Screen Flickering / PWM (Pulse-Width Modulation)

To dim the screen, some notebooks will simply cycle the backlight on and off in rapid succession - a method called Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) . This cycling frequency should ideally be undetectable to the human eye. If said frequency is too low, users with sensitive eyes may experience strain or headaches or even notice the flickering altogether.

The frequency of 14880 Hz is quite high, so most users sensitive to PWM should not notice any flickering.

Flickering occurs even at high brightness setting and may have an effect on the user during everyday use.

In comparison: 53 % of all tested devices do not use PWM to dim the display. If PWM was detected, an average of 8746 (minimum: 5 - maximum: 343500) Hz was measured.

2023型号的MacBook Pro 14在日常使用中也是一个非常安静的设备,两个风扇经常完全停用。Apple ,继续使用一个非常防御性的风扇曲线,允许芯片在风扇启动之前达到100℃。作为一项规则,这对于承受长时间的负载高峰而不使用风扇是绰绰有余的。然而,在负载下,风扇速度总是有一些波动。我们希望这里有一个稳定的噪音。

前两个风扇速度(高达2800转/分)在正常坐姿下几乎听不到,最大为26分贝(A)。我们在CPU纯负荷(多核)以及游戏(RE村)中都测得33-36分贝(A),在压力测试中最大为43.2分贝(A),据此该数值很快就平息在39-40分贝(A)。最大的风扇转速为6800转/分,比前代产品要高,在这个水平上,风扇的轰鸣声高达52分贝(A),我们只能手动触发。没有发现其他电子噪音。

压力测试

压力测试的结果让我们有点吃惊,因为当CPU和GPU同时被置于负载之下时,CPU的性能会被大大扼杀。为了进行压力测试,我们使用了本地应用程序3DMark Wild Life Extreme Stress Test和Cinebench R23。在压力测试开始时,M2 Pro的总消耗量跃升至47瓦,两个组件都有~23瓦可供支配,但仅1-2秒后,总消耗量就被限制在34瓦。在这里,GPU明显受到青睐,以整整25瓦的功率工作,而处理器仅以约8瓦的功率工作。
