The ASUS Zenbook UX301 is certainly a stylish Ultrabook that packs some very good performance. So what’s the only downside? Its price – sitting in at a cool AED 6,499. For an Ultrabook it’s certainly one that’s going to set you back a few, even though it’s capable of delivering some great performance.

The 13.3-inch stunner is slim and the topped with a Gorilla Glass 3 lid that gives it a distinct finish along with reassuring toughness. And that's high praise even before even opening this powerful laptop up. Lift the lid and the Asus logo glows up on the rear. Very cool indeed. But the big reveal is its screen, all 2560 x 1440 pixels of it - it's incredibly high resolution and looks amazing.

The Asus Zenbook UX302 is a solid addition to the Zenbook range that makes several predictable moves. We could see the updating of screen tech, the move to Haswell chips and the adopting of several recognisable Asus visual traits a mile off. We’re not too fussed about the flashy glass top, but it was one way to ensure it didn’t look exactly like last year’s models.

Gaming-to-go - Part Two. Lots of power packed into an attractive case - that is one way to describe this Zenbook. An IPS panel and SSD complete the package. Even with its high-performance components, its battery life is good as well. Does the Zenbook have weaknesses too? Keep reading to find out.

Asus is pitching the UX305 as a Windows competitor to the admittedly more powerful MacBook Air. And it’s done a good job. The Asus machine is cheaper, slimmer, lighter, more stylish and has more in the way of ports. Even if you set those qualities at nought the impressive display and even more impressive battery life make it worth serious consideration. And now that Windows 10 has ousted 8/8.1 it no longer feels like it ought to have a touchscreen.

We like the screen and the typing experience mostly, and love the convenience of the multiple USB ports on such a portable body. There are periods when the performance might be a little sluggish (as it was for us when we loaded some Flash-heavy Web sites), but it’s not a laptop that’s design for loads of processing; just use it for simple stuff, be mindful of things that can slow it down, and you’ll be fine.

The Asus Zenbook UX305 is certainly in the running for king of the mid-range laptops. Of course there are more powerful and feature-heavy laptops out there, but at this £649 price point, with its Full HD 13.3-inch screen, metal build, full size keyboard, silent operation and super-slim build, it's hard to fault. It's the pernickety things that hold it back from perfection: we'd like a backlit keyboard and a touchscreen wouldn't go amiss. But then we'd also like to maintain the price point too, so in the balance of things we think Asus has made a good judgement call with the UK specification of the UX305.

Despite the lack of a touchscreen and mediocre trackpad, I really like the Zenbook UX305. I'm able to do almost everything I need to on a daily basis with it, either as a travel computer or a workstation plugged into an external display and accessories. This is the kind of computer that Core-M was meant for: the ability to sustain moderate workloads over a long period of time, at a ridiculously good price tag. 1080p is an appropriate resolution for the hardware, so I'd even stay away from the $1000 model with a 3200x1800 resolution touchscreen.

The premium feeling yet reasonably-priced Zenbook UX305 is a great success. It doesn't tick every box - the screen isn't perfect and there are a couple of rough edges, but if you're looking for a nippy laptop for under £700, it’s a great choice. It's cheaper than the current MacBook Air, has more RAM and a thinner design, and it also has a higher resolution screen. With that said, it still comes with Windows 8.1, which might be enough to put a few buyers off. Still, in terms of sheer value-for-money, the Zenbook UX305 is superb. It’s actually really hard to think of something that we didn’t like about the device. The ASUS ZenBook UX305 is everything what a traveler or businessman would want. It’s lightweight, sturdy, durable, premium materials are used for the making of the ultrabook, it has a great keyboard and delightful touchpad, and the screen is just ideal. The panel used in this device is high-quality material – high contrast, high resolution, 97% sRGB color gamut coverage and high maximum brightness. Also, the display isn’t harmful to your eyes if you use it over 25% brightness.

While the $700 Asus ZenBook UX305 is very capable and a good bargain, it can't measure up to the Dell XPS 13's performance and smaller size. True, the ZenBook has a better assortment of ports, twice as much RAM and storage space, and a three-year warranty, but it has nothing that can compare to the Dell's more than 11-hour battery life.

