higher.

Despite its glaring battery life flaw, the MSI GS60 is one incredibly well put together device. It's still one of the thinnest and most powerful gaming laptops in the world. While there's a higher-end model with a 4K screen, I strongly suggest sticking with the 1080p configuration.

The MSI GS60 Ghost Pro is an appealing laptop, providing high-end gaming performance in a svelte build. It has a wide array of port options and a surprising amount of storage space, rounded out with extra pluses like customizable backlighting. The display is nice, though, while the speakers are subpar and the short battery life takes away much of the reason to have a smaller system. The 970M graphics won't get you near 60fps (and may not guarantee 30fps in cutting-edge or future titles for long), so it's hard to ultimately recommend laying out the asking price.

The MSI GS60’s performance per dollar is difficult to beat. A comparable Alienware costs $2,250, while the upcoming revision of the Asus G501, with similar hardware, will cost about $1,800. The MSI’s comparatively low $1,700 price point starts to look mighty attractive among its competitors.