You simply won't find a more well-rounded Ultrabook for the money. With its Intel Core M CPU, 8GB of RAM and 256GB SSD, the $699 ZenBook UX305 is an absolute bargain. The only downsides are the quiet speakers and the lack of a keyboard backlight. Have more to spend? I wouldn't fault anyone for choosing the $899 Dell XPS 13, with its even longer battery life and impressive Infinity display.

What this comes down to is a major breakthrough in price for an ultrabook. I thought Dell's XPS 13 2015, with its $799 price was a big breakthrough (and it is), but you give up in RAM and storage to get to $800. The same goes with Apple's MacBook Air 11, which has a tiny, low-res screen and, like the Dell, a limited 128GB of storage and 4GB of RAM.

If you're looking for a sleek and well built 13 inch ultraportable for light everyday activities, the Asus Zenbook UX305 is worth a look. It's not very expensive, it packs an excellent display and run's completely quiet, since there's no fan or spinning HDD inside. But there are a few aspects that might steer you away and keep in mind that this thing should not be considered if you need a speedy ultrabook.

Decent piece of kit but not a massive step up from the current model, at least as far as look and feel are concerned. Being the first out of the stalls with the Core M means that Asus could gather some momentum before rivals appear on the market.

What will make of break the Asus Zenbook UX305 is its price… which is something that we don't know just yet. Despite querying it with Asus representatives that's still a guessing game for the time being. But if the Taiwanese company gets it right then it's onto a certain winner we should think - that screen resolution, based on the numbers game along, will be enough to lure prospective punters in.

It's not coming out until next year, and has no price as yet, so the question is should you be excited by this? Yes, but expect rivals. We're bound to see more Intel Core M laptops in the coming months, and we wager Apple can't be far away from a similar upgrade to the Macbook Air.

This is a fine Ultrabook overall, and that’s mostly to do with its solid build quality, comfortable keyboard, rich screen, and good all-round performance. It has three USB 3.0 ports and a full-sized HDMI port, which are nice touches, and you even get mini DisplayPort and a full-sized SD card reader (though SD cards won’t sit all the way inside the slot).

Asus continues to impress us with their extremely attractive, well put together and continually evolving Ultrabooks. The Zenbook UX303 is certainly their best effort yet, with a chic metal casing, very good backlit keyboard, pleasing IPS full HD display and upgradable components. The UX303LN is an engineering feat: it fits midrange integrated graphics into a slim and light chassis, with a big enough fan to keep throttling under control.

As expected, Intel’s new Broadwell Core i7 doesn’t rewrite the rulebook, certainly not in performance terms. However, its improved efficiency, coupled with Asus’ budget-conscious specification, means this first outing is far more positive than negative, and at £700 inc VAT, the Zenbook UX303LA represents superb value.

ZenBook UX303LN is a computer which has cleverly balanced thin design and high-class components, as far as possible, without causing a negative effect of the internal and external temperatures. The Core i7 CPU and the GeForce 840M GPU are capable of almost any task, excluding/except for the newest, highly intensive 3D games. The IPS panel has ultra-high resolution, which is a great plus if you don’t happen to stumble upon unoptimized software, whose graphic elements are absolute-sized, and without scaling its physical dimensions on the screen are small enough to make you stare from 10-15 cm, trying to understand what is written on the menus or on the buttons. On the other hand, the display’s sRGB coverage, brightness and viewing angles are very good for a laptop. A problem is the presence of PWM, although the same have a high frequency.

A functional but unspectacular ultrabook, the ZenBook UX305's strengths lie in superior portability and competitive price rather than performance or enterprise features. As such, it's a decent choice for home and office users who want an affordable desktop replacement or notebook upgrade. As is often the way, however, the pursuit of a lower price has resulted in a number of compromises, most notably to the CPU and SSD.

The time you read this review, an aspect of it will already be out of date, because we reviewed it with Windows 8 on-board, an operating system that worked fine without touch, but which was skewed better for machines with it. Unfortunately, the UX305 doesn’t have touch, at least not the version we’ve been able to check out, and while that would be a bit of a concern for Windows 8, Windows 10 should have no problems with it whatsoever.

It is only when we consider a recently reviewed competitor – PCSpecialist’s Lafité Ultrabook – that the UX305 seems less appealing. Lafité packs in more power thanks to a Broadwell-U i3, has more storage capacity, and is only just heavier at 1.4kg and only just thicker at 18mm. Perhaps most importantly, it is £150 cheaper.

If the Asus Zenbook UX305 isn't for you, take a look at our Best Laptops 2015 guide to find a better fit for your needs.

Intel may have switched its marketing dollars to laptop/tablet hybrids, but there's still a lot of value to be found among lightweight ultrabooks. Until now, we probably would have steered shoppers to the base (1080p non-touch) model of Dell's XPS 13, which is $799 with a Core i3 processor, 4GB of RAM, and a 128GB SSD. But for Asus to offer double the memory and storage for $100 less is remarkable.

Well done, Asus. Until recently, Asus has been using Core M processors in their Zenbook UX305 models. However, the manufacturer now has greater aspirations. By adding new Core i7 processors to the series, Asus hopes to compete with the MacBook Air 13. Even with its stronger CPU, the Zenbook's battery life has improved. It just goes to show that in the wrestling ring of the computer world, sometimes it is not a disadvantage for a battery to put on some weight.

The Asus Zenbook UX305LA is a thin and light notebook with Broadwell U hardware, a matte IPS display, long battery life and a competitive price. All these make it one of the better devices in its class, but the lack of a backlit keyboard, the limited IO and even the lack of a touchscreen option could steer some of you away.

The Asus Zenbook Pro UX501J-DS71T is prime example of how premium hardware can impact the price of a system. Even a few months ago, similarly equipped laptops cost hundreds of dollars more, due in no small part to the cost of relatively rare 4K resolution displays and high-end graphics hardware. As time marches forward, technology gets more affordable, and the hardware behind high-resolution displays and high-performance CPUs ring up at a much lower price. The result is a system that not only outclasses competitors on most fronts, but is far more affordable.

I will be honest, when I first laid my hands on this device I thought it would be around RM3600 because of how great it looks in terms of finishing and build quality. So for around RM2999 this is quite a bargain, but for a home/work environment of course. I wouldn’t recommend pro-gaming on this laptop anytime soon.

The premium-feeling yet affordably-priced Zenbook UX305 is a great success in my book. While it doesn't tick every box, and you can't expect it given the price with the imperfect screen and couple of rough edges. However, if you're looking for a nippy little laptop for under £550, it’s a fantastic choice. Just a fraction of the price than the 2015 MacBook Air, the UX305 has considerably more RAM and a thinner design, and it also has a higher resolution screen too. All being said, it also comes with Windows 10, which might be enough to put off a few fans of Apple's snappy operating system. When you bring it down in terms of sheer value-for-money, the Zenbook UX305 is still a superb choice. If you feel like that Asus Zenbook UX305 isn't quite for you and want to look at your other options, take a quick look at our Best Laptop 2016 guide to see if you can find a better fit for your needs and price range.

In keeping with the late models in the ZenBook line, the ZenBook UX305CA is an ultra-thin, well-built, and classy laptop with a decent screen, passable sound, and a workable keyboard and touch pad, all at a very attractive price. In addition, it’s light and thin enough that not only is it comfortable to use, but carrying this laptop (in a backpack, or under your arm) is little burden.

Asus’ Zenbook UX305 reaffirms the brand’s position as the premier building of budget ultrabooks. A mere $700 will snag you a lightweight system with a solid 1080p display, class-leading keyboard and twice the hard drive capacity found in most competitors. When all the pros and cons are tallied, this Asus stands out as one of the best values around.

The Asus ZenBook UX305CA is a sensible, perhaps predictable upgrade to the UX305 we looked at last year. It has newer CPU, and a much higher-resolution screen. However, it remains a seriously portable, expensive-feeling laptop that really isn’t that expensive. That you can get this grade of machine for £600 (at the time of writing) shows that while Apple’s pricing has improved, companies like Asus still have the edge. A big, sharp, shiny edge. The Core M CPU limits the crowd of people this laptop will suit perfectly. But that it still feels fast for everyday tasks and the fact it will last all day with that kind of use makes it ideal for those who find themselves hopping between meetings or cafes as part of their daily grind. If you’re looking for something to use mostly at home, you might want look for something with a little more power and a screen with slightly higher contrast, though.

There’s undoubtedly a lot to like about the ZenBook UX305CA. Its build quality and design are still excellent and the high-resolution screen is equally great. However, its performance took a puzzling step backwards and its battery life was a little disappointing. Still, considering it remains around the same price as its predecessor it’s still worthy of recommendation for those looking for a thin, light and extremely portable laptop, especially for those not looking to stretch to the Apple MacBook.

The Asus ZenBook UX305CA is a laptop for shoppers who care more about portability and endurance than sheer power. Other pluses include the bright and colorful full HD matte display, comfy keyboard and fairly low $699 price. If you love Asus' design and portability but need something that can handle a heavier workload, Asus' Core i5-powered UX303UA is a better choice for $850.

Asus had the perfect opportunity with the UX305CA to perfect what was already a superb laptop, but it has fallen some way short. This is still a good option for those seeking a slim and light laptop for two thirds' the price of a premium Ultrabook. However, the 4K screen is actually a step back from the 1080p version of last year's model, and battery life has taken a hit too. Add in the still poor touchpad and you've got a machine that's racked with compromises.

While this Skylake refresh is still short on both high-end power and internal storage, there's plenty here to justify the upgrade; in particular, the premium display and well-above-average battery life. These sizeable improvements elevate what was already a solid, supremely portable mid-range laptop, and with no corresponding rise in the price of entry, the ZenBook UX305CA is undoubtedly the definitive edition - even with the risk of some technical hiccups.

The Asus ZenBook UX305CA is an evolutionary update to an already nice product, but this is one of cases in which that’s a (mostly) good thing. The ZenBook’s design and build quality are as good in this year’s model as they were in the previous edition, so we’re not surprised that many of the new or updated components are incremental upgrades geared mostly at keeping the ultrabook current.

If 2015 was a break-out year for many laptop makers, 2016 so far appears to be steady as she goes. Some vendors have chosen to make tiny changes to bring laptops more in line with newer technologies such as USB-C, while others aren't making any changes beyond swapping the CPU. In the UX305's case, that's really not a bad thing. For what you get in performance, build quality, and portability, the UX305 is still easily the best budget ultrabook of the year.

The Asus ZenBook UX305CA is a slim, well-made system with a good display and solid performance. The aluminum body feels sturdy and of high quality, and the price is a very good value. The Apple MacBook Air 13-inch costs $300 more, and the screen is a lower resolution, but it remains our Editors' Choice for midrange ultraportables, as the higher cost nets you clear-cut advantages, like better performance and unmatched battery life, but the Asus ZenBook UX305CA is a worthy contender, especially if you're looking to save some money.

You might argue that you’re paying for a slimmer device with a better design, and you would be right. Your ultimate decision depends on your needs and on whether you’re willing to spend on design and aesthetics. However, if you really want a slimmer, lighter device, the MacBook Air is cheaper and fits the bill perfectly. A more powerful device can be had for 70 percent of the price.

Asus gives us two options here: the UX305 series is portable at the cost of all else, but it does a fantastic job of what it's meant to. On the other hand, the UX303 tries to give buyers both portability and power, but balanced out at the most reasonable cost possible. That kind of compromise might work for a lot of people, and it doesn't hurt at all that the UX303UB looks and feels fantastic. If you're the adventurous type, you could also swap out the UX303UB's hard drive for an SSD and bump up the RAM - even if you only think you might want an upgrade a few years down the line, at least it's possible.

Asus’ Zenbook UX305UA is an initially confusing ultrabook. It looks similar to the UX305CA at a glance, and it appears to share some components, such as the keyboard, touchpad, and hard drive. Even the price has barely changed, rising to $750 – a mere $50 more than the UX305CA. It might seem that Asus has decided to compete with itself. Yet on close examination, it’s clear the UX305UA is a different animal.

The Asus Zenbook UX305UA packs a lot of bang for the buck. It offers about twice the performance of a model with a Core M Broadwell processor, but sells for just $50 more. Interestingly, while this model has a significantly more powerful CPU and better graphics performance, there’s no much difference in battery life. In my tests, both versions lasted for around 6 or 7 hours of typical use.

Quite typical for ASUS’ ZenBook series, the UX303UB offers unique user experience and features that can rarely be seen in ultrabooks of this size. However, the device still leaves some room for improvement spec-wise. Firstly, the absence of an M.2 SSD slot, which would have made much more sense than the only available 2.5-inch drive. We would like to remind you that the old UX303LN laptop had the mSATA and 2.5-inch drive slot on board so it was only logical to upgrade the mSATA slot to an M.2 one. Secondly, the system can’t harness the CPU’s and GPU’s full potential.
